The Fujifilm X-H2 is a resolution-first APS-C hybrid camera: its 40.2MP sensor gives you room for detailed images and cropping, while internal 8K/30p recording makes it capable of high-resolution video work. Its slower sensor readout is the key compromise. For fast action and quick pans, the stacked-sensor X-H2S is a stronger fit; for similar resolution in a smaller body, consider the X-T5.
What the Fujifilm X-H2 is designed to do
Fujifilm specifies a 40.2MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor. That resolution can preserve fine detail and give you more flexibility to crop than a lower-resolution image, a benefit RTINGS highlights for detail-oriented photography. It also produces larger files, and resolution alone cannot compensate for a poorly chosen lens, missed focus, or unsuitable exposure. See Fujifilm’s X-H2 specifications and RTINGS’ review.
That makes the X-H2 especially appealing for landscapes, studio work, portraits, and subjects where fine detail or cropping flexibility matters. Its high-resolution sensor is not the same thing as a speed-first design: moving subjects and fast camera movement expose the limits of its slower readout.

It has substantial video capabilities. Fujifilm lists internal 8K/30p recording, 6.2K and 4K HQ modes oversampled from 8K, and internal Apple ProRes formats. The camera can also output 12-bit RAW over HDMI to a compatible external recorder. These are format options, not a promise that every mode will suit every production: resolution, frame rate, codec, media, crop, and recording duration depend on the selected mode and conditions. Fujifilm’s product specifications and DPReview’s in-depth review provide details.
#1 Best Overall
- Live in detail with the world’s first 40-megapixel APS-C sensor X-H2 blends the compact and lightweight versatility of APS-C mirrorless cameras with an unmatched back-side illuminated X-Trans CMOS 5 HR imaging sensor. Add in an optimized pixel layout that promises exceptional detail, unrivaled color accuracy, and impressive video flexibility, these game-changing features are made possible only with X-Processor 5, which delivers lightning-fast performance to help X-H2 deliver 8K/30p video, enhanced autofocus capabilities, and black-out free image bursts at 15fps. Not to mention, it’s also more efficient than its predecessor, boosting battery performance by 10%.
- X-H2 uses its native 8K video resolution to give filmmakers several ways of unlocking the camera’s true potential. X-H2 offers a suite of video functions that make it perfect for every moviemaking occasion. Apple ProRes 10-bit 4:2:2 footage can be recorded internally at up to 8K/30p using a CFexpress Type B card, while 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW*1 or Blackmagic RAW*2 footage can be recorded to compatible external devices* via the full-size HDMI Type A port. Additionally, when recording video using the F-Log2 color profile, X-H2’s dynamic range extends to 13+ stops – a one-stop improvement over the previous sensor, enhancing post-production flexibility.
- Pixel Shift Multi-Shot X-H2 is the first X Series to feature Pixel Shift Multi-Shot, which delivers 160-megapixel images for the ultimate quality when detail really matters. A staple of GFX System cameras, Pixel Shift Multi-Shot records 20 frames, shifting the sensor by 0.5 pixels between each frame. Resulting images are automatically combined into one DNG RAW file, which can be output to a desired file format using suitable RAW processing software. This groundbreaking feature is invaluable for archival recording and other commercial applications where color fidelity and fine detail are paramount. Using Pixel Shift Multi-Shot ensures false colors and moiré effects are suppressed.
- Improved in-body image stabilization (IBIS) offers seven stops of compensation and features an enhanced algorithm that improves motion detection. This produces shake-free results in more scenarios than ever before, most notably when panning or following subjects on foot for video. For stills photographers, full-resolution images can be recorded at an incredible 15 frames-per-second when using the mechanical shutter, while those switching to the electronic shutter can work at 20fps in the 1.29x crop factor option. Further high-speed options are provided by the electronic shutter’s 1/180,000 sec top speed, while photographers seeking optimum quality will welcome the lower minimum ISO 125.
- With its broad range of wired and wireless options for transferring image and video data, the X-H2 camera body supports wireless image transfer through the Fujifilm Remote Camera App and natively delivers webcam resolutions of up to 4K/60p for a high-quality live streaming experience. With the optional VFT-XH Wireless File Transmitter Battery Grip functionality is expanded even further. The grip adds tethering connections and FTP file transfer through Wi-Fi, Ethernet and smartphone connections, plus the Remote Rec function. This enables up to four camera bodies, with VFT-XH battery grips attached, to be connected and controlled via a web browser on a computer, tablet or smartphone.
Rolling shutter and moving subjects
The X-H2’s readout is slower than the X-H2S’s stacked sensor. During fast pans or when recording fast-moving subjects, that can make rolling-shutter distortion visible. In RTINGS’ testing, the measured rolling-shutter effect was 8.3° in 8K; that is a result of its test, not a universal measure for every shooting situation. If you regularly film rapid motion, the X-H2S is the more suitable sibling for reducing this distortion.
Recording time and heat
Fujifilm gives an approximate 160-minute 8K/30p recording figure under specified conditions: 25°C, a cool start, auto power-off temperature set to High, H.265 4:2:0 at 200 Mbps, and a VG-XH grip with three batteries. It is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed continuous runtime. Card capacity, battery charge, ambient and camera temperature, and the selected settings can shorten recording or cause it to stop. Fujifilm lists the optional FAN-001 cooling fan as a way to extend recording capabilities in high temperatures, but RTINGS did not test it, so a specific runtime increase is not established.

