Death and Taxes puts you behind a desk as the Grim Reaper, deciding who lives and who dies while office routine and a boss sit on top of the cosmic stakes. That makes it a fitting lens for thinking about saying no to authority. The store listings, however, describe the premise and features; they do not show that the game lets you refuse orders in any meaningful way. So the “simulation” is a reading of the game, not a documented mechanic.
This assessment rests on the developer’s store descriptions, platform listings, and publicly reported facts about the game. It is not based on hands-on play.
What you actually do in the game
Placeholder Gameworks describes Death and Taxes as a short, narrative-based game. You play the Grim Reaper doing office work, and your core job is to decide which people live or die. Your choices are said to affect the wider world around you.

#1 Best Overall
- HILARIOUS WOULD-YOU-RATHER ADULT GAME: Would you rather lose all of your teeth or get a felony on your record? This hilarious adult game will challenge you to pick the least horrible scenario as you compete with friends. Comes with 300 disturbingly horrible scenarios meaning you'll be able to play again and again.
- EASY TO PLAY: Pick up and play in just 1 minute. Super easy to understand rules means you'll be crying and laughing with these awkward and (potentially) inappropriate scenarios in no time.
- FUNNY CONVERSATION STARTER: Some of these scenarios are surprisingly deep while others are just plain weird or gross. Build intimacy and a lot of laughs with whatever friend groups you choose to play with!
- A TWISTED GAME: This is an adult game that is not afraid of taking it too far. Don't play I Choose Death if you're afraid to contemplate some truly horrible realities. The ideal party game, we suggest playing with those 18 and over.
- GREAT FOR PARTIES AND GIFTS: The perfect would-you-rather adult card game for birthdays, parties, holidays, Halloween, White Elephant, Secret Santa, and as a unique gift! The glow-in-the-dark tombstone box and included glow-in-the-dark sticker add a unique aspect to this gift.
- Filing paperwork
- Collecting pay
- Decorating your desk
- Buying items
- Talking to your boss
That last item is the one the thesis depends on. It places a boss inside the daily routine, not just in the background.
Where the “saying no to your boss” reading holds up
The strongest case for the title is the contrast the game sets up. A bureaucratic routine of forms, pay, and desk upkeep is attached to a decision that ends lives. Authority in that setting can feel absurd, stressful, or heavy, depending on how the game frames each exchange. A player who finds the boss’s demands unreasonable is being invited to notice that, and the premise makes the friction between duty and judgment the point.
As a critical lens, that works. The game gives you a recognisable workplace hierarchy and asks you to operate inside it, which is closer to the feeling of saying no than most games manage.

Three claims go beyond what the evidence supports.
- Refusal mechanics are not documented. The listings do not state whether you can meaningfully refuse an order, or what a refusal would cost you. Describing the game as a simulation of refusal implies a system the listings do not describe.
- No evidence of training value. Nothing in the developer’s material suggests the game is designed to build workplace assertiveness, and nothing establishes that it changes real behaviour.
- Hierarchy is not the same as choice. Having a boss in the scene shows the setting, not the outcome of disagreeing with that boss.
The fair version of the title is this: Death and Taxes is a good way to explore the feeling of authority and compliance, through an office frame. Whether it simulates refusal in a mechanical sense needs playtesting that this assessment does not claim to have done.

Choices and branching endings
The developer advertises meaningful choices, dialogue options, and branching endings. Those are the features that would carry any refusal fantasy, because a game can only feel like it honours saying no if the story actually branches on your answers.
The listings do not establish how deep those branches go, how many endings there are, or how different the outcomes feel. If you are judging the game on this point, look for the following when you play:
- Whether a dialogue option you pick in one scene changes a later scene, not just the immediate reply.
- Whether the boss’s reactions change across repeated disagreements.
- Whether the endings differ in tone and consequence, or only in wording.
Presentation and tone
The listed features are a watercolour art style, fully voiced non-player characters, an original soundtrack, a customisable Grim Reaper, and an upgrade shop. Taken together, they point to a game that wants its dark premise to sit beside a gentle, illustrated look.

Whether that combination works is a matter of taste. Watercolour can soften grim material, and full voice acting can make a bureaucratic exchange feel personal. Whether it lands for you depends on whether you find the contrast funny, uncomfortable, or both.

Content notes before you start
The developer’s mature-content note on Steam says the game deals with difficult topics and includes written mentions of death and suicide. Nintendo’s listing also shows ESRB content descriptors for drug reference, mild violence, sexual themes, and use of alcohol and tobacco. These notices are a caution, not a scene-by-scene guide.

Who the game suits
Death and Taxes is most likely to suit players who fit most of the following:
- You prefer narrative and choice-based play to action-heavy gameplay.
- You are comfortable with written references to death and suicide.
- You want to try a demo before buying. Steam and itch.io both list one.
- You are interested in office comedy with a dark edge.
If you want a game built around mechanical challenge, or you need firm assurance about how refusal works, the listings alone will not answer that.
Sales and dates
The developer reports that the game has sold more than 700,000 copies on PC. That figure is developer-reported, is not independently audited, and the developer page does not date it, so treat it as an approximate claim rather than a verified total.
