The clearest difference between Garmin’s vívoactive 5 and vívoactive 4 is the screen: the 5 has an AMOLED display with an optional always-on mode, while the 4 uses a sunlight-visible transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) display. Garmin lists several key features on both, including music storage, sleep score and insights, Pulse Ox, Garmin Pay, and a 5 ATM water rating. Choose based on whether you prefer the 5’s display and documented battery modes or the 4’s MIP screen—and compare the prices available to you, since current pricing and stock are not established here.
How the displays differ
Garmin lists an AMOLED display and touchscreen for the vívoactive 5, with an option to keep the display always on. The vívoactive 4 has a transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) screen, a different display technology. These specifications establish the type of screen on each watch, but do not by themselves prove that one is easier to read in every setting.
If an AMOLED screen and the option to leave it on matter to you, the 5 is the more direct fit. If you prefer the 4’s MIP display, that distinction may matter more than the shared features.

Garmin’s comparison lists these features for both the vívoactive 5 and vívoactive 4:
#1 Best Overall
- Designed with a bright, colorful AMOLED display, get a more complete picture of your health, thanks to battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode (5 days display always-on)
- Body Battery energy monitoring helps you understand when you’re charged up or need to rest, with even more personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Get a sleep score and personalized sleep coaching for how much sleep you need — and get tips on how to improve plus key metrics such as HRV status to better understand your health (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Find new ways to keep your body moving with more than 30 built-in indoor and GPS sports apps, including walking, running, cycling, HIIT, swimming, golf and more
- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Music storage
- Sleep score and insights
- Pulse Ox
- Garmin Pay
- 5 ATM water rating
These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not independent test results. Pulse Ox and other wellness features should not be treated as medical diagnoses. Garmin describes the 5 ATM rating as pressure equivalent to 50 m; that rating is not a recommendation to use the watch at that depth. See Garmin’s vívoactive 5 specifications.
The vívoactive 5 manual also says audio can be downloaded to the watch and played through Bluetooth headphones. Garmin’s comparison lists music storage on the 4 as well, but the available evidence does not establish the same playback details for that model.

vívoactive 5 battery life depends on the mode
Garmin’s 2025 vívoactive 5 manual gives these maximum estimates by operating mode. They are manufacturer estimates, not a guaranteed runtime or results from a controlled comparison with the vívoactive 4.

Garmin says actual vívoactive 5 battery life depends on enabled features, including activity tracking, wrist-based heart rate, phone notifications, GPS, and connected sensors. The always-on display estimate is substantially lower than the standard smartwatch-mode estimate, so consider that trade-off if you expect to keep the screen on continuously. Garmin’s comparison does not provide a vívoactive 4 battery figure that can be verified here, so these numbers do not establish which watch lasts longer in a like-for-like comparison. See the vívoactive 5 Owner’s Manual.

Which watch should you choose?
Choose the vívoactive 5 if
- You want an AMOLED screen with an optional always-on mode and touchscreen support.
- You want the documented vívoactive 5 battery estimates for different modes, and can match the mode to how you plan to use the watch.
- You want Garmin’s documented instructions for downloading audio and listening through Bluetooth headphones.
Consider the vívoactive 4 if
- You prefer its transflective MIP display.
- The price you can actually get it for makes more sense to you than the vívoactive 5.
Garmin’s listed comparison features show substantial overlap, so the evidence here does not support recommending an upgrade for everyone. Decide whether the vívoactive 5’s screen and documented mode-specific details justify its price over the vívoactive 4 where you shop. Current prices and retailer availability have not been established.
