Whether you can upgrade a gaming laptop’s RAM or SSD—and which parts will fit—depends on its exact model and configuration. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s specifications and service manual for memory type, slots and capacity, plus the SSD interface, size and available space. “DDR5” or “M.2” alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.
Start with the exact laptop model
Find the full model name and submodel or product number, often printed on the laptop’s label or shown in system information. A product family can include different motherboards and configurations, so a part listed for one version may not fit another.
Use the laptop maker’s official specifications and model-specific service or hardware-maintenance manual as the controlling references. A memory or SSD compatibility finder can help narrow options, but verify its result against the documentation for your exact device. Crucial likewise notes that a laptop’s memory configuration and storage requirements are model-specific in its user guide.
What to check before buying RAM
- Upgradeability: Determine whether the memory is soldered, removable, or partly soldered with an additional slot. If it is soldered, it may not be replaceable.
- Memory type and form factor: Confirm the supported DDR generation and module type. SO-DIMM is common in upgradeable laptops, but do not assume your model uses it.
- Slots and current configuration: Check how many slots the laptop has, which are accessible, and whether existing modules occupy them.
- Capacity: Find the manufacturer-supported maximum total capacity and, where specified, the maximum per module.
- Speed and combinations: Check supported speeds and whether the system may run a faster module at a lower speed. Follow the manual’s guidance on paired modules and supported combinations.
- Module density and BIOS support: If considering newer, high-density modules, check platform compatibility and whether a BIOS update is required. Kingston notes that some first-generation DDR5 systems may need a motherboard-maker BIOS update for 24Gbit-based modules in its DDR5 guide.
Do not assume a new stick will work optimally alongside the installed one. Mixing modules can affect compatibility, speed, stability or channel configuration. If the laptop calls for a matched pair, buy a supported kit and follow its population rules.
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
For example, Kingston’s listing for the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16IAH7H identifies removable memory, two sockets, paired-module guidance and a 32 GB maximum. Those specifications apply to that listed model, not every Legion or gaming laptop. The listing also notes that speed can vary by configuration. See Kingston’s model-specific listing and confirm your own machine’s SKU before choosing RAM.
What to check before buying an SSD
- Replace or add: Check whether the laptop has a spare storage slot or whether installing a drive means replacing the existing one.
- Interface and protocol: Confirm whether the slot supports NVMe/PCIe or SATA. M.2 describes a physical form factor; it does not by itself establish which protocol the laptop supports.
- Physical length and clearance: Verify the supported drive length, such as M.2 2230, 2242 or 2280. Check any stated limits on drive thickness, single- or double-sided drives, heatsinks or thermal pads.
- Capacity and slot-specific limits: Consult the service manual for supported capacities and any differences between slots.
- Boot-drive migration: If replacing the drive that holds the operating system, plan for a system reinstall or drive migration and make a separate backup first.
The same Legion 5 Pro listing names NVMe M.2 2242 and 2280 forms. That illustrates why checking the exact supported length matters; it is not evidence that either size fits another laptop. Check the model listing against the laptop’s own manual.

How to compare compatible parts
Once compatibility is established, choose between options in this order:
- Confirm fit and support: Match the exact laptop configuration, interface, dimensions, capacity and memory population rules.
- Choose capacity for your use: Consider the games, applications and other workloads you actually run, along with the storage space your library needs.
- Compare RAM speed and timings: Do so only after confirming the supported capacity and module configuration. A faster-rated module may run at a lower supported speed.
- Compare SSD characteristics: Consider capacity, warranty, endurance specifications and performance relevant to your workload. A higher advertised interface speed does not by itself establish higher game frame rates.
- Account for installation: Check whether the drive is being added or replaced and plan for access, migration and backup accordingly.
Compatibility guidance establishes whether a part is supported; it does not establish a universal performance winner or a reliable FPS increase from a RAM or SSD upgrade. Any performance effect depends on the laptop, component and workload.

Follow the model-specific installation and warranty guidance
Read the exact service manual before opening the case. It should explain the access method, required tools and component-handling procedure. Do not treat a generic screwdriver or opening pick as mandatory; the required tool and method vary by laptop.
HP’s OMEN upgrade guide describes access to RAM and M.2 storage, instructs users to disconnect the battery before handling internal components, and points them to the device-specific service manual. Its statements about user-accessible upgrades and damage not being covered apply to the described OMEN models and US guidance. Check the warranty terms for your exact laptop and country rather than applying that guidance across brands or regions.
