Before upgrading a gaming laptop’s RAM, check whether its memory is replaceable and confirm the exact model’s DDR generation, supported speed, capacity limit, and available slots. Those details determine what will work; there is no universal five-part RAM shopping list, and an upgrade does not guarantee a particular FPS increase.
1. Confirm your exact laptop model and whether its RAM is upgradeable
Start with the full model number, including any suffix or configuration identifier. Look it up in the manufacturer’s specifications or owner’s manual, then find the memory or service section. Do not rely on a family name alone: laptops sold under the same series can differ in their memory configuration.
Check whether the memory is replaceable, how much the exact configuration supports, how many slots it has, and whether a slot is already occupied. If the official documentation does not establish that the memory can be replaced, do not assume an upgrade is possible.
2. Match the RAM form factor and DDR generation
Most laptop memory upgrades use compact SODIMM modules rather than the longer DIMMs commonly used in desktop PCs. Confirm the required form factor in your laptop’s documentation before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
DDR4 and DDR5 are different memory generations, not interchangeable options. Choose the generation specified for your laptop; a module that fits physically is not necessarily compatible. Crucial’s RAM compatibility guide explains the need to check system documentation for the supported memory type, capacity, and slots.
3. Choose a supported speed, not just the highest advertised one
Compare the laptop’s supported memory speed with the speed listed for a candidate module. A higher-rated module does not ensure that the laptop will run RAM at that rate. Crucial cautions on its DDR5 laptop memory page that memory faster than the system supports will not deliver the expected speed and efficiency benefits.
Rank #2
- Boosts System Performance: 64GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x32GB) that operates at 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance

- ECC type=non-ECC, Form Factor=SODIMM, Pin count=262-pin, PC speed=PC5-38400, Voltage=1.1V, Rank and Configuration=2Rx8
Use the laptop’s documented limit as your guide. Do not treat a module’s headline speed as a promise of faster gaming performance.

4. Decide how much capacity to install and which slots to use
Stay within the maximum capacity documented for your exact laptop configuration. Check the current arrangement as well: a free slot may allow an addition, while a fully occupied configuration may require replacing an existing module. The manual or service guide can identify slot locations and supported arrangements.

- Boosts System Performance: 16GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x8GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance

For example, Crucial’s compatibility listing for the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-52 states two SODIMM slots and a 32GB DDR4 maximum. Those figures belong to that model listing; they are not a general limit for gaming laptops.

Follow the owner’s manual or model-specific service guide for opening the laptop, disconnecting power as directed, and locating the memory slots. If the instructions are unclear or opening the machine is outside your comfort level, use a qualified repair service.
- Prepare safely. Follow the laptop maker’s instructions before opening the case. Crucial advises touching an unpainted metal surface before handling memory to reduce the risk of static damage.
- Align the module. Match the SODIMM’s notch with the slot. It should align only in the correct orientation; do not force it.
- Insert and secure it. Crucial’s DRAM installation guide instructs users to push the SODIMM in at an angle, then press it down until the retaining clips engage. Do not use tools to install or remove the module.
- Reassemble and verify. Close the laptop according to its service instructions, then check the system information or firmware setup to confirm that the expected memory is detected. If it is not, power down and consult the model’s manual before checking the installation.
Will a RAM upgrade increase gaming FPS?
Not necessarily. The sources cited here do not establish a generalizable gaming benchmark or a predictable FPS gain from a laptop RAM upgrade. Results depend on the game, laptop configuration, and what is limiting performance. Choose an upgrade to address a documented capacity or compatibility need, not on the assumption of a guaranteed frame-rate increase.
