The Fujitsu fi-7160 remains a capable-on-paper batch scanner for offices that need duplex document capture, but it is discontinued. Its manufacturer-rated speed is 60 pages per minute (simplex) or 120 images per minute (duplex), with an 80-sheet feeder. Those are specifications, not independently tested results. The fi-8170 is the manufacturer-described upgraded successor; a used fi-7160 may still fit a workflow if you can confirm its condition, software compatibility, and service options.
What is the Fujitsu fi-7160?
The fi-7160 is a desktop document scanner with an automatic document feeder (ADF) and duplex scanning. Ricoh/PFU marks it as discontinued and identifies the fi-8170 as its upgraded model. That makes the fi-7160 primarily a used or residual-stock purchase rather than a current model to assume is available new. Ricoh/PFU fi-7160 product page
This is a specifications-based review, not a hands-on test. The published speed, media limits, and features below come from manufacturer materials and do not establish real-world throughput, image quality, or reliability in a particular office.
fi-7160 specifications at a glance
| Specification | Manufacturer-stated value |
|---|---|
| Rated scan speed | 60 pages per minute (simplex) / 120 images per minute (duplex) |
| ADF capacity | 80 sheets |
| Optical resolution | 600 dpi |
| Maximum standard document size | 8.5 × 14 inches |
| Long-page scanning | Up to 220 inches |
| Paper weight | 27–413 g/m² |
| Plastic cards | Up to 1.4 mm thick |
| USB interface | Datasheet: USB 3.0 / 2.0 / 1.1; current product page: USB 3.2 |
Values are from the fi-7160 datasheet and product page. The datasheet also describes software output up to 1,200 dpi; that is not the scanner’s optical resolution. The differing USB wording comes from the two manufacturer sources, so check the precise interface on the unit or regional specification sheet if it matters to your setup.

How useful are its speed and paper-handling ratings?
Throughput for batch jobs
A rating of 60 ppm simplex and 120 ipm duplex makes the fi-7160’s intended use clear: scanning stacks of documents rather than occasional single pages. Duplex images per minute count both sides of a sheet; they are not the same measure as pages per minute. Actual job time also depends on the documents, chosen settings, computer, software, and workflow. The rated figures should not be treated as a guarantee of sustained office throughput.
Capacity and media range
The 80-sheet ADF can reduce the number of reloads in a batch, while the stated paper-weight range and support for plastic cards broaden the kinds of material it can handle. Standard documents are specified up to 8.5 × 14 inches, with long-page scanning up to 220 inches. These limits do not mean every mixed, damaged, or unusually sized stack will feed reliably; inspect the paper path and verify the scanner against the documents you actually process.

What software and operating systems does the fi-7160 support?
Do not assume compatibility from a broad label such as “Windows compatible.” PFU/Ricoh’s fi Series compatibility FAQ, updated August 28, 2026, provides OS-specific driver and application statuses and advises users to check that table for their exact setup. It says, “Windows on Arm processor is not supported.” The FAQ also recommends current application versions and says development for legacy applications has ended. Check the fi Series OS compatibility FAQ before buying or connecting the scanner to a changed operating system.
Ricoh/PFU lists TWAIN and ISIS driver connectivity and PaperStream software for the fi-7160. It also describes multi-feed detection and paper-protection features. These are manufacturer-described capabilities, not proof that every driver, application, or paper combination will work without errors. Confirm that the driver and capture software support your operating system and document-management workflow.

fi-7160 vs. fi-8170: what can buyers conclude?
Ricoh/PFU describes the fi-8170 as the fi-7160’s upgraded successor, but the cited material does not provide a complete current side-by-side specification comparison. It therefore does not establish which model is faster, more reliable, less expensive, or the better value. Compare the specifications and support status for the exact configurations available to you rather than inferring a performance advantage from the word “upgraded.”
| Decision factor | What the available manufacturer information establishes | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Throughput and feeder capacity | fi-7160: 60 ppm simplex / 120 ipm duplex; 80-sheet ADF. A comparable fi-8170 figure is not stated in the cited sources. | Compare each model’s official specifications against your batch size and scanning volume. |
| Document sizes and cards | fi-7160: standard documents up to 8.5 × 14 inches, long pages up to 220 inches, and cards up to 1.4 mm thick. Comparable fi-8170 limits are not stated in the cited sources. | Check limits for the exact model and the materials in your workflow. |
| Drivers and applications | The fi Series FAQ gives OS-specific compatibility information for the fi-7160. The cited sources do not provide a full comparison with the fi-8170. | Check the current OS table, drivers, capture application, and integrations you rely on. |
| Condition and support | The fi-7160 is discontinued. The US discontinued-products page includes it among scanners eligible for extended service coverage, subject to confirmation. | Check unit condition, warranty, return terms, regional service eligibility, and consumables for either model. |
Is a used fi-7160 still supported?
Discontinued does not automatically mean unsupported in every respect. Ricoh/PFU’s US discontinued-products page lists the fi-7160 among models eligible for extended service coverage, but that does not mean every unit, region, or service plan qualifies. Contact the regional support organization with the scanner’s specific details to confirm eligibility. Ricoh/PFU discontinued scanners and extended service

- Confirm software fit. Use the current compatibility FAQ to check your operating system, driver, and application; verify any document-management integration separately.
- Inspect the specific unit. Ask about its condition, included accessories, service history if available, and whether you can test feeding and duplex capture with representative documents.
- Read the seller’s terms. Check return conditions and any warranty in writing. Do not assume a used or residual-stock scanner is covered by a manufacturer service plan.
- Verify service eligibility. Contact regional Ricoh/PFU support with the unit’s details to ask whether extended coverage is available for that specific scanner.
- Check consumables and parts. Confirm that any cleaning or consumable kit is explicitly compatible with the fi-7160 and contains what you need.
- Compare the successor on evidence. Review official fi-8170 specifications and support information alongside the fi-7160; do not rely on a general successor label as a substitute for a workflow-specific comparison.
Verdict: who should consider the fi-7160?
The fi-7160 is worth considering when its documented batch-scanning capacity matches the job, its operating-system and application support are confirmed, and the particular unit can be inspected and purchased with acceptable terms. Its discontinued status and the need to validate used-unit condition and service make it a less straightforward choice than buying a currently supported scanner. The fi-8170 is the manufacturer-described upgrade, but the available cited specifications are not enough for a direct performance or value verdict.
