The standard Garmin fēnix 8 AMOLED is the stronger fit if your priority is long intervals between charges and a multisport watch with dedicated training, navigation and dive features. Apple’s newer Watch Ultra 3 has a shorter manufacturer-estimated battery interval, but adds satellite communications and is designed to work within Apple’s connected-watch ecosystem. Neither manufacturer’s battery figures come from a shared test, so treat them as estimates for different modes—not a head-to-head result.
Which generations are being compared?
This comparison is between Garmin’s standard fēnix 8 AMOLED, announced August 27, 2024, and Apple Watch Ultra 3, announced September 9, 2025. The fēnix 8 is a family with AMOLED models in 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm sizes; Garmin also announced separate solar-display fēnix 8 options in 47 mm and 51 mm. The solar models are not the AMOLED versions compared here. Garmin’s launch announcement describes the standard fēnix 8 lineup and features.
Garmin announced a distinct fēnix 8 Pro family in September 2025, with AMOLED or MicroLED models and satellite/LTE-related services. Those Pro capabilities should not be attributed to the 2024 standard fēnix 8. Garmin listed a starting price of $1,199.99 for the Pro AMOLED at launch; that is dated announcement pricing, not a current retail quote. Garmin’s fēnix 8 Pro announcement identifies that later family.
How do their manufacturer battery estimates compare?
Garmin’s fēnix 8 Series owner’s manual, marked September 2026, gives estimates by case size and display setting. Apple’s Ultra 3 announcement gives separate daily-use, Low Power Mode and outdoor workout figures. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent measurements or results from a common protocol; differences in settings and use make a direct endurance ranking uncertain.

Garmin cautions that actual fēnix battery life varies with enabled features and sensors, including wrist-based heart rate, smartphone notifications, GPS, internal sensors and connected sensors. See Garmin’s fēnix 8 battery information for the estimates and qualifications. Apple’s three Ultra 3 figures describe different operating conditions, so the 20-hour workout estimate should not be mistaken for its daily-use estimate. Apple’s figures are in its Ultra 3 announcement.

Garmin fēnix 8 AMOLED
Garmin lists an LED flashlight, strength-training features and dive capability to 40 meters for the standard fēnix 8. Its built-in speaker and microphone support calls when the watch is paired with a compatible smartphone. Garmin also says certain voice commands can run without a phone connection; that is not the same as saying every call or connected feature works phone-free. These are Garmin’s product descriptions, not independent assessments of accuracy, durability or real-world performance.

Apple Watch Ultra 3
Apple describes two-way satellite communications for use outside cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, including Emergency SOS via satellite and messaging functions. Apple states that satellite communications are free for an initial two-year period. Some messaging and location-sharing capabilities depend on an active cellular plan, and satellite features may depend on the user’s region and service availability. Check Apple’s Ultra 3 feature and availability details for the conditions that apply where you live.

The satellite capabilities described here belong to Ultra 3 and the fēnix 8 Pro family—not the standard 2024 fēnix 8 AMOLED. If off-grid communication is decisive, compare the exact model and the services available in your region rather than relying on the shared fēnix 8 name.

Which watch makes more sense for your phone and priorities?
- Choose the fēnix 8 AMOLED if: you want a multisport-focused watch, value Garmin’s listed training and dive features, or prioritize the longer smartwatch-mode estimates—especially on the 51 mm model. Consider whether its larger case and your preferred always-on setting suit you.
- Choose Apple Watch Ultra 3 if: satellite communication features are important, you want Apple’s stated Ultra 3 safety and messaging functions, or Apple’s connected-watch ecosystem is central to your choice. Confirm regional feature availability and any cellular-plan conditions.
- Compare exact configurations before buying: the fēnix 8 battery estimate changes substantially by size and display behavior. Retail prices and availability vary by market and date; the cited sources do not establish current local prices for the standard fēnix 8 or Ultra 3.
There is no independent comparative battery or performance test in the cited manufacturer materials. Garmin Vice President of Global Consumer Sales Dan Bartel described the fēnix line as having “premium features, materials and design” in the 2024 launch release; that is Garmin’s promotional statement, not an independent verdict.
