If you want a daily sports puzzle built around hidden word connections, start with NYT Connections: Sports Edition: its daily puzzle is free, and it uses the same rules as the original Connections. For a similar sports-focused game with past puzzles to replay, ConnectionsSports.com is an independent alternative—not a New York Times or The Athletic product.
How NYT Connections: Sports Edition works
The New York Times Help Center describes Connections: Sports Edition as the sports version of Connections, brought to solvers by The Athletic. The rules are the same: sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared connection. Categories can hinge on associations that are not immediately obvious, so the challenge is to identify the intended link rather than simply group words by sport or topic.
The daily puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s timezone. NYT says Connections is free to play without registration or sign-in; signing in lets progress carry across devices. Sports Edition is available on NYT Games web pages, The Athletic’s website and app, and the NYT News app. The official game has no archive, according to the NYT Help Center.

Choose NYT Sports Edition for the official daily puzzle
Choose the NYT version if you want the sports edition of the familiar Connections game through NYT or The Athletic. The daily puzzle is free; a Games subscription is relevant to the broader games catalog, archive offerings, and tools, rather than being the only way to access this daily puzzle. Subscription terms can change, so check the NYT Games subscription page for current details.
Try ConnectionsSports.com if replay and hints matter
The independent site describes a similar daily format and also offers hints, a leaderboard, custom puzzles, difficulty bands, and replay of past puzzles without charge. Those features make it the closer fit if you want to revisit earlier boards or get help during a puzzle. Because it is independent, its availability and features are governed by that site’s own service, not NYT or The Athletic.

Why sports Connections puzzles can feel tricky
Sports knowledge helps, but the board is still a word-association puzzle: a category may connect names, terms, teams, or other sports-related words in a way that is easy to overlook. In an interview, NYT Connections editor Wyna Liu described building boards through “a lot of free association, a lot of Google.” She also discussed using a notebook and Google Sheets and iteratively developing and combining possible categories.
