The headline’s figures describe a U.S. market snapshot reported on March 20, 2025—not a current, across-the-board collapse in gaming. At that point, U.S. video-game hardware spending was reported to be about 11% lower year to date than in 2024. In a separate console comparison, PS5 unit sales were about 7% ahead of PS4’s pace after 52 months, while Xbox Series was 19% behind Xbox One at the same point. Those percentages compare each console family with its own predecessor, not PS5 sales directly with Xbox Series sales.
What the March 2025 report actually measured
HotHardware reported the figures on March 20, 2025, citing Circana data and analyst Mat Piscatella. The approximately 11% decline was in U.S. video-game hardware spending year to date versus the comparable period in 2024; it was a spending figure, not a reported decline in console units sold. The report does not establish the precise monthly release or underlying breakdown behind that year-to-date figure. Read HotHardware’s March 20, 2025 report.
The headline’s “fall off a cliff” wording is therefore best understood as emphasis on a short-term spending decline in that report, not a description of every gaming category or of the market today. Hardware spending in dollars, console unit sales, and total spending across games, accessories, and hardware are different measures.

The generation-on-generation figures use the same elapsed time—52 months—for each console family, but compare each current generation with that brand’s previous one:

These figures support saying that PlayStation was tracking better against its own prior generation than Xbox was against its own. They do not show that PS5 sold 7% more than Xbox Series, provide a direct market-share comparison, or explain why the two brands followed different trajectories. Does this mean gaming is still in decline?
No broad conclusion about the current market follows from the March 2025 hardware snapshot. Circana’s later 2026 forecast publication says total U.S. consumer spending on video-game hardware, content, and accessories reached $60.7 billion in 2025, up 1.4% over 2024. That combined-category total is not a measure of console hardware alone, and it cannot establish whether PS5 or Xbox Series unit sales rose or fell in 2025. What the figures do—and do not—say about the cause
The available reporting does not establish one cause for the early-2025 hardware-spending decline or for the difference between the brands’ generation comparisons. Circana’s 2024 outlook had forecast declining U.S. hardware revenue that year, attributing the expected decline to decreases in both average prices and units sold. That was a forecast for 2024, not a verified explanation of the later 2025 figures. Circana’s 2024 outlook.
It is reasonable to treat factors such as price, product mix, availability, and consumer demand as possible influences on hardware spending or sales, but the cited figures do not isolate their effects. They also do not include a verified explanation from Sony or Microsoft for the reported results. Any claim assigning a specific cause to one company’s performance would go beyond what these sources establish.

How to read future console-sales comparisons
For a fair comparison, first check that both figures use the same geography and time window, then confirm whether they describe dollars spent or units sold. A year-to-date spending change cannot be substituted for a monthly unit-sales change. When comparing generations, check that each is measured at the same number of months after launch; when comparing brands, make sure the source actually provides a direct PlayStation-versus-Xbox measure. The March 2025 report offers a historical U.S. snapshot and generation-versus-predecessor comparisons, not a current sales ranking.
