Future Soldier Vision (FSV) was a UK Ministry of Defence and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) concept unveiled in 2015. It showed how a British dismounted soldier might be equipped in the 2020s—not a promise that the pictured uniform or every prototype would become standard issue.
What was Future Soldier Vision?
FSV was an integrated-system demonstrator and a design aim point for future soldier equipment. Rather than presenting each item as a standalone upgrade, it explored how protection, sensing, communications, computing, power and data could work together on a dismounted soldier.
The phrase “British soldier of 2025” captured the concept’s intended horizon, but can make it sound like a uniform that the Army planned to issue by that date. Dstl Programme Manager Ross Jones described it instead as “an aim point for what the soldier could look like a decade from now” and a way to challenge what the future could be.
What equipment did the concept include?
The Ministry of Defence’s 2015 description grouped FSV’s proposed equipment into these connected elements:
#1 Best Overall
- Features 6 US army men and 6 Special Forces combat soldiers action figures. Each army guys model is about 3.75" tall.
- They have excellent quality and can perform various actions like sitting, standing, turning their heads, moving their arms, and legs, making them perfect for action-packed play sessions.
- Unique Weapons included with each soldier, There are 12 guns in total. In addition, each action figures has a distinctly defined look that reflects the character's position in the army.
- Not only do these army men action figures work great as standalone toys, but they also great for seting them up with military vehicles in all kinds of battle scenes. Loads of fun!
- Whether you're a collector of military memorabilia or a kid who loves to play with soldier toys, this army toys will provide hours of entertainment and fun.
| Element | Proposed features | Role in the system |
|---|---|---|
| Head subsystem | Hearing protection, lightweight sensors, information sharing and integrated power | Support sensing and communications at the head while linking them to the wider system |
| Torso armour | Segmented protection configurable for the user or situation, emergency quick release, flexible shoulder pads, and power and data connectors | Combine adaptable protection with interfaces for connected equipment |
| Wearable monitor | A smart-watch-style device recording biometric data | Collect information about the wearer |
| Smart glasses | A heads-up display, camera and bone-conduction headphones | Put visual information and audio within the soldier’s equipment system |
| Personal-role computer | A computer for information sharing and communications | Provide a soldier-level hub for exchanging information |
| Customisable weapon concept | A weapon concept able to share targeting information with soldiers and units | Connect weapon-related targeting information with the soldier and wider unit |
These were elements of a concept, not proof that all the devices were operational equipment or were issued together to troops.
Why did the UK pursue the concept?
FSV addressed a practical problem: soldiers were carrying capable equipment that had accumulated through separate upgrades, but did not necessarily function as one integrated system. Dstl’s 2015 technical summary said an evolutionary approach driven by urgent operational requirements had led UK soldiers to carry “as much as 58kg” of equipment that was “poorly integrated.” That figure is Dstl’s 2015 account of the burden, not a weight measurement of the FSV concept.

The same Dstl summary reported that, in 2015, Capability Directorate Combat judged the lack of soldier-system integration to be “the greatest risk to capability development for the dismounted soldier.” FSV therefore focused on how kit could share information and power while addressing weight, usability and protection—not simply on adding more advanced gadgets.
Who developed Future Soldier Vision?
Dstl developed the first phase with Kinneir Dufort, SEA Ltd and the British Army. A later Dstl case study names work with Qioptiq, the Royal College of Art, Revision, Source and SEA. The Royal College of Art supplied prototype combat clothing that was assessed at the Specialist Weapons School in Warminster for fit, movement and comfort.

Did British soldiers wear the FSV smart glasses and uniform?
The available official descriptions establish that FSV was a physical concept demonstrator built around current and emerging technology. They do not establish that every displayed component entered service as shown, or that British soldiers were issued the smart glasses as part of a standard FSV uniform.
The distinction is important: a prototype can help test integration ideas and define requirements without becoming a fielded system. The MOD and Dstl presented FSV as a platform for exploring what industry and academia could help make real, not as a delivery guarantee for 2025.

What happened after the 2015 concept?
FSV informed later work on clothing and human factors, as well as the Army’s broader Future Soldier modernisation. In 2024, Dstl reported trials under Future Integrated Dismounted Soldier Vision (FIDSV). Soldiers tested data visualisation, integrated sensors and live intelligence feeds, including alerts drawing on laser-warning systems, drone thermal detection and ground sensors that could transmit information to body-worn systems.

The programmes sit on a development path, with the later trials addressing connected information and sensing rather than confirming the original concept as standard kit.

Was the £160 billion figure the cost of FSV?
No. In a 2015 statement, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon referred to a £160 billion equipment plan while discussing the government’s commitment to equipping the Armed Forces. That was a contemporaneous figure for the MOD equipment plan, not the price or budget of Future Soldier Vision. The official material summarized here does not state a total FSV programme cost.
