If Always On Display (AOD) is contributing to your Galaxy’s battery drain, you can limit when it appears without turning it off completely. Open Settings, search for Always On Display, then choose Tap to show, Auto, or As scheduled under When to show. The available choices and menu path vary by model and software.
How to limit Always On Display
- Open Settings and search for Always On Display. On supported versions, you can instead go to Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display. If you do not see that path, use Settings search.
- Open When to show, then choose the mode that fits how you use your phone. Samsung documents these controls in its Galaxy AOD support guidance; options vary by model and software.
- To stop AOD use altogether, turn the feature off on that screen.
Which AOD mode should you choose?
| Mode | When information appears | Convenience and battery trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Always | The AOD remains visible continuously. | Most convenient for at-a-glance information; longer display time uses more battery, according to Samsung. |
| Tap to show | A tap on the screen briefly displays AOD. | Requires an extra tap, but avoids keeping the information visible continuously. |
| As scheduled | AOD appears during hours you select. | Useful when you want it at predictable times; it is not displayed outside the schedule. |
| Auto | On supported One UI 6.1 devices, Samsung says AOD appears continuously except when the phone detects a dark place or that it is in a purse or pocket. | Retains at-a-glance access in ordinary conditions while suppressing AOD in those detected situations. |
| Off | AOD does not appear. | Removes AOD display use, but also removes its at-a-glance information. |
Samsung’s specific descriptions of When to show options are associated with One UI 6.1 guidance. Your Galaxy may use different labels or offer fewer modes.
Why AOD can affect battery life—and what is not known
Samsung Ireland states: “Any setting that keeps the display on longer will use more battery.” That establishes the direction of the trade-off, not its size. The official sources cited here do not provide a reliable percentage of battery saved by changing AOD modes, so the result will depend on your device and use.
AOD is not necessarily the only reason a Galaxy battery drains quickly. Samsung also identifies initial setup optimization and weak cellular signal as possible contributors, and recommends checking battery use by app. A sudden or persistent drain deserves a broader check rather than assuming AOD is responsible.

If the AOD setting is unavailable
Check whether Power saving mode is enabled. Samsung says this mode makes AOD unavailable because it disables higher-power features. You can check the mode in your device’s battery or power settings; exact labels vary by model and software. Turning it off may restore AOD controls, but doing so also ends the broader restrictions that Power saving mode applies.

What to check if the battery still drains
- Review the battery usage graph and identify apps with unusually high use. Samsung’s Galaxy battery-drain guidance describes checking usage and limiting background activity.
- For apps you rarely use, consider adding them to sleeping or deep sleeping lists where your device provides those options. Check the effects on notifications and background updates before restricting an app you rely on.
- Consider whether the phone is in its initial setup period or has weak cellular signal, both of which Samsung lists as possible reasons for elevated use.
- If the drain remains unexplained after reviewing settings and app use, consult Samsung support or an authorized service provider for a device-specific battery check.
