A 2020 report described an experimental hydrogen fuel-cell aircraft built to stay aloft longer than a battery-only model. It had flown on battery power, but the report did not document a hydrogen-powered flight or a measured endurance time.

How long can this hydrogen fuel-cell drone fly?

The October 31, 2020, Hackaday report gave no completed hydrogen-powered flight duration for this aircraft. Its title describes an aim, not a demonstrated result. The report’s 60-minute comparison concerned other drones of similar design, not this project.

Hackaday reported that the aircraft had successfully flown on battery power. At the time of publication, its builders were still working through handling issues and trying to establish whether it could fly on such low power. The project report is a historical snapshot; it does not establish what happened after October 2020. Read Hackaday’s report.

What kind of aircraft was it?

This was a large experimental fixed-wing aircraft, not a small camera quadcopter. Hackaday reported a five-meter wingspan, a similar overall length, and a mass of six kilograms. Those are reported project figures, not independently verified specifications.

PEM Hydrogen Fuel Cell Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell New Energy High School Laboratory Teaching Accessories 50x50MM
  • Name: Hydrogen Fuel Cell
  • Type: PEM
  • Size: 50x50MM
  • Electrochemical device, no pollution, no harmful substances emission
  • Exquisite workmanship, compact size, portable and easy to use

The aircraft was designed around a conventional brushless motor for propulsion, with a hydrogen tank and fuel cell intended to supply power. Hackaday reported a maximum fuel-cell output of 200 W. The report does not identify the exact tank or fuel-cell models, nor does it establish the aircraft’s complete operating mass with hydrogen storage and conversion hardware.

How was the fuel cell meant to extend flight time?

A fuel cell converts hydrogen’s chemical energy into electricity to power the aircraft’s motor. In this design, the fuel cell was intended to provide sustained power, rather than relying only on energy stored in a battery. But the report does not provide a measured flight time, hydrogen consumption rate, or like-for-like endurance test against a battery aircraft. The potential endurance benefit therefore remained unproven for this build.

Why include a booster battery?

Hackaday reported that the team planned a booster battery for brief high-power demands such as takeoff. The design thus paired a fuel cell intended for sustained output with a battery intended to cover short power peaks. A reported 200 W maximum fuel-cell output does not by itself establish whether the aircraft could take off, climb, or sustain flight: the report does not provide a complete power profile or verified hydrogen-flight test.

What the report establishes—and what it doesn’t

  • Reported design: a five-meter-span fixed-wing aircraft with a similar overall length, six-kilogram mass, brushless motor, hydrogen tank, and fuel cell.
  • Reported fuel-cell rating: up to 200 W, according to Hackaday’s 2020 account.
  • Demonstrated status in the report: successful battery-powered flight.
  • Not demonstrated in the report: a hydrogen-powered flight or an endurance duration for this aircraft.

Other hydrogen-UAV examples and storage or refueling services appear in secondary coverage, but they do not verify this aircraft’s performance or prove that a particular system is currently available or compatible. The UAV Digest summary is secondary context, not a current product specification or a like-for-like test of this build.

5W Hydrogen Fuel Cell Stack, 8-Cell PEMFC Low Power Educational DIY Kit for STEM Science Projects, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell for Classroom & Lab
  • This is a 5W open-cathode Hydrogen Fuel Cell stack.
  • It operates by converting the chemical energy of hydrogen into electrical energy, with water and heat as the only byproducts.
  • Constructed with high-quality materials, this proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is designed for educational purposes, DIY projects, and as a teaching aid for renewable energy concepts.
  • Its compact size and low power rating make it an ideal introduction to fuel cell technology.

For anyone assessing a similar build, the useful comparison is not just advertised flight time. Check whether endurance was actually demonstrated, how takeoff peaks are supplied, what payload and aircraft type are involved, and whether the quoted mass includes the tank and power-conversion equipment. Hydrogen storage and refueling logistics also matter. The available reporting provides no comparable benchmark that would establish whether this design outperforms a battery aircraft.

  • The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
  • During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
