If you want more of Fallen London’s authored writing and consequential choices, start with Sunless Sea for exploration in the same world, Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition for a spacefaring locomotive adventure, or Mask of the Rose for romance, relationships, and mystery. They share Failbetter Games’ setting, but each puts a different kind of play between its story scenes.

What makes a game feel like Fallen London?

Failbetter Games describes Fallen London as a free, browser-based text adventure and literary RPG. Its stories evolve through choices, support bite-sized play sessions, and let players pursue different stories and ambitions. The company captures its tone as “a dark and hilarious Victorian-Gothic underworld, where every choice has a consequence, from the style of your hat to the price of your soul.”

That points to a more useful way to choose a follow-up than searching for another dark fantasy game: look for substantial authored writing, decisions that shape a character or relationships, and a setting worth uncovering. Then consider how much active travel, combat, or survival gameplay you want alongside the prose.

Which Fallen London-like game should you choose?

Game Best fit How it differs from Fallen London
Sunless Sea Exploration and discovery in the same universe An exploration game in the Fallen London setting, with officers whose stories can be uncovered. Zubmariner is an expansion.
Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition Travel, exploration, and a strange Victorian setting among the stars You captain a spacefaring locomotive; the game includes narrative choices, combat, equipment upgrades, and captain lineage or reloading after death.
Mask of the Rose Romance, relationship choices, and a murder mystery A visual novel focused on matchmaking, relationships, storycrafting, and an investigation rather than Fallen London’s browser-game format.

Sunless Sea: choose it for exploration in the same world

Sunless Sea is the most direct choice if you want to stay in Fallen London’s universe but make discovery and exploration a bigger part of play. Failbetter describes it as an exploration game set in that world, with stories to uncover through your officers.

Pick it when you want the setting and writing to accompany a journey, rather than remain the whole activity. The official description establishes its broad focus, but does not provide a detailed comparison of difficulty or pacing with Fallen London, so it is not possible to promise that it involves less grinding.

Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition: choose it for locomotive travel and combat

Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition recasts the strange Victorian setting as a journey among the stars aboard a spacefaring locomotive. Its official Nintendo listing describes narrative choices alongside combat and equipment upgrades, and says a captain’s lineage can continue or players can reload after death. Steam classifies it as a single-player RPG and lists its release date as January 31, 2019.

Mask of the Rose: choose it for relationships and mystery

How to make the choice

  • Want a locomotive adventure with combat and upgrades? Choose Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition.
  • Want romance, relationship choices, and a murder mystery? Choose Mask of the Rose.

All three are the closest verified same-universe options here, not an exhaustive list of every game that might appeal to a Fallen London player. The right match depends on whether you want exploration, a locomotive adventure, or a visual novel; the available descriptions do not establish which has the least grinding.
