Neither phone is the better choice for everyone. Choose the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want S Pen support, DeX desktop-style use, Samsung’s built-in Privacy Display, or a 5x telephoto camera. Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you prefer iOS, want variable-aperture camera controls, or value the results it recorded in Tom’s Guide’s cited performance and battery tests. Those tests reflect that outlet’s methods, not every person’s use.

Tom’s Guide lists both phones at $1,299 starting price for 256GB models, but actual prices depend on region, storage, retailer and carrier terms. Compare like-for-like offers before buying.

Which camera is better for the way you shoot?

Choose the iPhone for aperture control

The iPhone 18 Pro Max’s variable-aperture main camera gives you a way to adjust aperture manually, a control Tom’s Guide highlights in its comparison. That is the more relevant distinction if you want to shape how the main camera handles light and depth rather than rely only on automatic processing. Tom’s Guide’s image-quality judgments are its observations, not a guarantee that every shot or photographer will prefer the iPhone.

Choose the Galaxy for greater telephoto reach

The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a dedicated 5x telephoto lens, compared with the iPhone’s 4x telephoto. That gives Samsung greater optical reach for distant subjects before you rely on digital zoom. If you more often photograph nearby scenes or prefer manual aperture adjustment, the iPhone’s camera controls may matter more. Neither difference alone establishes which phone takes better photos overall.

Which phone suits productivity and privacy?

Galaxy S26 Ultra: stylus input and DeX

Samsung lists S Pen and Samsung DeX support for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. A stylus can be useful for handwriting, annotation or precise input; DeX supports a desktop-style phone experience. These are reasons to favor Samsung if you expect to use those capabilities, not proof that they improve every workflow. Samsung describes the S26 Ultra as the first phone with a built-in Privacy Display, a feature to consider if screen visibility in public settings is a concern.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: Apple software and services

Apple announced iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Their value depends on whether you want Apple’s software and services and how you use them; Samsung promotes Galaxy AI for its own devices. If you already rely on an iPhone, Mac or Apple services—or on Galaxy and Android devices—compatibility with your existing setup may be a more practical deciding factor than a feature list.

Battery drain test 18 hours 27 minutes 16 hours 40 minutes

The iPhone scored higher in Tom’s Guide’s listed CPU, graphics and battery tests; the Galaxy posted the higher Geekbench AI 1.7 result. The AI figures use different runtime/backend labels, including TensorFlow Lite QNN for Samsung, so they should not be treated as a universal AI ranking. Battery-test duration is specific to Tom’s Guide’s protocol and does not establish how long either phone will last for your mix of screen time, connectivity and apps. Separately, Apple says eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max models deliver up to 45 hours of video playback under Apple’s test conditions. That manufacturer estimate is not a direct apples-to-apples result against the Galaxy.

What do the phones cost?

Tom’s Guide lists a $1,299 starting price for each phone in the 256GB configuration. That starting-price match does not guarantee equal checkout prices: storage, local taxes, promotions, carrier financing and trade-in terms can change what you pay. Before deciding, compare the same storage size and buying conditions, including whether each offer is unlocked or carrier-tied. Recheck current prices in your country because listings and deals change.

Which phone should you choose?

  • Pick the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you will use the S Pen or DeX, want Samsung’s built-in Privacy Display, or value the 5x telephoto lens’s extra optical reach.
  • Pick the iPhone 18 Pro Max if iOS and Apple services suit you better, variable aperture appeals to how you shoot, or you give weight to its outcomes in Tom’s Guide’s CPU, graphics and battery tests.
  • Compare your existing devices and services if you are otherwise split: the ecosystem that fits the products and apps you already use may matter more than a single benchmark or camera feature.
  • Check your actual total cost with matching storage, carrier status, trade-in and payment terms; the listed starting prices are only a baseline.
