Garmin announced the Approach S72 on October 6, 2026, calling it a new flagship golf smartwatch. Its golf-focused metrics and premium materials make it an appealing launch—but I was hoping Garmin would announce a new MARQ instead. The announcement does not include one, and Garmin’s newsroom listings reviewed alongside it provide no MARQ launch date or timeline.
What Garmin announced for the Approach S72
The S72 comes in 43 mm and 47 mm sizes, with an AMOLED display, titanium bezel, sapphire lens, and ComfortFit fabric band. Garmin says the watch adds real-time heart-rate information and on-wrist swing metrics, including hand speed, backswing length, and wrist rotation. The announcement also describes driving-range tracking and putting analytics, plus aerial imagery and green reading on select courses.
Green reading, putting analytics, and aerial imagery require an active Garmin Golf membership; green reading is available only on select courses. Those conditions matter when assessing the S72’s golf features: the announcement does not present all of them as unconditional, built-in course tools. These are Garmin-announced capabilities, not independently tested results. Garmin’s October 6, 2026 announcement has the full feature description.

Garmin says the S72 has a speaker and microphone for calls and basic tasks, a built-in flashlight with white and red light, and wellness tools including wrist-based heart rate, stress tracking, Body Battery energy monitoring, and advanced sleep monitoring. Garmin cautions that the watch is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or monitor medical conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- Premium golf smartwatch features a lightweight titanium bezel, durable sapphire lens, ComfortFit fabric band, built-in flashlight, speaker and microphone

- Up to 16 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours of battery life in golf activity mode, so you can play round after round
- Look back on your round to see how heart rate affected your performance and start to see trends in how your biometric data and score relate (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Gain a better understanding of your swing during your range session and after your round with swing metrics, which include hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation and more
Price and battery claims
Garmin announced a suggested retail price starting at $799.99. For the larger model, Garmin claims up to 20 hours of battery life on the course and up to 16 days with GPS turned off. These are manufacturer figures from the October 6, 2026 announcement, not independent measurements; the battery claims also apply to different usage conditions.
Why I was hoping for a new MARQ
The S72 sounds like a serious golf watch, but my interest is in what Garmin might do next with MARQ. That is a personal preference, not a claim about what golfers or Garmin customers generally want. A golf-specialist watch and a MARQ model would answer different buying priorities, and the S72 announcement alone is not enough to make a meaningful specifications comparison with a particular MARQ generation.
Rank #2
- Stunning 1.4” AMOLED display brings more than 43,000 preloaded full-color CourseView maps to life on your wrist
- Look good on and off the course with a lightweight, stylish design and ceramic bezel
- Battery life: up to 16 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours in GPS mode
- Enhanced golf course maps allow you to see intricate details with the ability to pan and zoom for narrowing in on your target distance
- Improved virtual caddie feature shows your shot dispersion data and suggests a club based on a variety of factors, including your historical swing data, elevation, wind speed, wind direction and more
Garmin’s Sports and Fitness press release archive and Outdoor press release archive, as surfaced alongside the S72 announcement, include other 2026 releases such as fēnix 9 and fēnix 9 Pro, but no new MARQ announcement. That is a statement about the reviewed announcements and listings—not evidence that Garmin has cancelled MARQ, is preparing a successor, or will launch one on a particular date.

What this announcement means if you are choosing a watch
If your priority is golf-specific tools, the S72 is the product Garmin actually announced, with an explicit membership condition on several headline features. If you are waiting for MARQ, there is no new model or timing information in these materials to base a purchase decision on. For a direct comparison, first identify the exact MARQ generation available in your region; the announcement does not establish its specifications, price, or availability.
