If you want another RPG with a memorable party, meaningful choices, and tactical combat, start with Pillars of Eternity for a classic-inspired fantasy adventure or Tyranny for choices and real-time-with-pause battles. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous offers a broader campaign with a crusade strategy layer, while Baldur’s Gate 3 is a strong option if companion relationships and role-playing freedom matter most.

None is a direct replacement for Dragon Age: Origins. Pick by the part you want back: party dynamics and writing, combat style, story choices, or a large campaign.

Which parts of Dragon Age: Origins do you want again?

“Party dynamics” and “party writing” can mean different things: companions who matter to the story, a party you direct in combat, or decisions that reshape the campaign. These games overlap with Dragon Age: Origins in different ways, but each has its own world, tone, and rules.

Pillars of Eternity: best for a classic-inspired fantasy party RPG

Pillars of Eternity is the closest fit here if you want an expansive fantasy adventure built around a central hero, companions, exploration, and a party-focused role-playing system. Obsidian describes its rules as custom and tabletop-inspired, and lists eleven classes. The game aims to recapture the appeal of classic RPGs, but its world and companion relationships are its own—not a recreation of Origins.

Tyranny: best for choices and real-time-with-pause tactics

Tyranny is a good match if your favorite part of Origins was making consequential decisions while directing a party in combat. Publisher Paradox describes choices that can alter the world, memorable companions, and tactical real-time-with-pause combat. Its premise and tone differ from Origins, so choose it for those shared mechanics and decision-making rather than expecting the same kind of fantasy story.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous: best for a large campaign with added strategy

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous combines a party adventure with a crusade system. Owlcat describes recruiting troops and leaders, then managing crusade battles in a separate tactical mode. That extra layer adds strategic scope beyond the adventuring party; if you mainly want companion-focused storytelling, a game without a campaign-management system may suit you better.

How to choose based on party dynamics and party writing

  1. Decide what “party writing” means to you. If you want memorable companions as part of a classic-inspired fantasy campaign, begin with Pillars of Eternity. If you want the companion-and-choice combination GamesRadar highlights, consider Baldur’s Gate 3.
  2. Choose a combat style you will enjoy. For tactical real-time-with-pause combat, Tyranny is the clearest fit in this list. The cited material does not support a full combat-format comparison across all four games.
  3. Consider how much strategy outside the party you want. Choose Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous if a crusade system sounds appealing; look to the other picks if you want the party adventure to be the main focus.
  4. Do not treat shared features as identical experiences. These recommendations share selected RPG qualities, not Origins’ exact tone, combat feel, or companion writing.
