If you like UFO 50 for its grab-bag of compact, retro-styled games, the closest alternatives depend on what you want more of: a broad library of playable classics, or the history behind a particular game. Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is the stronger pick for a large, history-led catalogue; The Making of Karateka is for a focused look at how one influential game was made. Neither recreates UFO 50’s fictional shelf of newly designed games.
What makes UFO 50 distinctive?
UFO 50 brings together 50 single- and multiplayer games spanning genres such as platformers, shoot ’em ups, puzzle games, roguelites, and RPGs. Its games use an 8-bit-inspired visual style alongside modern design, and share a 32-color palette. The official UFO 50 site presents them as the fictional catalogue of an obscure 1980s developer, drawing on the feel of browsing a multicart or a friend’s game library. Steam’s listing likewise describes a collection of 50 games.
That premise is the key to choosing an alternative. UFO 50 is a set of newly designed games pretending to belong to a lost era. A historical collection, by contrast, preserves actual games and material from a real company or period. Both can reward browsing, but they offer different kinds of discovery.

| The Making of Karateka | Understanding how one game was created and influenced game history | A playable documentary with design documents, playable prototypes, and newly produced video features, as described by Atari. | It concentrates on one game’s development instead of offering an anthology of many games. |
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration — for a real games-history library
Atari 50 is the better match if your favorite part of UFO 50 is having a large collection to browse, but you would rather play actual historical releases and learn about their context. Atari describes it as an interactive journey through the company’s history, with more than 100 playable classics and six new titles. The experience also includes video interviews with early Atari designers, engineers, and other games-industry figures.

The Making of Karateka — for development history, not a short-game anthology
If what interests you is the creative process behind an older game, The Making of Karateka offers a more focused alternative. Atari describes it as a playable documentary about the creation and influence of Karateka, with design documents, playable prototypes, and newly produced video features.
