Choose a gaming monitor by matching its resolution and refresh rate to the games you play and the frame rate your PC or console can deliver. Then compare measured pixel response, input lag, and variable refresh rate (VRR) support—not just headline specifications. A higher number is not automatically a better fit if your system cannot use it or the connection limits the available mode.

Start with your games, system, and screen size

Competitive games often reward high frame rates and clear motion. Detailed, immersive games and text-heavy use can benefit more from added resolution and pixel density. Your choice also depends on screen size and viewing distance: the same resolution looks sharper on a smaller screen because its pixels are packed more densely.

For example, RTINGS reports 109 pixels per inch (PPI) for a 27-inch 1440p monitor and 163 PPI for a 27-inch 4K monitor. A 24-inch 1440p display has higher pixel density than a 32-inch display at the same resolution. These examples illustrate the relationship between size and sharpness; they are not universal size recommendations. More pixels also require more rendering work, which can make it harder for a PC to maintain a high frame rate.

Resolution: detail versus the frame rate your system can sustain

Resolution is the number of pixels in the image. At a given screen size, a higher resolution can show finer detail and make text appear sharper. The tradeoff is that the graphics hardware has more pixels to render. If high frame rates in competitive games are your priority and your PC has limited graphics performance, a lower resolution may be the more practical choice. If you value fine detail, immersive visuals, or clear text, a higher resolution may be worth the rendering cost.

Think of resolution as a joint decision with screen size, viewing distance, game settings, and graphics hardware—not as an isolated quality score. RTINGS’ gaming monitor buying guide discusses these tradeoffs and provides the pixel-density examples above.

Refresh rate: how often the monitor can update

Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how many times per second a monitor updates. Frame rate, measured in frames per second (fps), is how many frames the PC or console supplies. They are related but not interchangeable: a 240 Hz monitor does not make a game render at 240 fps. To benefit from a high-refresh mode, the source needs to deliver frames at a useful rate, and the connection must support the chosen resolution, refresh rate, and color depth.

Each refresh interval corresponds to a shorter frame time as the rate rises. The following frame times are calculated as 1,000 divided by refresh rate, as reported by RTINGS.com in 2026:

  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Refresh rate Frame time
60 Hz 16.67 ms
120 Hz 8.33 ms
144 Hz 6.94 ms
165 Hz 6.06 ms
240 Hz 4.17 ms
360 Hz 2.78 ms
480 Hz 2.08 ms
540 Hz 1.85 ms
720 Hz 1.39 ms

A higher refresh rate can make motion look smoother and reduce persistence blur, particularly in fast action. The improvement is not equally noticeable at every step: RTINGS finds the difference between 60 and 120 Hz more apparent than the difference between 360 and 480 Hz. There is no universal point at which everyone stops seeing a difference, and a monitor’s maximum refresh rate alone does not establish its overall performance. See RTINGS’ refresh-rate explainer for more detail.

Check the mode your cable and ports can actually carry

Maximum refresh rate can depend on resolution, color depth, and which input you use. For example, RTINGS reports that the Dell Alienware AW3423DWF supports up to 165 Hz, while its HDMI 2.0 input in the stated setup is limited to 100 Hz at 8-bit color or 60 Hz at 10-bit. That is a model-specific example, not a general limit for every HDMI 2.0 display. Before buying, check the monitor’s specifications for the exact resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and port combination you plan to use.

Confirm console output limits

Console support varies by model and output mode. RTINGS’ buying guide reports support up to 120 Hz for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, and says Switch 2 is limited to 60 Hz at 4K. Because console capabilities and monitor compatibility can change or depend on setup, check the current official documentation for your console and the specifications for the monitor before relying on a particular mode.

Pixel response time: how quickly pixels change

Pixel response time describes how quickly a pixel transitions from one color to another. Slow transitions can leave smears or blur behind moving objects. Overdrive settings try to speed transitions, but an aggressive setting can cause overshoot, sometimes visible as inverse ghosting. Two monitors with the same refresh rate can therefore differ in motion clarity.

Do not treat a “1 ms” marketing claim as a complete performance result. The measured outcome depends on the transitions tested, refresh rate, and overdrive setting, among other factors. RTINGS’ newer Test Bench 2.0 and later methodology uses Cumulative Absolute Deviation (CAD), which combines response time and overshoot; results from that methodology are not directly comparable with older test benches. Its detailed methodology says the response metrics characterize performance at the monitor’s maximum refresh rate at native resolution. See the response-time test methodology when comparing measurements, and make sure the test method and operating mode are relevant to your use.

Input lag: a separate delay from pixel response

Input lag is the time a monitor takes to process a received signal and begin displaying the image. Pixel response time is the subsequent color transition of the pixels. Low input lag does not guarantee fast transitions, and fast transitions do not guarantee low input lag. For reaction-based games, compare input-lag measurements at the refresh rate and display mode you expect to use. RTINGS explains its approach in its input-lag methodology.

VRR: keeping the display in step with changing frame rates

Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a monitor adjust its refresh to match a changing source frame rate, helping reduce screen tearing when frame delivery fluctuates. Common formats include AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC, and HDMI Forum VRR. Check that the specific monitor and graphics card or console support a compatible mode; a label by itself does not establish compatibility in every connection or setting.

VRR behavior can also vary by monitor. RTINGS notes that some displays may flicker during large frame-rate changes, especially in dark scenes. Look for testing of the particular model rather than assuming the issue either occurs on every monitor or never occurs.

A high-end 4K, high-refresh example

RTINGS’ 2026 gaming-monitor recommendations page, updated September 2, 2026, lists the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3 as its best gaming monitor. The page specifies a 32-inch QD-OLED panel, 240 Hz maximum refresh rate, and 3840 × 2160 native resolution. It is an example of a high-end 4K, high-refresh display, not a recommendation for every budget or system: a PC must be able to render the games at useful frame rates, and the chosen connection must support the intended mode. Product rankings and regional listings can change. See the RTINGS 2026 gaming-monitor recommendations for its listing.
