For golfers who prioritize Garmin’s newly announced swing and practice metrics, the Approach S72 is the more direct fit; for buyers who want a luxury-material watch and three included club-tracking sensors, the MARQ Golfer (Gen 2) Carbon Edition is the distinctive option. The U.S. suggested retail price for the S72 starts at $799.99, while Garmin’s U.S. listing for the specified MARQ Carbon Edition is $3,100. Those prices reflect very different product positioning, not evidence that one watch plays golf more accurately. Garmin announced the S72 on October 6, 2026, and the feature and battery claims below are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
Which Garmin golf watch is the better fit?
Choose the Approach S72 if you want the newer golf-practice emphasis: Garmin highlights on-wrist swing metrics, driving-range activity and putting analytics, alongside smartwatch and health functions. It is offered in 43 mm and 47 mm sizes.
Choose the MARQ Golfer (Gen 2) Carbon Edition if the premium construction and included club sensors matter more to you than minimizing cost. That specific configuration has a fused carbon fiber housing and bezel inlay, Grade 5 titanium components, a domed sapphire crystal, and three Approach CT10 sensors in the box.

“MARQ Golfer” can refer to different generations and configurations. The MARQ specifications and $3,100 price in this comparison apply to Garmin’s U.S. MARQ Golfer (Gen 2) Carbon Edition, part number 010-02722-20—not every watch sold under the MARQ Golfer name.

What the S72 adds for golf practice
Garmin’s October 6, 2026 S72 announcement emphasizes details for practice as well as course play. It names hand speed, backswing length and wrist rotation among the swing metrics, and lists a driving-range activity and putting analytics. Golf biometrics are also part of the announced feature set.
That makes the S72 the clearer choice on published feature emphasis for a golfer looking to review practice sessions and putting, rather than buying primarily for materials or included club sensors. The announcement does not establish that these metrics improve scores or that the S72 measures them more accurately than the MARQ.

- Stunning 1.4” AMOLED display brings more than 43,000 preloaded full-color CourseView maps to life on your wrist
- Look good on and off the course with a lightweight, stylish design and ceramic bezel
- Battery life: up to 16 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours in GPS mode
- Enhanced golf course maps allow you to see intricate details with the ability to pan and zoom for narrowing in on your target distance
- Improved virtual caddie feature shows your shot dispersion data and suggests a club based on a variety of factors, including your historical swing data, elevation, wind speed, wind direction and more
What the MARQ Carbon Edition adds
The MARQ Carbon Edition combines Garmin golf functions with a broader multisport and outdoor feature set, while distinguishing itself through its materials and included accessories. Its listing specifies Virtual Caddie, wind data, PlaysLike distance, green and hazard views, PinPointer and golf performance statistics, as well as three CT10 sensors.
Garmin’s October 2022 MARQ Gen 2 collection announcement gave a launch-era price range of $1,900–$2,400 for that collection. That historical range is not the current listed price of the later Carbon Edition; Garmin’s U.S. product page lists that variant at $3,100.
Membership, course coverage and included sensors
Green reading and contour data
Do not assume that green information is available everywhere or included without conditions. Garmin describes S72 green-reading features as requiring an active Garmin Golf membership and limits green-reading coverage to select courses. For the MARQ Carbon Edition, Garmin likewise conditions green contour data on an active Garmin Golf membership and select-course availability.
Rank #3
- Stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
- Be comfortable on and off the course with the lightweight ComfortFit nylon strap
- Battery life: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 15 hours in GPS mode
- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Playslike Distance feature tells you how far each shot truly is, with adjusted yardage for elevation changes
Course maps
The Carbon Edition listing specifies more than 43,000 preloaded CourseView maps. That is a published count for this configuration; it does not mean that every course-specific feature, including green contours, is available on every mapped course.

CT10 sensors
Garmin lists three Approach CT10 sensors in the MARQ Carbon Edition box. The cited S72 announcement does not identify included CT10 sensors, which is not proof that the S72 is incompatible with them. Check the current product information for the exact watch and sensor configuration before buying separate tracking accessories.
Price, fit and battery: how to weigh the trade-offs
Price versus construction
The U.S. prices in the cited Garmin materials are $799.99 starting suggested retail for the S72 and $3,100 for the MARQ Carbon Edition. The MARQ’s higher listed price accompanies its carbon fiber and titanium construction, sapphire crystal, broader feature positioning and three included CT10 sensors. Whether those differences justify the extra cost depends on which features and materials you value; the specifications do not establish a performance advantage on the course.
Rank #4
- New round watch design with a high-resolution sunlight-readable display
- Battery life: up to 30 hours in GPS Mode
- More than 42,000 courses preloaded from around the world
- Keep score right on the watch and upload directly to the Garmin Golf app (when paired with a compatible smartphone) to participate in weekly leaderboards
- Automatically keep track of your score and how far you hit with each club with compatible Approach CT10 club tracking sensors (sold separately)
Size and all-day wear
The S72 offers 43 mm and 47 mm sizes with a ComfortFit fabric band. The MARQ Carbon Edition is a 46 mm watch with a heavier premium-material build. These specifications help narrow the fit choice, but they do not establish which watch will feel more comfortable on an individual wrist.
Battery by mode
For the larger S72, Garmin claims up to 20 hours on course and up to 16 days with GPS off. For the MARQ Carbon Edition, Garmin claims up to 16 days in smartwatch mode (6 days with always-on display), up to 42 hours in GPS-only mode, and up to 20 hours using all satellite systems plus multi-band. Because the figures describe different modes, they do not show which watch will last longer during a particular round or under identical settings.
Is the MARQ Golfer worth the extra cost?
It may suit a buyer who specifically wants the Carbon Edition’s materials and luxury-watch construction, values its golf and broader outdoor or sports functions, and can use the three included CT10 sensors. A golfer focused on Garmin’s newly announced swing-practice metrics and a lower starting price has a stronger feature-and-cost case for the S72. Neither the official specifications nor the listed price alone answer whether the MARQ is worth the difference for a particular player.
Best Value
- Slim design with a stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display that brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Pair with optional Approach CT1 or CT10 club trackers (sold separately) for shot-tracking capabilities, so you have a clearer picture of which parts of your game to focus on
- Easily keep score as you play, and upload to the Garmin Golf smartphone app for advanced stat tracking and handicap calculation
- Leave your phone in the cart and get smart notifications sent to your wrist — including emails, texts and alerts when paired with your iPhone or Android smartphone
Garmin described the S72 as intended to help golfers understand more of their game, including through biometric data and swing metrics. That is the manufacturer’s promotional positioning, not independent evidence of accuracy or improved performance.
What the published specifications cannot tell you
The available official materials do not provide independent comparative measurements of golf-feature accuracy, battery life in matched real-play conditions, wearer comfort or scoring outcomes. Treat the stated specifications as Garmin’s claims, and make a side-by-side accuracy or endurance judgment only with independent evidence.
