Choose Frostpunk if you want to manage a city under extreme cold—balancing heat, infrastructure, scarce resources, laws, and the needs of a population. Choose This War of Mine if you prefer a closer, more personal survival challenge: care for a small group of civilians in a besieged city, then send someone out to scavenge at night. Both are single-player games from 11 bit studios, but they put survival decisions at very different scales.

How the two games make survival different

The central difference is what you are responsible for. Frostpunk asks you to keep a society functioning; This War of Mine asks you to keep a handful of civilians alive. That changes the strategic rhythm, the choices you make, and the kind of pressure each game emphasizes.

Frostpunk: govern a city in the cold

Frostpunk describes itself as a “society survival game.” You rule the last city on Earth in a frozen world, where heat is essential to life and decisions have consequences. Your work is to build and maintain infrastructure, manage limited resources, set working routines, and provide for healthcare and food. Laws shape how society operates, while hope and discontent reflect the population’s response to your leadership. You can also explore beyond the city to find information, supplies, and people. Steam’s Frostpunk listing outlines these systems.

The hard decisions are political as well as practical: the official description frames a choice between authoritarian control, faith and compassion, or a balance. It also warns that decisions can have unexpected consequences. The game’s pressure comes from making choices for a population while trying to keep the city alive.

This War of Mine: protect a civilian shelter group

This War of Mine places you in charge of civilians caught in a besieged city—not an elite soldier. Food and medicine are scarce, and snipers and hostile scavengers pose constant danger. Its day-and-night cycle divides survival into two jobs: look after the shelter, craft or trade during the day, then send one civilian on a scavenging mission at night. The Steam listing for This War of Mine describes this civilian perspective and cycle.

Its choices are immediate and personal: whom to protect, what risks to take, and whether sacrificing some survivors could improve the group’s longer-term chances. The focus is not on governing a city but on managing the needs and dangers faced by a small group.

Verdict: choose by scale and perspective

Pick Frostpunk for the challenge of keeping a city and its society alive, where infrastructure and policy decisions affect many people. Pick This War of Mine for a civilian-focused survival story built around shelter care, nighttime scavenging, and the immediate welfare of a small group. Neither is simply the other with a different setting: one centers on leadership at city scale, the other on personal survival during war.
