To make a Garmin watch quieter and less likely to light up at night, set up its sleep-specific controls rather than changing daytime settings. On watches with Focus Modes, go to Watch Settings > Focus Modes > Sleep and review the schedule, display, notifications, sound and vibration. Other models may offer Sleep Mode or “During Sleep” options in their regular settings; Garmin menus vary by model.
First, check which sleep controls your Garmin has
Garmin watches do not all use the same sleep interface. Some newer compatible models have Focus Modes with a dedicated Sleep profile. Other watches may provide sleep display or notification controls without the Focus Modes menu. Garmin’s current Focus Modes support page lists supported models across select D2, Enduro, fēnix, Forerunner, quatix, tactix, Venu and vívoactive families; compatibility depends on the specific model.
If you cannot find Focus Modes, consult your watch’s owner’s manual for “Customizing Sleep Mode,” “During Sleep,” or sleep display settings. Do not assume that instructions for another Garmin model use the same labels or menu path.
| Watch interface | Where to start | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Focus Modes available | Watch Settings > Focus Modes > Sleep | Sleep schedule, Watch Face, Notifications & Alerts, Sound & Vibe, and Display & Brightness |
| No Focus Modes menu | Use the watch’s manual to find Sleep Mode or sleep-specific display and alert options | Look for controls such as “During Sleep”; exact options vary by model |
Set the sleep schedule and choose what changes
On a Focus Modes watch, open Watch Settings > Focus Modes > Sleep. Set the days and times when the Sleep profile should apply, then inspect its individual settings. Garmin says the watch can still track sleep outside the scheduled hours, so the schedule controls the profile’s behaviors rather than defining the only period when sleep can be recorded.

Stop the screen from lighting up at night
On compatible AMOLED models, Always On Display and gesture are disabled during the scheduled sleep window. Review Display & Brightness in Sleep Focus if you want the screen to stay dark while you sleep. Garmin notes that Always On Display shortens battery life between charges, but does not publish a quantified estimate of overnight savings from turning it off.

If turning your wrist does not wake the display when expected, check the sleep schedule first. The model may also restrict gesture during sleep; Garmin’s display troubleshooting guidance addresses sleep schedules and wrist gestures.

Use the Notifications & Alerts setting inside Sleep Focus to control alerts specifically for sleep. Focus Mode settings can override general Smart Notification settings, so changing the ordinary notification setup may not change what happens during the sleep window. On watches without Focus Modes, look for a sleep-specific “During Sleep” notification setting if the model provides one. For notifications from selected apps, supported watches may offer on-device controls. Android users can also manage app notifications through Garmin Connect; on iOS, delivery depends on the iPhone’s notification settings. The available controls differ by watch model and phone platform, as described in Garmin’s notification setup guide.

Some touchscreen models have a sleep touch setting separate from the normal touchscreen controls. Garmin documents an Auto option that allows a tap to wake the backlight, while buttons are needed to navigate away from the watch face. Check the setting on your own watch if taps keep lighting the display or touch does not behave as expected; this option is not universal. See Garmin’s touchscreen guidance.

If your watch still lights up or alerts you
- The screen wakes during sleep: Confirm that the Sleep schedule is active at that time, then check Display & Brightness and whether your model supports gesture during sleep.
- Notifications still arrive: Review Notifications & Alerts inside Sleep Focus, since it can take precedence over general Smart Notification settings.
- A setting or menu is missing: Your model may not support Focus Modes or that particular control. Check its owner’s manual for sleep-specific options rather than applying a different model’s path.
- Only some apps are affected: Check the app-level settings available for your watch and phone platform; not every combination offers identical controls.
