The best game like State of Decay 2 depends on what you want to keep: choose Project Zomboid for deeper survival systems, or 7 Days to Die for crafting, fortification, and co-op defense. Neither is a full substitute: each shifts the focus away from State of Decay 2’s mix of survivor-community management, scavenging, and base development.

What makes State of Decay 2 distinctive?

Undead Labs describes State of Decay 2 as a survival game about gathering survivors, scavenging, building a community, fortifying shelters, and making choices about the group’s future. Its appeal is that these elements work together: the player is not only fighting zombies, but also sustaining a community and improving its home.

The game supports solo and co-op play. The Xbox listing for Juggernaut Edition describes cross-platform multiplayer with up to three friends and facilities such as a garden, infirmary, workshop, and watch tower. Those are useful comparison points when deciding which part you want from another zombie survival game.

Zombie Chickens - Fun Family Card Games for Adults, Teens & Kids - Survival Zombie Game, 3 Ways to Play: Competitive, Cooperative & Solo (1-4 Players)
  • FUN & EXCITING GAMEPLAY - Build defenses during the day to prepare for zombie chicken attacks at night! Gameplay flows between day & night cycles that will keep players on the edge of their seat!
  • GREAT FOR FAMILIES & FRIENDS OF ALL AGES - Zombie Chickens is the perfect card game for family game night, hanging out with friends, or playing solo in a round of zombie-fighting solitaire! 1-4 players, ages 9+, gameplay lasts around 35 minutes.
  • 3 WAYS TO PLAY! You can play Zombie Chickens as a COMPETITIVE, COOPERATIVE, or SOLO game! In the Competitive game, players battle to defend their farms from zombie attacks until the last player standing wins! In the Cooperative game, players band together to defend a single farm in hopes of surviving until a rescue party arrives! In the Solitaire game, 1 player battles hordes of zombie chickens to survive as many nights as possible!
  • SILLY YET STRATEGIC - Each zombie has 1 or more traits (flying, invisible, climbing, bulletproof, fireproof, timid, exploding) that you must overcome in order to defeat it. For example, a flamethrower is a great defense on your farm until a fireproof or invisible zombie comes along! So choose your defenses wisely and watch out for various events that can change the course of the game!
  • CAN YOU SURVIVE THE BOK-BOK-ALYPSE? Or will the zombie chickens prevail?

Pick it if the scavenging-and-surviving loop matters more to you than managing a community of survivors. Its sandbox approach offers room to shape a playthrough around survival choices, but the isometric viewpoint and hardcore emphasis make it a notably different experience from State of Decay 2’s third-person action and settlement loop. The Steam listing labels it Early Access; check that listing for its current development status.

7 Days to Die: best for crafting, base fortification, and co-op defense

The Fun Pimps describe 7 Days to Die as a combination of first-person shooting, survival horror, tower defense, and role-playing. Its features include crafting and repairing equipment, building defenses, and cooperating or competing with other players.

How to match an alternative to the part you enjoy

  • Community management: If choosing survivors and making decisions for a group is the main attraction, neither recommended alternative is a direct match; both move the emphasis toward other parts of the survival genre.
  • Survival depth: Start with Project Zomboid if you want looting, crafting, farming, fishing, and a customizable sandbox to drive the experience.
  • Base building and defense: Start with 7 Days to Die if gathering resources and defending a fortified home are the priority.
  • Co-op: Both games offer multiplayer, but their play styles differ. Check the current store listing for platform compatibility and the multiplayer details that matter to your group.
  • Action and viewpoint: If you specifically want immersive third-person combat, be aware that Project Zomboid is isometric and 7 Days to Die is first-person. Neither preserves that element of State of Decay 2.
