The charger puck matters as much as the watch. Samsung assigns EP-OR900 to the Galaxy Watch5 and Watch6 series, EP-OL300 to Watch7, Watch8, Watch8 Classic, Watch9 and Watch Ultra, and EP-OL715 to Watch Ultra2. An older puck may still make contact with a newer watch, but it may charge more slowly and run hotter. For the intended performance, use the puck matched to your generation and power it from a USB Power Delivery adapter rated at least 5V/2A.
Which Galaxy Watch charger should you use?
Identify the exact watch generation before buying a replacement puck. Samsung’s current Canada guidance separates the watches into charger families rather than treating every Galaxy Watch as interchangeable.

The model numbers identify Samsung’s charger designs, not a universal wattage rating for the watch. A puck’s maximum input capability should not be presented as the amount of power the watch actually receives.
Why an old puck can charge Watch7 or Watch Ultra slowly
Watch7 and Watch Ultra changed the physical relationship between the watch and the charging coil. In a Samsung Singapore FAQ updated July 13, 2024, Samsung explains that the new sensor design required a different back-glass shape. That change increased the distance between the internal wireless-charging coil and the charger, which “may result in slower charging and higher heat generation.”

This explains a common symptom: an older charger appears to work because the watch recognizes the charging connection, yet the rate is disappointing or the watch feels warmer. Electrical contact alone does not prove that the puck can deliver the newer generation’s intended charging experience. Samsung recommends the included Watch7-series charger, EP-OL300, for faster charging on Watch7 and Watch Ultra.
The same principle applies when checking a used or spare puck. If it was designed for an earlier rear sensor and back-glass arrangement, it may be acceptable for emergency charging but not equivalent to the charger assigned to the newer watch. Use EP-OL300 for the Watch7-family models listed above and EP-OL715 for Watch Ultra2.
What “faster” and “Fast Charging” actually tell you
Samsung uses tiered language rather than publishing one universal charging-time chart. The Canada support page calls Watch5 and Watch6 “faster” than standard charging, calls the listed Watch7-and-newer generations “faster” than standard charging, and identifies Ultra2 as supporting “Fast Charging.” Those labels describe the supported charging tier for the watch and puck combination; they are not a promise that every session will finish in the same number of minutes.

No official figure in the cited support pages gives an apples-to-apples wattage comparison, guaranteed percentage gain, or fixed full-charge time for each generation. Charging speed varies with the watch, puck, power adapter, usage and charging conditions. Avoid judging two setups from a single anecdotal time or from the maximum input number printed on an accessory.
For a fair comparison, keep the watch generation fixed, use the charger Samsung assigns to it, use a USB Power Delivery adapter that meets the minimum rating, and compare under similar conditions. Even then, Samsung’s wording supports a relative “faster” or “Fast” tier, not a guaranteed stopwatch result.
Power-adapter requirements
The puck is only one part of the charging system. Samsung Canada says wireless chargers for these watches require a USB Power Delivery adapter providing at least 5V/2A for optimal performance. A weak, unsuitable or otherwise inadequate supply can limit the charging result even when the puck is the correct model.

- Use a wall adapter that explicitly supports USB Power Delivery.
- Confirm that the adapter provides at least 5V/2A, as Samsung specifies.
- Do not treat the adapter’s maximum wattage as the watch’s charging wattage; the watch and charger negotiate and regulate the usable power.
- If a setup is slow, test the dedicated puck with a known-suitable USB PD adapter before blaming the watch.
Samsung lists recommended adapters on its Canada support pages, but no particular third-party adapter is required by the guidance here. The important checks are the USB PD capability and the 5V/2A minimum.

Wireless PowerShare lets a compatible Samsung phone provide power from its back to another device. It is not a universal substitute for a watch puck.
Samsung’s U.S. support page says Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra are not compatible with Wireless PowerShare. The same page lists Watch5 Pro, Watch5, Watch4, Watch4 Classic, the original Galaxy Watch, Watch3, Galaxy Watch Active and Active2 among compatible watches.

Samsung Canada’s newer guidance lists PowerShare support for Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch3, Active2 and Active models, and lists Watch7 and newer generations covered by that page as unsupported. The regional lists are not identical, so check the support guidance for your exact watch model and market. Do not advise a Watch7 or Watch Ultra owner to depend on a phone’s PowerShare feature.
PowerShare is also a contingency option rather than a speed benchmark. A phone must support the feature, have sufficient battery, and maintain the correct physical alignment. For routine charging, the model-matched puck remains the predictable option.
How to troubleshoot slow or interrupted charging
Work through the checks in order. Each step eliminates a different cause without assuming that the watch battery or puck is defective.

