The Garmin vívosmart 5 is best suited to people who want a small, unobtrusive band for everyday activity, sleep, and health tracking—not a screen-rich smartwatch or a running watch with built-in GPS. Garmin lists continuous heart rate, sleep score and insights, stress, Body Battery, respiration, Pulse Ox, and activity tracking among its features. Its most important compromise is that outdoor route tracking uses connected GPS from a compatible phone rather than GPS built into the band.
Garmin specifies up to seven days of battery life and a 5 ATM water rating. Those are manufacturer specifications, not guarantees for every use pattern. Independent reviewers at TechRadar and Tom’s Guide have praised its comfort and basic tracking capabilities; those assessments are their judgments, not firsthand testing for this review.
What the vívosmart 5 is—and who it suits
Announced by Garmin in 2022, the vívosmart 5 is a narrow fitness band built around daily wellness and activity tracking. It pairs with a compatible Apple or Android phone for connected features such as notifications and GPS. Garmin’s launch announcement lists steps, calories, intensity minutes, multiple activity profiles, continuous heart-rate monitoring, stress tracking, Body Battery, respiration, Pulse Ox, and sleep tracking with a score and insights.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. It is a weaker match if you want to leave your phone behind on outdoor workouts, see maps or detailed workout data on your wrist, or use a device as a medical monitor.

GPS: the key limitation for outdoor workouts
The vívosmart 5 does not have onboard GPS. Garmin says it can connect to compatible GPS for outdoor walk, run, and ride distance, pace, and speed; in ordinary use this means carrying the paired phone. TechRadar also identifies the lack of onboard GPS and phone dependence for outdoor route tracking as a drawback.
- It can work for phone-carrying workouts: connected GPS can supply outdoor location data while the phone is with you and connected.
- It is not for phone-free route recording: if you want a watch or band to record a route independently, this is the wrong design trade-off.
- It is not an advanced training watch: Garmin’s listed features center on daily activity and wellness rather than a large, training-focused screen or standalone GPS.
Display, controls, and day-to-day use
The display is monochrome, a practical but less vivid approach than a color smartwatch screen. Garmin says it is 66% larger than the vívosmart 4 display and combines touchscreen controls with a physical button. The small form is part of the appeal for people who find a watch bulky, but it also means less room for reading notifications or inspecting workout information.
Garmin’s launch release also lists smart notifications and calendar reminders, with connected functions dependent on a compatible smartphone. The same release describes interchangeable bands. Check that any replacement band is specifically compatible with the vívosmart 5 before buying; the fact that Garmin supports interchangeable bands does not establish compatibility for every third-party accessory.

Health, sleep, and activity tracking
Garmin lists continuous heart rate, sleep score and insights, stress, Body Battery, respiration, Pulse Ox, steps, calories, intensity minutes, and activity profiles. The sleep score is Garmin’s estimate based on indicators such as sleep-stage time, movement, and stress—not a clinical sleep assessment. Pulse Ox availability varies by country.
These features can help you follow patterns in your activity and rest, but Garmin explicitly says the device is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition. Treat its metrics as consumer wellness information, not as a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or measurement.
Independent editorial assessments are broadly positive about basic use. TechRadar praises the band’s comfort, automatic activity tracking, and sleep tracking. Tom’s Guide says it performed well in that publication’s testing as a sleep and fitness tracker. These are reviewer judgments, not a quantified accuracy result, and they do not establish medical validity.

Battery life and water resistance
Garmin’s online owner manual specifies up to seven days of battery life. Garmin describes this as a typical laboratory value and says real-world life depends on factors including enabled features, notifications, GPS status, and sensors. Frequent use of connected features or sensors can therefore change how often you need to charge it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe manual gives the tracker a 5 ATM water rating, which Garmin explains as pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 metres. That rating is not an independently tested promise that every water activity or use at that depth is suitable; follow Garmin’s water-use guidance rather than treating the number as a blanket guarantee.
Subscription, price, and ownership considerations
TechRadar says the core features do not require a subscription. Keep that claim scoped to the core tracker features; it does not establish that every optional service or third-party offering is free. Garmin documents interchangeable bands, which may help with fit or replacement, but confirm the compatibility of a specific band before ordering.
