The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is a worthwhile pick for Samsung-phone owners who want a large, rugged Wear OS watch with trail guidance or recreational dive features. It is a less convincing upgrade for current Ultra owners, or for anyone expecting dependable multi-day battery life: Samsung has upgraded the internals and slimmed the case, but independent reviewers reported notably different runtimes. At $699.99 in the US before trade-in, it makes most sense when its outdoor tools and Samsung-linked health features match your needs.
What’s new in the Galaxy Watch Ultra2?
The Ultra2 keeps the 47 mm rugged-watch format, but Samsung says it has a 12% thinner case, an 800 mAh battery with 35% more capacity than the previous Ultra, and a display rated at up to 5,000 nits. It also moves to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite platform. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. The larger point for buyers is that this is an internal and ergonomic revision, not a smaller or fundamentally different Ultra.

Samsung describes the Marine band as 26% lighter. That is Samsung’s stated figure; another published account gave a slightly different number, so treat the precise band-weight comparison as manufacturer-specific rather than a universal measurement.
How much does it cost?
Samsung’s US product page listed the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 from $699.99 before trade-in when accessed October 7, 2026. That is a US price snapshot; regional pricing, promotions and availability vary. TechRadar listed launch prices of $699.99 in the US, £649 in the UK and AU$1,299 in Australia, and reported a $50/£50 increase over the original Ultra’s US and UK launch prices. Those launch figures are not live quotes.

At this price, consider whether you will use its rugged design, trail features or diving tools. If you mainly want notifications, everyday fitness tracking and casual workouts, TechRadar considers the smaller, less expensive Galaxy Watch9 a better value. For runners prioritizing sports-specific features, it points to the Garmin Forerunner 970 as an alternative.
Does the battery last longer in practice?
Battery life is the biggest reason not to treat Samsung’s capacity increase as a guarantee of longer days between charges. Samsung rates the Ultra2 for up to 60 hours with always-on display, but reviewer experiences varied substantially.
| Source | Reported experience | Context |
|---|---|---|
| TechRadar, Matt Evans | 60 hours | Five days and four nights of use; always-on display enabled. |
| Android Central, Nicholas Sutrich | Barely reached two days | His review also reported roughly two hours to charge from empty; the review describes his use, not a controlled comparison. |
Neither result should be promised to every owner. Always-on display, GPS workouts, sleep tracking and other settings affect runtime, and the reviews do not establish a single expected result across users. Samsung separately estimates up to 16 hours for route workouts using GPS/GPX in Exercise power-saving mode; that is a specific power-mode estimate, not a general GPS runtime claim.

TechRadar’s Matt Evans wore the watch for five days and four nights and found it more comfortable than its predecessor. He also reported that optical heart-rate readings sometimes began about 20 bpm below an Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Polar H10 before coming closer after approximately 15 minutes. That is one reviewer’s comparison, not a validation of medical accuracy or a guarantee for other wrists.

In a body-composition comparison, Evans initially found the watch’s result far from an industrial scale result; after changing hydration and measurement technique, the result moved closer. Treat that as an example of how readings can vary with conditions, not proof that the feature is a substitute for clinical measurement. TechRadar also noted it had not collected enough nights to assess features calibrated over seven-day averages.
What can it do for trail running and diving?
Trail running and routes
Samsung says Trail Run can show elevation, climbing progress, and cumulative ascent and descent. The watch supports loaded GPX routes with turn-by-turn guidance. Android Central praised trail navigation, app multitasking, gestures and Running Coach in its review. These features make the Ultra2 more relevant to outdoor runners than a general-purpose smartwatch, though they do not by themselves make it a specialist training watch.
Recreational diving
Samsung says the Ultra2 is EN13319 certified and rated 10 ATM and IP69K, and highlights advanced dive functions developed with Mares. The Mares app is required for those diving functions. Samsung’s fine print limits recreational scuba use to 40 m and says not to use the watch for dives below that depth. Water-resistance ratings and certification do not establish suitability for every dive profile or replace dive training and professional equipment.
Do its health features work with every phone?
Do not assume that buying the watch alone unlocks every health feature. Android Central reported that some of the best health features are limited to Samsung-phone owners, and criticized aspects of blood-pressure setup and food logging. If ECG, blood pressure or related functions are part of your buying decision, check Samsung’s current support details for your phone, region and feature before purchasing.

Samsung markets sleep-apnea risk detection as FDA-cleared. It is risk detection, not a diagnosis, and eligibility or regional availability may vary; verify the current requirements rather than assuming the feature is available to every buyer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy it or upgrade from the original Ultra?
Buy it if
- You use a Samsung phone and will benefit from the features tied to that ecosystem.
- You want a large, rugged smartwatch with built-in trail route guidance or the option to use Mares-assisted recreational dive functions within Samsung’s stated limits.
- You value the brighter display, larger-capacity battery and thinner case enough to pay a premium, while accepting that actual battery life depends on use.
Skip it or choose another watch if
- You want a smaller or less expensive watch for casual exercise; TechRadar’s value comparison favors the Galaxy Watch9 for that use.
- Your priority is specialist running features rather than a broad smartwatch experience; TechRadar identifies the Garmin Forerunner 970 as an alternative.
- You expect consistent battery life beyond two days, or charging speed is a major concern. Android Central’s review reported under two days for its use and around two hours for a full charge.
- You rely on health functions but do not have a compatible Samsung phone, or have not confirmed eligibility for your region.
For current Ultra owners
The Ultra2 is an iterative upgrade. Its thinner case and larger battery capacity may matter if you found the original uncomfortable or its endurance limiting, but the available review evidence does not show a universally longer battery experience. Upgrade when those changes or the newer platform solve a specific problem for you; otherwise, the evidence here does not make a compelling case to replace a working original Ultra solely for the new model.
Verdict
The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 improves the premium Ultra formula without changing its central trade-off: it is a large, expensive smartwatch whose strongest case is Samsung-phone integration plus outdoor capability. Trail runners and recreational divers should weigh its route and dive tools against their specific needs; everyday users may get better value from a standard Galaxy Watch, while dedicated runners may prefer a sports-focused model. Buy it for those distinct advantages, not on the assumption that battery life or health features will be identical for every owner.
