How the U.S. price difference works
These are historical U.S. launch/MSRP references, not verified current retail prices. Samsung announced the Galaxy S24 at $799.99 with 128GB in 2024, while its effective July 2024 MSRP sheet lists the unlocked 256GB model at $859.99. Apple announced the iPhone 17 at $799 with 256GB in 2025.
| Reference | Storage | U.S. price |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S24 launch starting price (Samsung Newsroom U.S., 2024) | 128GB | $799.99 |
| Galaxy S24 MSRP (Samsung effective July 2024 sheet) | 256GB, unlocked | $859.99 |
| iPhone 17 launch starting price (Apple Newsroom, 2025) | 256GB | $799 |
The starting prices differ by only 99 cents, but they compare a 128GB S24 with a 256GB iPhone 17. At the cited 256GB references, the S24 MSRP is $60.99 higher. Current offers can differ with promotions, carrier financing, trade-ins, taxes, availability, and whether a phone is refurbished, so check local listings for the configuration and condition you intend to buy.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
Which display and design specifications stand out?
The iPhone 17’s listed display is 0.1 inch larger and has more pixels than the S24’s, while both manufacturers specify refresh rates up to 120Hz. These figures describe size, resolution, and refresh-rate capability; they do not establish which screen looks better in person.
The S24 is listed as 10g lighter and smaller in each stated dimension. That may matter if a lighter, more compact phone is a priority, but the specification figures alone do not determine how either device feels to hold.
Rank #2
- 6.7″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X, QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh and a peak brightness of ~2,600 nits — giving a noticeably sharper, brighter screen than the base S24.
What do the camera and video numbers tell you?
The S24 lists three rear cameras, including a dedicated 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. Apple lists a 48MP main and 48MP ultra-wide camera system, along with 2x optical-quality telephoto and up to 10x digital zoom. Digital zoom figures should not be read as equivalent to optical zoom.
For video, Samsung lists 8K recording at 30fps, while Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 60fps. Resolution and frame-rate maxima do not establish comparative image quality, stabilization, ease of use, or which format better suits a particular workflow.
Rank #3
- 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.
Which phone should you choose?
- Choose based on storage and price: The iPhone 17’s U.S. launch starting price includes 256GB, whereas Samsung’s S24 starting-price reference is for 128GB. Compare the same storage tier and current local offers rather than relying on the headline starting prices.
- Consider the S24 if its listed hardware fits your priorities: It is lighter on the cited specifications and lists a dedicated 3x optical-zoom camera.
- Consider the iPhone 17 if its listed display or camera configuration suits you: It has the larger, higher-resolution display in these specifications and two listed 48MP rear cameras.
- Factor in your existing ecosystem: The S24 runs Android and the iPhone 17 runs iOS. If you already use services, accessories, or devices in one ecosystem, continuity may be more useful to you than a difference in a single specification.
Check the exact Galaxy S24 variant before buying
Samsung publishes market-specific Galaxy S24 listings. Before purchase, confirm the exact model and regional configuration, including chipset, supported network bands, storage, and warranty. The product name alone is not enough to establish that every S24 sold in different regions has the same specifications or network compatibility.
Official specifications: Apple iPhone 17 technical specifications, Samsung Galaxy S24 Spain specifications, Samsung Galaxy S24 India specifications, and Samsung Galaxy S24 Germany specifications.
