Ganglia is open-source monitoring software designed for high-performance computing environments such as clusters and grids. Its defining idea is to share metrics locally within clusters, then aggregate information across clusters in a hierarchy. NVIDIA’s overview uses the same description: “Ganglia is a scalable distributed monitoring system for high-performance computing systems such as clusters and Grids.”

What Ganglia monitors—and how it is organized

Ganglia is an infrastructure monitoring system for groups of machines, rather than a general-purpose application performance or end-user monitoring service. Its architecture separates two jobs: gmond observes and shares machine and cluster state, while gmetad gathers data from cluster sources and makes a higher-level view available.

This division supports federation: a monitoring view can combine multiple clusters, and intermediary gmetad instances can pass information up a hierarchy. The Ganglia documentation describes this design and its components in the project wiki.

What each Ganglia component does

gmond: collect and share cluster-level state

The Ganglia Monitoring Daemon, gmond, runs on monitored machines. It observes host-state changes, announces state to peers, listens for announcements from other nodes, and can respond with XML describing cluster state. Documentation describes UDP with XDR for metric distribution and XML over TCP for state responses.

gmetad: gather and aggregate sources

The Ganglia Meta Daemon, gmetad, polls configured sources. A source may be a gmond or another gmetad, allowing data to move from cluster-level monitoring into a larger federation. It parses XML, stores numeric, time-varying metrics in round-robin databases, and exports aggregated XML for clients.

Documented configurations can include redundant addresses for a data source to support failover. The exact configuration syntax and behavior should be checked against the version installed in a particular environment.

Web frontend and command-line tools

The documented PHP web frontend turns data collected by gmetad into a graphical interface. Two command-line tools serve different needs:

  • gmetric publishes custom metrics about monitored hosts.
  • gstat queries metric information directly from a gmond.

How metrics move through the hierarchy

Within a cluster, gmond instances use listen-and-announce behavior to share state. Ganglia documentation describes multicast or unicast announcements, XDR transport, and XML representations. Across clusters, representative sources connect through point-to-point relationships; gmetad collects and aggregates their data. The resulting XML can be consumed by the frontend or other clients.

Necto Cellular Temperature Monitor, Power Outage Alarm & Humidity Sensor
  • 2 Years of Cellular Service Included – Necto offers the most affordable cellular-enabled sensor with 2 full years of 4G LTE service included—no hidden fees, contracts, or WiFi required. With a built-in multi-network SIM card, you can remotely monitor conditions 24/7 and receive real-time alerts. After 2 years, you can renew the subscription from the app for only $6.99 a month.
  • Instant Alert & 24/7 Monitoring - Keep tabs on your Home, RV, Car, or Pets from anywhere with the 3-in-1 temperature, humidity & power outage monitor. Customize the high and low temp/humidity thresholds and add up to 5 contacts for unlimited text and email alerts. Receive real-time alerts if critical changes in temp/humidity or a power loss occurs.
  • Rechargeable Internal Battery - The Necto smart RV and pet monitor has a 3 day long-lasting rechargeable battery. Unlike WiFi sensors, Necto provides continuous monitoring in the event of a power outage, via its built-in battery and cellular technology. Receive instant alerts on your phone when battery power is low or if the device disconnects from the network.
  • Intuitive Mobile App & Easy Setup - Our user-friendly mobile app gives you remote access to your sensor from anywhere. Use your smartphone or PC to customize alert thresholds, view past readings, and manage device settings with ease. The sensor takes minutes to install and requires no technical expertise. Simply activate the device through the app and plug it into any standard wall outlet.
  • Fast Refresh & Free Data Storage - The industrial built-in temperature and humidity sensor takes readings every 10 seconds to make sure the temp/humidity are within the safe range. Every 10 minutes the most recent reading is updated on the online portal. Readings are stored on our servers for 1 year and can be downloaded anytime on a CSV file.

The project describes XML as its data representation, XDR as compact, portable transport, and RRDtool as the storage and visualization mechanism. In practical terms, Ganglia separates local collection and sharing from federation and historical graphing; these are documented roles, not a claim about comparative performance against other monitoring products.

Adding custom and GPU metrics

Publish host-specific values with gmetric

When the standard metrics do not cover a host-specific measurement, gmetric can publish an arbitrary metric for a monitored host. This makes custom instrumentation possible without changing the distinction between node-level sharing and higher-level aggregation.

Optional NVIDIA GPU integration

NVIDIA documents a Python module that monitors NVIDIA GPUs through Python bindings for NVML. The described metrics include GPU temperature, memory usage, and utilization. This is an optional integration, not a built-in feature guaranteed to be present in every Ganglia package or deployment. See NVIDIA’s GPU metrics module documentation.

What Ganglia’s scalability claims do—and do not—establish

Ganglia’s project overview characterizes it as scalable and intended for HPC clusters and grids. That description explains the system’s design goal; it is not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of capacity for a current deployment. The documentation’s historical statements about cluster use or node counts should likewise be read as project claims, not measured present-day limits.

Check current compatibility before deploying

Project and repository pages establish Ganglia’s software and documentation history, but do not establish a current release cadence, maintenance guarantee, supported operating-system matrix, or compatibility with a particular package set. Check current project release artifacts and the target distribution’s packages before choosing it for a new or existing environment. The project’s repositories and licensing information are available through the Ganglia GitHub organization; repository presence alone does not guarantee active support.
