The Fujifilm Instax Pal 2 is a tiny digital camera with a viewfinder, physical controls and an optional route to Instax prints—not an instant camera that prints from its body. Its announced US price was $169.95, and that is a lot to pay for lo-fi image quality. The case for it is the camera experience: playful framing and shooting, plus the choice to print selected pictures later with a separate compatible Instax device.
What the Instax Pal 2 is—and what it is not
Fujifilm announced the Pal 2 on September 14, 2026, as the second generation of its Pal camera line. It captures JPEG photos digitally; it does not expose or print instant film inside the camera. Fujifilm says you can print images separately through compatible instax Link smartphone printers or hybrid instant cameras, with film sold separately. Fujifilm’s announcement and product information describe that workflow.

That distinction matters when comparing it with a conventional instant camera. The Pal 2 lets you review and select digital images before spending on a print. But the print option adds equipment, film and an app-based workflow rather than delivering a physical photo directly from the camera.
Price and value
Fujifilm announced a US MSRP of $169.95 and a Canadian MSRP of $219.99. TechRadar reported launch prices of £149.99 in the UK and AU$249 in Australia. TechRadar’s reviewer considered the price high for a novelty camera, while recognizing the appeal of its tactile design. That judgment is easier to understand if you expect a practical everyday camera: the small sensor and lens do not match modern-phone image quality, according to the reviewer. The Pal 2 makes more sense if you specifically value its compact, playful shooting experience and want optional Instax prints, rather than buying it for image quality per dollar.
Image quality and camera specifications
Fujifilm specifies a 1/3.06-inch CMOS sensor and two JPEG still-image modes: 10MP at 3776 × 2832 pixels, or 1MP at 1280 × 960. The lens is 28mm-equivalent with an f/2.2 aperture; autofocus includes face recognition, and there is no optical zoom. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of image quality. Fujifilm’s specification page lists the details.
Independent impressions temper the appeal of the 10MP figure. TechRadar describes the output as lo-fi and says the camera does not match a modern phone. Tom’s Guide also reports noisy low-light images. Treat the Pal 2 as a camera for casual, characterful snapshots, not a dependable replacement for a phone camera, especially in dim conditions. Those are reviewers’ observations, not instrumented test results. TechRadar and Tom’s Guide provide their hands-on assessments.

Fujifilm lists automatic ISO 100–1600 sensitivity, automatic exposure, exposure compensation from −2 to +2 EV, and flash settings of automatic, off or on. The specified flash range is approximately 60 cm to 1.5 m, and the shooting distance is 8 cm to infinity. These manufacturer figures describe the camera’s operating range; they do not establish how well it handles a particular scene.
Controls, framing and app workflow
The Pal 2’s distinguishing design features are an optical viewfinder, a top LCD and tactile controls in a compact body. Tom’s Guide regards the finder and top display as useful upgrades over the original Pal. Fujifilm also specifies five filter themes, each with six effects, plus an animation mode that captures 10 frames. Remote shooting, image transfer and editing use the instax Pal app. Fujifilm’s product information describes the features; Tom’s Guide discusses the design in use.
The app is part of the product rather than an optional extra for the described smartphone workflow. Tom’s Guide says it offers 30 effects, with up to six loaded on the camera. If you want a camera that works without pairing or moving images through a phone app, that workflow may feel like friction. For someone who enjoys choosing effects and controlling a separate print step, it is part of the creative process.

Storage, battery and connectivity
Fujifilm estimates that internal memory holds approximately 100 images. For more capacity, the camera accepts microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards up to 2 TB. Its approximate card-capacity estimates are 400 10MP images or 3,400 1MP images per 1 GB. Actual capacity can vary with formatting and file sizes. The official specification lists these estimates.
The camera weighs approximately 87 g and measures 37 × 42 × 92.3 mm, excluding projecting parts. It has a 1.30-inch TFT color LCD with approximately 170,000 dots, USB Type-C and Bluetooth 5.3 Low Energy. Fujifilm estimates charging at approximately 2–3 hours, depending on temperature, and specifies an operating temperature of 5–35°C.
For transfers, Fujifilm estimates about 0.75 seconds per image over USB and about 15 seconds per image over Bluetooth; its US product page describes USB-C transfer as up to 0.7 seconds per image. These are manufacturer estimates with slightly different phrasing, and real transfer times may vary. Tom’s Guide reports a little over 90 images in its own battery test; that result is a single review test, not a guaranteed count for every user. Fujifilm’s US product page and Tom’s Guide’s review provide those figures.
Rank #4
- Smallest INSTAX camera, so that it can be with you anytime and anywhere
- Unique features add more fun when taking photos
- Wide angle lens to capture the whole moment
- A INSTAX camera for 3 instant image formats, direct printing with the INSTAX Link printers
- Even more functions with the INSTAX Pal smartphone app
Printing: which Instax devices work?
The Pal 2 does not print by itself. Fujifilm says images can be printed through compatible instax Link smartphone printers or hybrid instant cameras. The printer or hybrid camera and instant film are separate purchases. Fujifilm lists instax mini, SQUARE, WIDE and no-frame 4:3 image formats; match the printer and film format to the output you want before buying a bundle. Fujifilm’s Pal 2 product information covers compatibility, and its US product page describes the print options.
This gives the Pal 2 a different trade-off from an instant camera: you can keep images digital and print only favorites, but you must bring a compatible device and film into the setup. If you want prints immediately without another device, this is the wrong camera format.

Instax Pal 2 vs. Kodak Charmera
The comparison is less about choosing between identical cameras than deciding what kind of miniature-camera experience you want. The Pal 2 has specified autofocus, an optical finder, a top LCD, multiple shooting and filter options, removable memory support and a defined Instax printing path. TechRadar’s hands-on review characterizes its output as lo-fi and criticizes the price; it does not make the Pal 2 a high-quality substitute for a phone. TechRadar’s review provides that assessment.

For a Charmera buyer, the useful questions are what each camera costs locally, how much image quality matters, whether a viewfinder and physical controls improve the experience, how much app and transfer friction is acceptable, and whether selectable physical prints are worth the added printer-and-film expense. The available hands-on reviews support the Pal 2’s more developed feature set, but not a claim that it wins on image quality or value for everyone. Choose based on the experience you want, not the shared miniature-camera novelty.
Who should buy the Instax Pal 2?
- Consider it if you want a very small digital camera whose viewfinder, top display and effects make shooting feel more deliberate or playful than taking a phone snapshot.
- Consider it if you want to keep photos digital until you choose favorites to print on a compatible Instax device.
- Look elsewhere if your priorities are strong low-light performance, phone-beating image quality, video recording or weather protection. Tom’s Guide reports that the Pal 2 does not record video and is not weather-sealed.
- Look elsewhere if the announced price feels hard to justify for a novelty-oriented camera or if app-based transfer and editing are unwelcome.
Verdict
The Instax Pal 2 is best understood as a pocket digital camera built around the pleasure of shooting, not a miniature instant printer or a phone-camera upgrade. Its viewfinder, screen, effects, removable storage and optional Instax printing make it more flexible than a bare novelty camera, but reviewer impressions of lo-fi output and noisy low-light images limit its appeal as an everyday camera. At its announced $169.95 US MSRP, it is a niche buy for people who value its hands-on character and are comfortable paying separately for a compatible printer and film.
