Back 4 Blood is the strongest pick if you want a first-person co-op shooter from the creators of Left 4 Dead. Choose Killing Floor 2 for repeatable wave survival, or Warhammer 40,000: Darktide if you want a more teamwork-intensive mix of shooting and melee. These games share co-op pressure with World War Z: Aftermath, but they do not all recreate its third-person camera, zombie swarms, or mission structure.
How to choose a game like World War Z
World War Z: Aftermath is a four-player cooperative third-person shooter, and its official site highlights cross-play and Horde Mode XL on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its defining appeal is the combination of third-person shooting and large zombie swarms. The official game page

Best alternatives to World War Z
Back 4 Blood: the closest first-person co-op fit
Back 4 Blood is officially described as a cooperative first-person shooter from the creators of Left 4 Dead. That makes it the clearest recommendation here if your group wants co-op FPS action associated with that lineage, rather than a third-person match for World War Z. The official site lists PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series consoles, and Windows/PC storefronts. Check the official Back 4 Blood page for its platform listings.
#1 Best Overall
Killing Floor 2: the wave-survival choice
Killing Floor 2 explicitly supports co-op and solo play against successive waves of AI-controlled Zeds. Pick it when the appeal is holding out through enemy waves and repeating survival sessions—not when you specifically want an alternative campaign structure. Its official overview identifies Steam Workshop support as PC-only. See the Killing Floor 2 official overview.
Darktide: for teams that want combat built around cooperation
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is a sci-fi horde shooter, not a zombie game. Its Steam description emphasizes balancing ranged and melee combat and staying close to teammates: players can rescue captured allies, and proximity affects toughness recovery. Fatshark’s official Steam description says, “Darktide is a co-op game.” The practical distinction is that teamwork is part of its combat design, not just a way to share a battlefield. Read Darktide’s Steam description and feature listing.

Left 4 Dead 2: a classic worth checking directly
Left 4 Dead 2 is a familiar reference point for co-op zombie campaigns, but the available Steam listing extract did not provide game details. Use its current Steam page to verify the features and platform information relevant to your group rather than assuming they are established here. View Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam.
Zombie Army 4: an adjacent option to verify
Zombie Army 4: Dead War is another named zombie-shooter option, but its Steam URL reached an age-check page. That does not establish its player count, modes, platform range, or current availability. Check the store listing for your region and platform before treating it as a fit. Check Zombie Army 4: Dead War on Steam.

Check platforms and modes before you buy
World War Z: Aftermath’s purchase page lists Steam, Epic Games Store, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Its official game page describes Horde Mode XL as a feature for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, so do not assume every listed platform has that mode. Check World War Z’s official purchase page and confirm the edition, mode, and store listing for each player’s system. Availability can differ by platform and edition.
For the other games, check each official or store page for the exact system and edition your group uses. The platform lists cited here do not establish that every title supports cross-play; confirm cross-platform multiplayer directly before buying if your group plays across different systems.
