FUors generally last longer and reach higher accretion rates; EXors tend to erupt for shorter periods and can flare again on timescales astronomers may observe. Their spectra near peak brightness also often differ. These are characteristic patterns, not strict rules: some young-star eruptions share traits of both.
What distinguishes FUors from EXors?
A young star can brighten when material from its surrounding disk falls onto it at an unusually high rate. The FUor and EXor labels describe two familiar patterns of these accretion outbursts. Astronomers compare how long an event lasts, how often it recurs, how much the star brightens, and what its spectrum looks like—not just one measurement.
| Feature | FU Orionis-type (FUor) | EX Lupi-type (EXor) |
|---|---|---|
| Typical duration | Classical descriptions: more than 10 years; some events remain active for decades. | Usually months to around a year; historical descriptions use approximately one year. |
| Recurrence | Historically considered too infrequent to track easily on ordinary human timescales; longer-term recurrence is possible. | Repeated eruptions are a defining tendency, with intervals that can span years to decades. |
| Brightness change | Often a large optical rise, classically around five or more magnitudes. | Often smaller, but not necessarily: EX Lupi’s 2008 outburst exceeded five magnitudes. |
| Accretion rate | Generally higher. FUor literature describes a broad range; Hartmann and Kenyon (1996) discuss low-to-high FU Ori states of about 10−7 to 10−4 solar masses per year. | Generally lower. A historical comparison gives about 10−6 to 10−5 solar masses per year. |
| Optical spectrum near maximum | Often dominated by absorption features resembling those of F- or G-type supergiants, attributed to the hot, optically thick inner disk. | Often retains T Tauri-like emission lines associated with the young star and accretion shocks. |
The duration and rate figures in the historical side-by-side comparison are typical descriptions, not boundaries that classify every object. The European Southern Observatory’s 2008 table gives FUor duration as greater than 10 years and EXor duration as approximately one year; it lists typical outburst rates of 10−4 and 10−6–10−5 solar masses per year, respectively (ESO, The Messenger 131). Other reported FUor values span a wider range.
Why do their spectra look different?
At a FUor’s high accretion rate, the inner disk can become hot and optically thick enough to dominate the visible light. Its absorption spectrum can therefore resemble that of an F- or G-type supergiant, even though the object is a young star system. In an EXor outburst, the star and the regions where infalling material strikes it tend to contribute more visibly, so emission lines typical of T Tauri stars are more prominent.

These spectral patterns help astronomers distinguish the prototypes, but they are not an infallible diagnostic. Observed eruptions can show intermediate or conflicting traits, which is why spectra are considered alongside duration, recurrence, and brightness changes.
What EX Lupi’s 2008 eruption shows
EX Lupi, the prototype of the EXor class, had an unusually strong eruption in 2008. Kóspál and colleagues report that it brightened by more than five magnitudes for about seven months (Kóspál et al., 2010). That event illustrates why peak brightness alone cannot separate the classes: an EXor can exceed the classic five-magnitude rise associated with FUors, while remaining an EXor-type event in its broader behavior and accretion strength.

Why the categories are not hard boundaries
The distinction began with a small number of prototype stars. As astronomers have monitored more young eruptive objects, they have found sources that fall between the classic patterns or combine features that point in different directions. A long event, a large brightness increase, or a particular spectral line by itself does not settle the classification.
The labels describe observed behavior, not a proven one-to-one mapping between a light curve and its physical trigger. Models consider disk instabilities, infalling material, and interactions with a companion, among other possibilities. NASA’s 2024 account of Hubble observations of FU Ori discusses these as candidate explanations rather than a settled, universal cause (NASA Science, 2024). Recent observational and modeling work likewise treats outburst classes and mechanisms as subjects of continuing study (MNRAS, 2024).

How to interpret a young-star outburst
- Look at the timescale: years or decades of activity fit the classical FUor pattern better than a months-long event.
- Check for recurrence: repeated, relatively short eruptions are characteristic of EXors, though no fixed repeat schedule defines every object.
- Use the spectrum: disk-dominated absorption points toward a FUor-like event; T Tauri-like emission points toward an EXor-like one.
- Consider all the evidence together: brightness amplitude and estimated accretion rate add context, but neither is a standalone cutoff.
The practical distinction is therefore comparative: FUors usually represent longer, stronger disk-accretion episodes, while EXors usually represent shorter, more readily recurring ones. For a specific star, the classification remains a best fit to its combined observed behavior, not proof of a unique eruption mechanism.
