The Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations & Cloud Strategies Conference (IOCS) for North America is scheduled for December 8–10, 2026, in Las Vegas. As of October 4, 2026, it has not happened, so there are no completed 2026 session highlights to report. Its published agenda does, however, point to practical priorities for I&O leaders: tie technology work to business outcomes, prepare people and operating models for AI and automation, and strengthen governance and resilience as capabilities change.
What the 2026 conference agenda says about effective I&O leadership
Gartner’s conference overview frames I&O leadership as a business-enabling role: align infrastructure and operations with business strategy and remove barriers to digital initiatives. The agenda gives that principle a practical test: leaders need to explain how I&O work contributes to business value, not only report technical activity. Gartner’s 2026 agenda lists I&O metrics and business value among its topics.
For an initiative under consideration, ask what business outcome it supports, who owns that outcome, and what measures can show I&O’s contribution. This helps distinguish work that enables a strategic priority from work that is merely visible or technically interesting.
How leaders can turn the themes into decisions
The following decision framework is an editorial synthesis of topics in Gartner’s published program, not a checklist attributed to Gartner. Apply it to proposed investments and operating changes before committing budget or capacity.

Connect business value to measurable outcomes
- Name the business outcome the initiative is meant to support.
- Choose measures that show I&O’s contribution, alongside the technical indicators needed to manage service health.
- Agree how often the outcome and measures will be reviewed, and who can act if results fall short.
Plan for people and skills, not just tools
Gartner highlights skills for AI, automation and platform engineering, and the program gives workforce development its own focus. For each planned capability, identify the roles that will use, operate and govern it; the skills those roles need; and how training or workforce planning will close gaps. Buying a capability without assigning the work and developing the necessary skills leaves adoption unresolved.
Adapt the operating model and governance
New capabilities can change who makes decisions, how work moves between teams and where controls apply. Clarify decision rights, ownership and review processes before scaling a new approach. Governance should enable teams to deliver digital initiatives while preserving appropriate oversight, rather than becoming a separate process disconnected from delivery.

Evaluate resilience and risk together
The agenda includes security, compliance, reliability, resilience and recovery. Consider these together when assessing a change: what could fail, how the service will be restored, which obligations apply, and who is accountable for decisions during an incident. A faster or more automated operation is not effective if its risks and recovery needs remain unclear.
Check cost and execution capacity
Cost and value are explicit program themes. Compare an initiative’s expected contribution with the money, people and time available to deliver it. This matters especially where a midsize organization cannot staff every priority at once: sequencing work around capacity is more credible than treating every strategic theme as an immediate commitment.

What the agentic AI keynote signals—and what it does not
The scheduled program includes a keynote on scaling agentic AI into autonomous IT operations. Its description points to organizational questions as well as technical ones: changes people, teams and operating models must absorb, alongside governance and technology decisions. That makes it a useful signal of issues leaders may want to explore.
Because the conference is still upcoming, the session description is not evidence that autonomous operations have been achieved, nor a report of what the keynote concluded. Treat it as a planned discussion and assess any eventual recommendations against your own controls, service requirements and workforce readiness.

How to customize a conference agenda
Gartner’s Conference Navigator can filter sessions and help attendees build a personal agenda. The agenda page currently displays 234 sessions; that count and session details may change before the event. Its tracks include leadership, intelligent operations, talent and skills, security, and costs and value, with infrastructure and cloud also among the program’s subject areas.

- Open the official 2026 agenda and use Conference Navigator to filter the sessions.
- Start with the decision you need to make at work, then compare relevant topics such as I&O maturity, business value, AI, skills, resilience and recovery.
- Balance strategic sessions with those relevant to your operating responsibilities, such as cloud, infrastructure, security, reliability or cost management.
- Build a personal agenda around the sessions that address those needs, then check the program again closer to the event because listings can change.
Gartner’s overview advertises 3,000+ infrastructure and operations leaders, 60+ Gartner analysts and 150+ solution providers. These are figures shown on the event page, not verified final attendance or participation outcomes for an event that has not yet taken place. The overview also carries an attendee testimonial from Mike Layton of Baylor College of Medicine: “As an I&O leader, I’ve leveraged this conference and its timely and relevant content annually as a point of validation in strategic and operational planning for my organization. This conference is a must-attend!” It is one attendee’s endorsement, not a guarantee of the same value for every participant. See Gartner’s conference overview.

How to read past Gartner conference takeaways
Gartner’s page for historical session material mixes labels: it displays 2025 event dates, labels a section “All 2024 Conference Sessions,” and includes takeaways from sessions described as Leadership Vision for 2025. Those labels do not establish a single, consistent conference year for every item on the page. When using a past takeaway, identify the specific session and year Gartner assigns to it rather than presenting it as a 2026 highlight or as a summary of one clearly defined event. Check Gartner’s agenda and session listings.