- Confirm the watch model. Check the model name in the watch’s settings or on its packaging, then match it to the charger table. A Watch7 or Watch Ultra should be tested with EP-OL300; Watch Ultra2 should be tested with EP-OL715; Watch5 and Watch6 should be tested with EP-OR900.
- Inspect the puck. Verify the model marking and look for a damaged cable, cracked housing or contamination on the charging surface. A puck that belongs to an older generation may charge a newer watch slowly even when no error appears.
- Verify the power source. Connect the puck to a USB Power Delivery adapter rated at least 5V/2A. Replace an underpowered or unsuitable supply for the test. Do not infer adequacy from the fact that another small device charges from the same adapter.
- Center the watch. Place the rear of the watch directly over the puck’s charging area. Small alignment errors can interrupt the connection or reduce the effective rate.
- Remove obstructions. Take off thick cases, metallic accessories or other attachments between the watch and charger. Samsung warns that accessories and unsuitable power sources can interfere with charging.
- Control the charging conditions. Stop intensive use while testing and move the watch and puck to a normal, ventilated location. Heat can accompany the slower behavior, particularly when an older design is used with Watch7 or Watch Ultra.
- Retest with the matched combination. Use the correct puck and suitable adapter long enough to see whether charging remains stable. If the problem persists, follow Samsung’s support guidance or contact an authorized service center.
This sequence distinguishes a compatibility limitation from a supply, alignment or environmental problem. If the watch charges normally with its assigned puck and adapter, the original slow setup was not a reliable speed comparison.

For Watch5 or Watch6
Look for Samsung model EP-OR900. Samsung places these generations in its faster-than-standard charging tier. An older standard charger may still be physically compatible in some situations, but EP-OR900 is the documented match for the faster experience.
For Watch7, Watch8, Watch8 Classic, Watch9 or Watch Ultra
Choose EP-OL300. The redesigned rear hardware is the reason Samsung recommends this puck. Buying an older puck solely because it fits can trade away charging speed and increase heat.
For Watch Ultra2
Use the dedicated EP-OL715 charger identified by Samsung. Do not assume that EP-OL300 or an earlier Ultra puck is the intended match simply because the watch can sit on it.
For older generations
Watch4, Watch3, Watch Active2 and Watch Active are described as standard-wireless-charging models, but Samsung’s compatible-charger guidance varies by model. Confirm the precise watch variant before purchasing; the family name alone is not enough to identify the correct accessory.
Common mistakes that create misleading speed comparisons
- Comparing different generations: A Watch6 and Watch7 do not share the same recommended puck, so a time comparison can measure hardware compatibility rather than an inherent watch-speed difference.
- Using the puck’s input rating as watch output: The accessory’s electrical maximum is not a published watch charging wattage.
- Testing with an unknown adapter: A correct puck connected to an adapter below Samsung’s USB PD and 5V/2A guidance can appear faulty.
- Ignoring heat and alignment: A case, metal accessory, poor centering or warm environment can slow or interrupt charging.
- Assuming PowerShare works across the range: Samsung specifically excludes Watch7 and Watch Ultra and lists newer exclusions on its Canada page.
- Expecting a guaranteed number of minutes: Samsung’s cited pages do not provide a universal time table. Treat “faster” and “Fast Charging” as supported tiers, not fixed completion promises.
What to check before you buy
- Write down the exact watch generation and, for Ultra models, whether it is Ultra or Ultra2.
- Match that model to EP-OR900, EP-OL300, EP-OL715 or the model-specific older guidance.
- Confirm the wall adapter supports USB Power Delivery and at least 5V/2A.
- Check the seller’s model number rather than relying on a generic “Galaxy Watch charger” description.
- For a used accessory, inspect the cable and puck and ask which generation it was supplied with.
- If you need phone-based emergency charging, verify PowerShare support for your exact model and region first.
The practical answer is therefore straightforward: match the puck to the watch generation, meet Samsung’s adapter requirement, and treat phone sharing as model-dependent. When Watch7 or Watch Ultra charges slowly on an older puck, the behavior is consistent with Samsung’s documented coil-distance change rather than proof that every component is defective.
