Gartner’s widely repeated forecast of nearly $1.5 trillion in worldwide AI spending referred to 2025, not 2026. In its latest cited estimate, published September 16, 2026, Gartner forecasts $2.670460 trillion in spending for 2026—about $2.7 trillion, up 49.5% year over year. These are forecasts, not audited totals of money already spent.

What Gartner’s $1.5 trillion headline meant

On September 17, 2025, Gartner said worldwide AI spending would total nearly $1.5 trillion in 2025. The headline was a forecast for that year, not a current-year forecast that should be carried forward unchanged. Gartner said at the time that spending could top $2 trillion in 2026. What Gartner now forecasts for 2026

Gartner’s September 16, 2026 release puts worldwide AI spending at $2.670460 trillion in 2026, rounded to $2.7 trillion in its headline. The table gives a 49.5% year-over-year growth rate. Both figures are Gartner forecasts for 2026, not confirmed actual spending. Gartner’s September 2026 release

Why Gartner’s 2026 number changed

A forecast is a dated estimate, and Gartner revised its 2026 projection during the year. The figures below are separate forecast vintages—not actual spending results or values to combine. Each is a nominal worldwide total for 2026 as reported in the named release.

Gartner release date Forecast year Worldwide AI spending forecast
January 15, 2026 2026 $2.527845 trillion
May 19, 2026 2026 $2.595667 trillion
September 16, 2026 2026 $2.670460 trillion

The January figure appears in Gartner’s January 2026 release; the May figure appears in its May 2026 release. The September estimate is the latest of these cited forecast vintages. Changes between releases reflect changes in Gartner’s estimates; they do not, by themselves, establish how much spending actually occurred.

What Gartner counts in its AI spending forecast

The September 2026 table covers a broad set of markets rather than a single measure of purchases of generative AI tools. Gartner lists AI infrastructure, services, software, cybersecurity, agents and assistants, generative AI models, platforms, application development, and AI data. It does not publish the full methodology or detailed category definitions in the release, so the headline total should be read within the scope Gartner describes rather than treated as a universally standardized accounting category.

Infrastructure is the largest listed category

Gartner forecasts $1.484397 trillion for AI infrastructure in 2026 in the September 2026 table. The release describes demand for infrastructure—including AI-optimized cloud services, servers, network fabric, processing semiconductors and devices—as strong and inelastic to memory-related price pressures. That is Gartner analyst John-David Lovelock’s characterization, not an independently established industry consensus. Gartner’s September 2026 release

Software and development categories are also included

Gartner’s release points to AI features embedded in existing enterprise software as part of the market context. It forecasts $9.541 billion for AI application development platforms in 2026, and says the category’s projected growth rate increased from 28% in its prior forecast to 39% in September. This is one category within the broader total, not a proxy for all AI software spending.

How to read the headline responsibly

  • Attach the forecast year to the number: nearly $1.5 trillion was Gartner’s September 2025 forecast for 2025.
  • For 2026, use the September 16, 2026 estimate of $2.670460 trillion, or Gartner’s rounded headline figure of $2.7 trillion, and identify it as a forecast.
  • When comparing Gartner estimates, state the release date and forecast year. The January, May and September 2026 numbers are different vintages.
  • Do not infer a precise category breakdown or full methodology from the public release; it points to Gartner’s paid forecast research and publishes only a high-level table.
