G.SKILL’s Trident Z5 Royal Neo is an AMD EXPO DDR5 memory family, but its DDR5-8000 rating is an overclocked target—not a speed guaranteed on every Ryzen 9000 PC. The two documented 8000 MT/s kits also differ in capacity, timings and voltage, so check the exact model against your motherboard and CPU before buying.
What is Trident Z5 Royal Neo?
G.SKILL announced Trident Z5 Royal Neo on July 19, 2024, as an AMD AM5 memory family with AMD EXPO profiles. Its launch announcement highlighted a 32GB (2×16GB) kit rated up to DDR5-8000. G.SKILL said distribution partners would receive kits starting in August 2024. G.SKILL’s announcement positions the family for AMD platforms, but the “Neo” name and EXPO profile do not guarantee a particular speed on every system.
Do not confuse Royal Neo with the earlier Trident Z5 Royal announcement from May 24, 2024, which described the original Royal series and Intel XMP 3.0. The July announcement is the relevant one for Royal Neo’s AMD EXPO and AM5 positioning. Original Royal announcement
The design is part of the product’s appeal: G.SKILL describes a mirrored silver or gold finish and a crystalline RGB light bar. Its overview says compatible motherboard lighting software may control the light bar, with support varying by board. 48GB model overview

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Trident Z5 Royal Neo Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J2836F48GX2-TR5NS
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
What’s the difference between the 32GB CL38 and 48GB CL40 kits?
| Model | Capacity and DIMMs | Rated data rate and timings | Listed voltage | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F5-8000J3848H16GX2-TR5NG | 32GB (2×16GB) | Up to DDR5-8000, CL38-48-48-128 | 1.45V | AMD EXPO |
| F5-8000J4048G24GX2-TR5NS | 48GB (2×24GB) | Up to DDR5-8000, CL40-48-48-128 | 1.40V | AMD EXPO |
The 32GB kit has the lower listed first timing, while the 48GB kit provides more capacity. Neither specification alone establishes which kit will be faster in a given workload. Keep the model numbers straight: the two kits have different timings and listed voltages. The 32GB model page and 48GB model page identify the respective specifications.
Will DDR5-8000 work with Ryzen 9000?
It can work on a compatible, suitably configured platform, but it is not guaranteed. G.SKILL says a Ryzen 9000 desktop processor on a compatible platform can reach up to DDR5-8000 using the 1:2 clock-divider mode in BIOS. The model pages qualify the speed as an overclocked setting that requires BIOS adjustments; the maximum achievable rate depends on the processor, motherboard and other system components.

That makes DDR5-8000 a rated overclock profile, not an official default memory speed for Ryzen 9000. EXPO can provide a profile to configure, but the system still has to handle the resulting memory settings. Verify the exact kit, board and CPU combination rather than treating a general statement of DDR5 support as a speed guarantee.
Which motherboard supports this G.SKILL RAM?
Start with the exact memory model’s listing, not just the board’s general memory specifications. G.SKILL provides a RAM Configurator and a QVL for the 32GB CL38 kit. That QVL includes selected X870/X870E and B850/B840 motherboards; it applies to one memory kit and warns against mixing kits.

A QVL entry is more specific evidence than a board simply supporting DDR5, but it does not validate every CPU, BIOS version or multi-kit arrangement. Also check the motherboard maker’s own memory list and AMD’s Ryzen overclocked memory compatibility list, which AMD describes as identifying kits tested across systems to run at rated speed and latency and indicating EXPO or XMP status. The cited G.SKILL QVL is for the 32GB model; do not assume it establishes support for the separate 48GB model.
- Match the full kit model number to the board’s current memory list.
- Confirm the capacity and DIMM count the board supports for that configuration.
- Check the CPU and BIOS requirements in the board maker’s documentation.
- Use one matched kit; do not assume two kits will behave like one validated kit.
- Check physical clearance around the memory and CPU cooler, especially if selecting components around the modules’ design.
Is 8000 MT/s worth it on Zen 5?
Not automatically. Peak transfer rate is only one part of memory performance; timings, memory-controller behavior and the workload matter too. In its January 5, 2025 review, Tech4Gamers tested the 32GB CL38 model F5-8000J3848H16GX2-TR5NG with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, MSI MEG X870E GODLIKE motherboard and Windows 11 Pro Build 23H2. It compared default DDR5-8000 CL38 EXPO, tuned DDR5-8000 CL36 and tuned DDR5-6400 CL28. In that setup, DDR5-6400 CL28 led the review’s listed AIDA64 results, and DDR5-8000 used a 2:1 memory-controller ratio. Tech4Gamers’ test and results

This is evidence from one system, tuning approach and benchmark set—not a universal recommendation for Zen 5. The review does not establish that DDR5-6400 CL28 is faster in every application or that every processor can achieve that tuning. It also does not provide a cross-game Ryzen 9000 test showing a gaming uplift for DDR5-8000. Compare the target workload and validated settings rather than choosing on the “8000” number alone.

How to choose between the kits
- Choose capacity first: decide whether 32GB or 48GB better fits your workload and planned applications.
- Check the exact model: the 32GB option is CL38 at 1.45V; the 48GB option is CL40 at 1.40V. Do not substitute one model’s timings or voltage for the other’s.
- Validate the platform: check the kit’s QVL, the board maker’s list and AMD’s memory compatibility resource for your CPU and board.
- Decide what you value: maximum transfer rate, lower timings, capacity or the Royal Neo’s finish and lighting may matter differently depending on your use.
- Plan for tuning: rated DDR5-8000 operation requires BIOS changes and may not be achievable on every system.
