Choose a GaN charger if a smaller, high-power design matters to you; choose a standard USB-C charger if it meets your device’s needs and size is not a concern. GaN is a material used in a charger’s internal power components. USB-C is the connector, while USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a protocol that lets compatible devices and chargers negotiate power. The GaN label alone does not promise faster charging, higher efficiency, or better safety.
GaN and USB-C are not competing technologies
“GaN versus USB-C” compares different things. Gallium nitride (GaN) is a semiconductor material that can be used in a charger’s power circuitry. USB-C describes the connector shape. USB PD is a charging standard that compatible equipment uses to negotiate how much power to deliver over a connection. A charger can therefore be both GaN and USB-C.
USB PD supports power up to 240 W under the specification, but that ceiling does not mean every USB-C charger, device, or cable supports it. The usable power depends on the capabilities of the charger, the device, and the cable in that setup. USB-IF explains the 240 W extension and the need for a suitable full-featured USB-C cable in its USB Power Delivery guidance.
What GaN changes—and what it does not
Size and power density
GaN can help designers build compact chargers with high power output. Infineon’s design materials illustrate this with a 65 W dual-port GaN reference charger, and identify size and power density as design considerations. That demonstrates what a particular design can achieve, not what every GaN charger will look like. Compare the actual dimensions and weight of the products you are considering rather than assuming that the GaN model is smaller.
#1 Best Overall
- Faster & Cooler Choice: This UGREEN USB C Charger Block supports a max power transmission of 30W. Within 30 minutes, it can charge your iPhone 17 or Galaxy S26 to about 60%. Not only that, the Always-On Temperature Detection also ensures that it will not overheat during the fast charging process.
- Spend Less, Charge More: This USB C Charger has 3 interfaces, including 2 USB C and 1 USB A interface, which ensures its wide compatibility and can be used with different devices. You can charge three of your devices at the same time. Just enjoy the convenience of multiple interfaces.
- Real safety is safe inside and out: The charger features an upgraded GaN II chip, offering efficient heat dissipation and faster response to over-voltage, over-current, and short-circuit protection. Its housing is made of flame-retardant matte PC material, ensuring complete safety both inside and out for this compact charger.
- Compact and lightweight: This charger easily fits into your bag or pocket, making it perfect for travel, office, or daily carry. Its small size doesn’t just save space — it also keeps your desk tidy, reduces clutter, and lets you charge multiple devices anywhere without hassle.
- Multi-Protocol Charging: Supports PD, QC, and PPS fast-charging protocols. Tip: When using multiple ports simultaneously, single outputs up to 15W. For original Mag Safe accessories, use a single port.
Efficiency depends on the specific charger
There is no basis here for concluding that all GaN chargers are more efficient than all conventional chargers. For example, Infineon’s selection guide reports full-load efficiency of 92.9% at 115 V AC and 93.15% at 230 V AC for its specific 65 W dual-port GaN reference design. Those are figures for that design under the stated conditions, not a category-wide comparison. See the Infineon USB-C charger and adapter board selection guide.
GaN does not itself determine charging speed or safety
A charger’s charging performance depends on its output capabilities and protocol support, as well as what the connected device can accept. A higher-rated charger does not automatically force its maximum output into a phone or laptop: compatible equipment negotiates the power it can use. The GaN label alone also does not establish a product’s safety. Compare the specific model’s output specifications and safety certifications rather than treating the material as a substitute for those details.

How to choose a charger for your devices
- Check the device’s charging requirements. Look up the charger output recommended by the device maker, including wattage and supported voltage/current profiles. Choose a charger that can provide a compatible profile.
- Check USB PD and PPS support. USB PD is relevant when your device charges through USB-C and supports that protocol. Check for PPS (Programmable Power Supply) if your device requires it; wattage alone does not confirm protocol compatibility.
- For multiple devices, inspect power sharing. A charger’s advertised total wattage may not be available from each port at the same time. Check the per-port output and how the charger reallocates power when two or more devices are connected.
- Match the cable to the power level. Use a cable rated for the power the charger and device negotiate. Higher USB PD levels may require an appropriately rated, full-featured USB-C cable.
- Compare the real-world trade-off. Check the charger’s actual size and weight against its price and the space you will save. Compare model-specific safety certifications as well; the GaN designation does not replace them.
Are GaN chargers faster, and do you need one for a laptop?
Not just because they use GaN. A GaN charger may offer high output in a compact design, but charging speed depends on whether the charger supports the power profile the device can use. For a laptop, check the manufacturer’s required or recommended USB-C charging output and protocol support. If a standard USB-C charger meets those requirements, GaN is not necessary; if you want a more compact charger, consider a GaN model that meets them.