Autofocus and stabilization
The X-H2 offers subject detection for people and several animal and vehicle categories. RTINGS found tracking capable but not fully consistent in busy scenes, and noted that firmware 3.00 affected its observed tracking performance. Treat that assessment as firmware-contextual rather than a guarantee for every version or subject. For predictable subjects and deliberate work, the system offers useful detection options; for demanding, cluttered action, autofocus should be weighed alongside the X-H2S’s speed advantage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRTINGS reports effective in-body image stabilization and cites Fujifilm’s advertised figure of 7 stops. That advertised specification is not a promise of the same result for every lens, focal length, subject, or shooting technique. The camera also has a deep, comfortable grip, but RTINGS describes the body as relatively bulky: the handling benefit comes with a portability cost.

Media, slots, and recording workflow
The X-H2 has two card slots with different formats: one UHS-II SD slot and one CFexpress Type B slot. Choose media that is compatible with the recording mode you intend to use, and check the required speed and capacity rather than assuming that any card will support every codec and resolution. Fujifilm’s specifications list the supported media and recording options.
For long or demanding video sessions, plan around card capacity, battery supply, and heat as well as the headline resolution. A format being available in the menu does not mean the same card, runtime, or conditions apply across all modes.

Should you choose the X-H2, X-H2S, or X-T5?
These models suit different priorities. RTINGS characterizes the X-H2 as better suited to studio, portrait, and landscape work, and the X-H2S to weddings, action, and video situations where speed matters. The X-T5 shares the X-H2’s high-resolution sensor but has a more portable body and dedicated exposure dials.
| Camera | What it prioritizes | Best reason to choose it | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fujifilm X-H2 | 40.2MP resolution and high-resolution hybrid video | Fine detail, cropping flexibility, and internal 8K/30p recording | Slower readout than the X-H2S; relatively bulky body |
| Fujifilm X-H2S | Speed and faster sensor readout | Fast action, rapid pans, and video work where speed and reduced rolling shutter matter | It is the speed-first sibling rather than the X-H2’s resolution-focused choice |
| Fujifilm X-T5 | High resolution in a more portable body | Similar sensor resolution with dedicated exposure dials and a smaller form | Less suited to buyers who want the X-H2’s larger grip and video-oriented workflow |
Choose the Fujifilm X-H2 body if
- You regularly photograph subjects where detailed files and cropping room are useful.
- You want high-resolution internal video options and can plan around mode-specific media and recording conditions.
- You prefer a deep grip and a hybrid workflow over the smaller, dial-led X-T5 body.
Look elsewhere if
- You often shoot fast action or make rapid pans: the X-H2S’s faster readout is a better match.
- Portability and dedicated exposure dials matter more than the X-H2’s larger grip and video focus: consider the X-T5.
The X-H2 is an X-mount camera, so lens choice is part of the system decision. Match focal length and lens characteristics to your subjects; no single X-mount lens is right for every kind of photography.
