No: placing a coin between a Galaxy Watch and its charger is not a verified alignment fix. Samsung warns that metal or magnetic objects such as coins can reduce charging efficiency and may damage the watch or charger. Center the watch on a charger confirmed compatible with its exact model instead.
Why the coin trick is a bad idea
Samsung’s charging guidance does not recommend using a coin to position a watch. It specifically cautions against placing metal or magnetic materials between the watch and charger because they may reduce charging efficiency or damage either device. Keep the space between them clear. Samsung’s U.S. charging guidance covers the warning.
How to position a Galaxy Watch correctly
- Use the charger included with the watch, or another Samsung accessory confirmed compatible with that exact model.
- Place the back of the watch in the center of the charging surface. Samsung says the charger’s magnets should help position it.
- Make sure the watch can sit flat and maintain contact. If the band gets in the way, remove it while charging.
- Keep coins, magnetic cards, and other metal or magnetic objects away from the space between the watch and charger.

Check charger compatibility before trying an alternative
Galaxy Watch chargers are not universally interchangeable, and generic Qi-pad support should not be assumed. Samsung’s U.S. guidance distinguishes the flat charging dock used by Galaxy Watch Active through Watch8 generations from the different wireless charging dock used by the original Galaxy Watch, Gear S3, and Gear Sport. Samsung Canada also advises using the included accessory or another Samsung accessory confirmed for the model.

Wireless power sharing from a Galaxy phone is also model-dependent. Samsung’s U.S. list excludes Watch7, Watch Ultra, and Watch8 series; its Canada guide says Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 do not support the feature. Check current Samsung support for your exact watch model and region before relying on phone charging or buying an alternate accessory.
If the watch still will not charge
- Check for dirt, moisture, or other foreign material on the watch and charger; clean them as appropriate.
- Confirm the charging cable, power adapter, and outlet are connected and working.
- If the watch or charger becomes too hot, let it cool. Charging may slow or stop temporarily until the temperature falls.
- If the charger does not work at all, check warranty and support options or replace it with an accessory confirmed compatible with your model.
