Galaxy Watch batteries and disassembly steps vary by generation and case size, so identify your exact watch before buying a part or opening the case. Then choose between a model-matched DIY repair and professional service based on your tools, repair experience, and local service options.
Identify your exact Galaxy Watch before buying a battery
Check the watch’s model number and case size first. A battery that fits one Galaxy Watch may not fit another, and the repair steps are not interchangeable. Samsung’s Self Repair Services catalog lists multiple Galaxy Watch generations, but a catalog listing does not confirm that a battery is available for every model.
Repair guides are also model-specific: iFixit has separate battery procedures for the original Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch3, Galaxy Watch4, and Galaxy Watch5. Its original Galaxy Watch guide covers 42 mm and 46 mm variants. Use the model number and size to confirm that any replacement battery is explicitly listed for your watch; do not rely on a generic “Galaxy Watch” label.

Prepare safely before opening the watch
- Remove the watch from its charger and power it down. Do not begin disassembly while it is charging or switched on.
- Reduce the battery charge below 25%. iFixit recommends this precaution for its covered Galaxy Watch procedures. Its original Galaxy Watch battery guide explains: “For your safety, discharge your battery below 25% before disassembling your smartwatch. This reduces the risk of a dangerous thermal event if the battery is accidentally damaged during the repair.”
- Gather model-specific parts and tools. Check the repair guide for your exact generation before starting. The original Galaxy Watch guide lists a Tri-point Y00 screwdriver, an opening tool, a spudger, and a Phillips #00 screwdriver. The Galaxy Watch3 guide notes that replacement adhesive may be needed; other generations have their own parts and tool requirements.
If the battery is swollen, take appropriate precautions and do not improvise a handling or removal method. The cited repair guidance does not establish a complete swollen-battery procedure.
Follow the guide for your generation, not a generic teardown
Opening a smartwatch is a physical repair that can expose connected parts, and the component layout differs by model. For example, iFixit’s Galaxy Watch5 guide warns that the sensor flex cable remains connected as the back cover is opened. Do not pull the cover free as though it were already disconnected. That specific cable warning should not be assumed to describe every generation.

Use a battery guide written for your exact Galaxy Watch, follow its sequence and tool list, and take care not to strain connected components. Reassembly also matters: use the model-appropriate adhesive or sealing materials specified by the guide. The available procedures do not establish that a DIY repair will restore the watch’s original water resistance, so do not assume it is safe to expose a repaired watch to water.
What to verify before you commit
- Can you confirm the watch’s model number and case size?
- Does the replacement battery listing explicitly name that model?
- Do you have the small-device tools and model-specific adhesive or other materials required by its guide?
- Are you comfortable opening the watch without pulling on connected components and then reassembling it carefully?
- Can Samsung or another suitable repair provider currently service your exact model in your location, and what does the current quote include?
If you cannot verify the battery fit, do not have the required tools, or are uncomfortable with the physical repair, seek a service quote before proceeding.
