The Garmin Swim 2 is most compelling if swimming is your main sport: it combines dedicated pool and open-water tracking, detailed swim metrics, and wrist-based heart rate in a light watch. Its pool counts and rest detection were not flawless in every historical review, and its broader sports-watch features are less of a draw. Choose it for swim-specific tools; look at a more rounded multisport watch if you want equal depth for running, cycling, and smartwatch use.
What the Garmin Swim 2 is designed to do
Garmin positions the Swim 2 as a swimming watch, with separate activity profiles for pool and open-water sessions. The distinction matters: pool tracking counts lengths against a configured pool size, while open-water distance and pace rely on satellite positioning.
Garmin lists support for GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. In the pool, its recorded metrics include lengths, distance, pace, stroke count, stroke type, and SWOLF, as well as drill logging, rest features, alerts, and downloadable workouts. Open-water fields include distance, pace, stroke count and rate, stroke distance, and SWOLF. Activity analysis and workout creation or sharing are available through Garmin Connect.

Pool and open-water tracking
Pool swims
Set the pool length before starting a session. Length counts depend on the watch recognizing turns, so a wrong pool setting or turns that are difficult to detect can undermine distance and pace figures. Garmin supports custom pool workouts and swim data fields.
#1 Best Overall
- Easy-to-use running smartwatch with built-in GPS for pace/distance and wrist-based heart rate; brilliant AMOLED touchscreen display with traditional button controls; lightweight design in 43 mm size
- Up to 11 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 19 hours in GPS mode
- Reach your goals with personalized daily suggested workouts that adapt based on performance and recovery; use Garmin Coach and race adaptive training plans to get workout suggestions for specific events

- As soon as you wake up, get your morning report with an overview of your sleep, recovery and training outlook alongside weather and HRV status (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
Historical reviews did not agree on pool performance in every test. TechRadar’s January 2020 review reported that the watch could overcount by a lap or two over longer swims, while 220 Triathlon reported accurate test swims in 20 m and 25 m pools; its 20 m test used a custom pool-length setting. These are reviewer observations, not a guarantee of results for every swimmer, unit, or firmware version.
Open-water swims
In open water, the watch uses satellite positioning to estimate distance and pace rather than counting pool lengths. TechRadar praised its open-water GPS in its 2020 review. GPS-based swim tracking is useful for route and distance context, but the available reviews do not establish exact accuracy in all locations or conditions.

Rest detection and intervals
The Swim 2 has pool rest features, but TechRadar reported in 2020 that auto-rest could lag and sometimes mark rest after a shorter pause than expected. If precise interval boundaries matter, the reviewer described using the watch’s lap controls as a practical alternative to relying entirely on automatic detection.

Underwater heart rate: useful context, not a definitive reading
Garmin advertises wrist-based heart-rate tracking underwater. It offers a convenient way to follow broad effort trends without a separate sensor, but independent review evidence does not justify treating each reading as definitive. TechRadar’s January 2020 comparison found the Swim 2’s optical readings somewhat below a Polar OH1; the reviewer cautioned that comparing one optical sensor with another is not a perfect test. Wareable likewise described heart rate as useful guidance while noting the difficulty of underwater measurement.

Design, display, fit, and water rating
Garmin specifies a 42 × 42 × 11.4 mm case weighing 36 g, with a 1.04-inch transflective MIP display at 208 × 208 pixels. The standard band fits wrists with a circumference of 129–197 mm; Garmin identifies an optional larger replacement band for 151–219 mm wrists. The watch uses Garmin’s proprietary plug charger and ships with a charging cable.
Garmin rates the watch at 5 ATM. Its owner’s manual describes that rating as pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 m; this is the manufacturer’s water-rating description, not a claim of scuba-diving capability. Garmin lists 50 hours of activity history.

Battery life depends on the activity mode and region
Garmin’s regional product pages give different estimates for activity use. The GB page lists up to 13 hours in GPS plus optical heart-rate mode and up to 72 hours in pool plus optical heart-rate mode. The Singapore page lists up to 12 hours in GPS plus optical heart-rate mode and up to 2.5 days in pool plus optical heart-rate mode. Both pages list up to seven days in smartwatch mode. Garmin’s manual says actual runtime varies with enabled features and environmental factors, and the sources do not explain the regional difference.
How it compares with a broader sports watch
The key trade-off is specialization versus breadth. The Swim 2’s dedicated pool and open-water profiles, drill and rest tools, and swim-specific data fields make it a focused option for people who want swim information front and center. Its basic run, bike, cardio, and everyday tracking features mean it is not limited to swimming, but TechRadar characterized its non-swim functionality as less developed than that of broader sports watches.

| Consideration | Garmin Swim 2 | Broader sports watch |
|---|---|---|
| Swim tools | Dedicated pool and open-water profiles, plus swim-focused metrics and pool features. | Compare the specific model’s swim profiles, workout tools, and metrics; capabilities vary by watch. |
| Pool setup | Configure pool length; lap counting depends on turn recognition. | Check whether its pool settings and lap detection suit your swimming and pool. |
| Running and cycling | Basic run and bike tracking are listed, but swim is its focus. | Often the more relevant choice if training features across several sports matter equally; assess the specific model. |
| Smartwatch use | Everyday tracking is present, but it is not the central strength emphasized by reviewers. | Compare notifications and other smartwatch features on the exact model you are considering. |
| Battery comparison | Use the regional estimate for the mode you need; the GB and Singapore activity estimates differ. | Compare like-for-like activity modes and manufacturer estimates, not just headline smartwatch figures. |
Should you buy the Garmin Swim 2?
It is a reasonable fit for a swimmer who values dedicated swim metrics and wants both pool and open-water tracking in a light device. It is less persuasive if you need a single watch with equally developed running, cycling, and smartwatch capabilities. Before buying, check current local stock, whether the unit is new or used, seller and firmware/support status, and compatibility of any replacement band or charging accessory; current price and availability are not established here.
