ZDNET reviewer Matthew Miller says Garmin’s fēnix 9 Pro is the best Garmin watch he has worn. After a month with the 51 mm model across running, biking, rowing, fishing, hiking and sleep, what stood out was its mix of multisport tools, navigation, a bright AMOLED screen and inReach connectivity designed to work beyond a phone’s cellular coverage. That is a strong personal endorsement—not proof that it is the best smartwatch for every buyer.

What impressed the reviewer

Miller’s review describes a month of use of the 51 mm fēnix 9 Pro in a range of activities. He reports accurate location tracking and good heart-rate performance during his own use, and calls the watch “clearly the best Garmin watch I have ever worn and a true flagship watch.” Those are his observations and judgment, not results from a controlled comparison or a guarantee of accuracy for every wearer.

The appeal is the combination: a multisport GPS watch with navigation and a high-brightness AMOLED display, plus connectivity options intended to reduce reliance on a phone. Garmin describes the fēnix 9 Pro as a premium multisport GPS smartwatch. Its U.S. lineup includes 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm sizes, with configurations that can include inReach connectivity and either AMOLED or a solar charging lens. See Garmin’s U.S. fēnix 9 Pro listing for the specific models and availability.

Can you leave your phone at home?

Potentially, for some outings and on applicable models—but not as a blanket replacement for a phone. Garmin says its inReach-connected versions offer LTE and satellite capabilities that include messaging, voice calling, LiveTrack and interactive SOS. These features require an active service plan. LTE depends on coverage, which is not universal, and satellite and emergency functions have limitations. Check Garmin’s coverage, plan requirements and safety qualifications for your model and intended location before relying on any of these functions.

#1 Best Overall
Garmin fēnix® 8 Solar, Sapphire, 51mm, DLC Titanium, Black/Pebble Gray
  • Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a 1.4” solar charged display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable titanium bezel and built-in LED flashlight for after-dark visibility
  • Battery performance: up to 48 days of battery life in smartwatch mode with solar charging (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions) and up to 149 hours in GPS mode with solar charging (assumes continuous use for entire period in 50,000 lux conditions) — all with an always-on display, so you’re ready to take on the toughest challenges
  • Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
  • Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more

That distinction matters most when the watch is being considered for safety: connectivity features can add options, but they do not guarantee that a message or SOS request will get through in every place or circumstance. The review’s phone-free framing is best understood as a reason to consider the watch’s connectivity, not a promise that every trip can be made without a phone.

Screen and size: choose the right configuration

The 51 mm unit Miller tested has a 1.5-inch AMOLED display with 466 × 466-pixel resolution, according to his review. Garmin said in August 2026 that “The fēnix 9 Pro AMOLED displays offer up to 3,000 nits of brightness.” That is Garmin’s maximum-brightness claim for AMOLED displays; the review’s screen dimensions and resolution refer specifically to the 51 mm model, so check the selected size’s specifications rather than assuming they apply to all variants.

Case size is also a fit decision, not just a display choice. Garmin lists 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm models in the U.S. Choose a size that sits comfortably on your wrist and suits your preference for screen area and case presence. The lineup also distinguishes AMOLED and solar lens options; weigh the display type and charging priorities against the activities and conditions in which you expect to use the watch.

What it costs—and what to check before buying

Miller’s September 28, 2026 review listed $1,300 at Amazon for the tested configuration. That is a historical listing price, not a verified current price; check the current price and exact configuration before purchase. The review also says Miller separately bought a 26 mm Garmin QuickFit ComfortFit fabric band for $59.99. Confirm the band’s compatibility with your chosen model and check what is included in its current package before budgeting for accessories.

For an inReach model, include the active service plan in the ownership calculation. The watch’s purchase price alone does not cover the ongoing requirement for those connectivity features.

Who should consider the fēnix 9 Pro?

  • It may suit you if you want a premium multisport GPS watch, value navigation and a bright display, and expect to use its activity features across several sports.
  • Compare configurations carefully if wrist fit, AMOLED versus solar charging, or inReach features will determine whether the watch meets your needs. The features and availability vary by model.
  • Think twice about the total commitment if you would not use its advanced sports or connectivity features, or if an active service plan and premium hardware price do not fit your budget.

Miller’s month-long experience makes the fēnix 9 Pro sound compelling for an active user who wants a capable watch with more independence from a phone. Whether that enthusiasm translates to value for you depends on choosing the right size and feature set—and on treating inReach as a plan-dependent option, not guaranteed emergency coverage.
