The standard Galaxy Z Fold8 is a major change from the Galaxy Z Fold5, not a straightforward replacement: it is 52 g lighter and reshapes the screen experience, but drops the Fold5’s S Pen support and 3x telephoto camera. There is also a naming wrinkle: Samsung describes the Fold8 Ultra as the continuation of the original Fold experience, while standard Fold8 introduces a new form factor. This comparison is about the standard Fold8 unless noted.
What changes most between the Fold5 and standard Fold8?
The headline change is not a larger inner screen: both phones are listed with a 7.6-inch main display. Instead, standard Fold8 changes the proportions, cover display, weight and some familiar Fold features. The figures below are from Samsung U.S. materials; screen sizes are measured diagonally, and visible area can vary with rounded corners and camera openings.
| Feature | Galaxy Z Fold5 | Galaxy Z Fold8 standard | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main display | 7.6 inches | 7.6 inches, 4:3 form | The diagonal is the same, but Fold8’s shape changes how content is arranged. |
| Cover display | 6.2 inches | 5.5 inches, 10:16 form | Fold8’s cover is smaller diagonally but wider in proportion. Try your usual typing and one-handed tasks on it if you can. |
| Weight | 253 g | 201 g | Fold8 is 52 g lighter by Samsung’s published figures. |
| Processor | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy | Fold8 lists a newer processor generation; these specifications alone do not quantify a speed increase. |
| Battery capacity | 4,400 mAh typical capacity | 4,800 mAh | The larger listed capacity does not establish longer real-world battery life. |
| Rear cameras | 50 MP wide, 12 MP ultra-wide, 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom | Dual 50 MP wide and ultra-wide; no telephoto camera listed for the standard model | Fold5 owners who use optical zoom should treat this as a potential loss. |
| S Pen | Supported on the main display with a compatible pen sold separately | Not supported | Handwritten notes and document markup with an S Pen are not carried over to standard Fold8. |
| FlexMode | Fold5 specifications list foldable productivity features | Samsung says FlexMode is not supported | Do not count on the familiar partially folded workflow on standard Fold8. |
Samsung’s September 9, 2026 engineering feature states that Fold8 weighs 201 g, 52 g less than Fold5, and describes a new form factor alongside changes to materials and internal architecture: Samsung Mobile Press engineering feature. The weight reduction is the clearest everyday-carry improvement in the published comparison; how much it matters will depend on how and how often you carry the phone.

Is the new screen shape an improvement for you?
The inner display
The matching 7.6-inch diagonal can make the two inner screens sound more alike than they are. Fold8’s listed 4:3 form changes the available shape for apps, reading and media. A diagonal measurement does not tell you whether your preferred apps will feel better on the newer screen, so consider the layout as well as the size.

The cover display
Fold8’s 5.5-inch cover display is smaller diagonally than Fold5’s 6.2-inch one, although its 10:16 form is wider in proportion. That could change how comfortable quick replies, browsing and one-handed use feel. Anyone who relies on the outside screen for most interactions should try it before upgrading if possible.
Samsung lists these display dimensions on its U.S. Fold8 product page and in its Fold5 U.S. business specification sheet. Regional variants and configurations may differ; check local specifications before buying.

What do you give up by moving to standard Fold8?
S Pen input
Fold5 supports a compatible S Pen on its main display, with the pen sold separately. Samsung explicitly says standard Fold8 does not support S Pen. If handwriting, sketching or annotating documents is part of your routine, this is a functional downgrade rather than a minor specification difference.

Optical zoom
Fold5 has a dedicated 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. Samsung’s standard Fold8 specifications list two rear cameras—a 50 MP wide and a 50 MP ultra-wide—and no telephoto. If you regularly frame distant subjects with optical zoom, do not assume the standard Fold8 preserves that option. Samsung lists a 10 MP 3x telephoto on Fold8 Ultra, but that is a different model.

FlexMode
Samsung says standard Fold8 does not support FlexMode. Fold5 owners who use the phone partly folded for supported apps should check whether their particular workflow depends on that feature before switching.
Do the processor and battery make Fold8 faster or longer-lasting?
Fold8 lists the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, compared with Fold5’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. That is a newer listed processor, but the specifications do not establish a particular real-world speed gain. No controlled Fold5-versus-Fold8 performance comparison is established here, so a benchmark or app-speed advantage should not be assumed.

The listed battery capacity rises from Fold5’s 4,400 mAh typical capacity to 4,800 mAh on Fold8. Capacity is not the same as tested endurance: it does not account for differences in displays, software, network conditions or usage. The figures alone cannot show how much longer either phone will last in everyday use.
Should you upgrade from Fold5 to Fold8?
Standard Fold8 is a stronger fit if you value
- A lighter foldable: Samsung lists Fold8 at 201 g and Fold5 at 253 g.
- A different inner-screen shape and a wider-proportioned cover-screen experience.
- A newer listed processor and larger nominal battery capacity, while recognizing that those specifications do not establish specific speed or runtime gains.
Keeping Fold5 may make more sense if you rely on
- S Pen input on the inner display.
- A dedicated 3x optical-zoom camera.
- FlexMode or an established partially folded workflow.
- The larger 6.2-inch cover display rather than Fold8’s 5.5-inch cover.
Before deciding, compare the actual cover-screen layout with your habits and check which lost features you use. If you want a Fold-style successor that retains the traditional direction of the lineup, Samsung positions Fold8 Ultra—not standard Fold8—as the continuation of what it previously called Galaxy Z Fold.

Availability and price considerations
Samsung announced sales beginning August 7, 2026, in select markets, with global expansion, through retail and carrier channels. The announcement is not a current price quote: what you pay depends on country, storage configuration, retailer or carrier, promotions and trade-in. Check the offer and local model details where you plan to buy. Samsung’s launch announcement also reported pre-orders more than 30% above the previous generation; that is Samsung’s company-reported early-demand figure, not an independent measure of sales.
