The AWS outage on October 19–20, 2025, was linked in contemporary reporting to problems users experienced with games and consumer services including Fortnite and Roblox. PlayStation Network is a less certain case: some players reported hiccups, but Sony’s status page did not show a broad outage. AWS traced the disruption to a DNS-management failure affecting its US-EAST-1 region, while the precise impact and recovery time varied by service.
Which games and services were affected by the AWS outage?
The clearest named game examples in reporting about the October 2025 incident are Fortnite and Roblox. The Associated Press also reported user problems with Snapchat, Robinhood, the McDonald’s app, Netflix, Disney+, and other services. Coinbase and Signal said they had trouble related to the outage. These are reports of user or company impact—not an AWS-confirmed list of customers.
Contemporaneous gaming coverage described other individual game disruptions, but AWS did not publish a complete roster of third-party games affected. Reports also do not establish consistent service-specific outage windows. Treat additional game names as reported cases, not a definitive or exhaustive list.
Fortnite
The Associated Press named Fortnite among the services for which users reported trouble during the outage. That establishes reported user impact, but not a precise Fortnite outage duration or a particular AWS dependency as the cause of every player’s problem.

Roblox
The Associated Press likewise reported user trouble with Roblox. Its current status is a separate question: Roblox’s status page listed systems as operational when accessed on October 8, 2026, and showed a resolved site issue dated October 5, 2026. A live status page does not establish what happened during the 2025 AWS event. Check Roblox status.
PlayStation Network
Some players reported PSN hiccups, but reports do not support saying that PlayStation Network suffered a confirmed platform-wide AWS outage. Push Square said PSN remained relatively sturdy and noted that its tracker was not flagging problems; PlayStation LifeStyle also reported that Sony’s status website showed services in green. Push Square’s report and PlayStation LifeStyle’s report describe limited or conflicting indications rather than a confirmed broad outage.

Other reported services
AP’s coverage named Snapchat, Robinhood, the McDonald’s app, Netflix, Disney+, and Canvas among services affected or reported as having trouble. It also described disruptions to Amazon services. Because these reports describe different kinds of impact, they should not be read as proof that every named service went fully offline.

AWS says the incident began at 11:48 PM PDT on October 19, 2025, and ended at 2:20 PM PDT on October 20. Its technical origin was the US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia, where DynamoDB experienced elevated API error rates and new connections could not be established.

In its post-event account, AWS attributed the initiating failure to a latent race condition in automated DNS management. An older DNS plan overwrote a newer plan, and cleanup then removed IP addresses for the regional DynamoDB endpoint. Later automated updates could not repair the inconsistent state; AWS operators had to intervene manually. AWS’s post-event report explains the cause and sequence.
The incident’s effects spread through AWS services that depended on DynamoDB and through systems involved in recovery. AWS documented impacts involving EC2 new instance launches and networking, Network Load Balancer health checks, Lambda, SQS, ECS, EKS, Fargate, Amazon Connect, STS, console sign-in, Redshift, and other services. Existing EC2 instances launched before the event remained healthy, according to AWS; new launches and dependent features experienced separate failures and recovery timelines. The event therefore was not a simultaneous outage of every AWS service or every customer application.

How large was the disruption?
The Associated Press reported that Downdetector recorded over 11 million user reports of problems at more than 2,500 companies. Those are reports, not a count of unique people affected or independently verified outages. AP also reported AWS’s figure of 64 affected internal AWS services; that is not a count of impacted games or third-party companies.

Is Fortnite or Roblox down now?
Historical impact during October 2025 and a service’s current condition are different questions. Epic Games’ status page listed Fortnite and related services as operational when accessed on October 8, 2026. Roblox’s page also listed systems as operational at that time, while showing the resolved October 5, 2026 site issue. These are time-specific snapshots, not guarantees of uninterrupted service. Check Epic Games status and check Roblox status, paying attention to the latest update time.

How to check whether AWS is causing a problem
A game or app problem does not by itself prove AWS is the cause. Check the service provider’s status page first, then compare its updates with AWS’s public Health Dashboard. AWS says the dashboard reports public service events, affected regions, severity, recent timelines, and other affected AWS services; service history covers interruptions in the preceding 12 months. Account-specific events require signing in. AWS Health Dashboard documentation explains the available views.
Quick Recap
- Look for the affected service and region, not just a general AWS incident headline.
- Check whether the app or game provider has posted its own incident notice and when it was updated.
- Distinguish a full outage from degraded performance or isolated user reports.
- If official pages show no active incident, the problem may have another cause; avoid assuming that a historical AWS event explains a current issue.
