MedalCraft is a first-person account of a proposed B2B ecommerce site for custom medals, plaques, commemorative coins, and event badges. Its central idea is a conversational configurator that gathers a buyer’s requirements, turns them into a factory-oriented specification, produces a visual mockup, and sends a price range to a person for review. The account describes a build approach, not independently verified sales or technical results.

What the MedalCraft project is intended to do

Kd jiang’s September 20, 2026 DEV Community post describes a service for organizations that need custom award and event products: schools, event organizers, sports federations, and corporate HR teams. Rather than sell only fixed catalog items, the site aims to help business buyers define a product and request a quote.

The author’s proposed differentiator is the bridge between a buyer’s informal request and a specification a production partner can use. That makes the project as much a quoting and operations workflow as a storefront. The post names no factory, contract terms, minimum order quantities, or independently verified customer outcomes.

How the AI configurator is supposed to work

The post illustrates the flow with a constructed request for 500 medals for a high-school math olympiad, in gold, silver, and bronze tiers, with a school logo on one side and the year on the other. It is an example from the author, not a documented order from a real customer.

  1. Collect requirements. The conversation captures quantity, event type, award tiers, design elements, and other buyer preferences.
  2. Propose a product. In the example, the agent suggests a 40 mm brass-plated medal with a woven ribbon.
  3. Create a visual concept. The system renders a logo mockup so the buyer can assess a possible design.
  4. Prepare a structured specification. The output is intended to resemble a bill of materials and map to the factory’s order sheet.
  5. Estimate and hand off. The system supplies a landed-price range and passes the request to a human for a quote, rather than treating an automated estimate as a final contract.

The operational principle is to make the agent return structured data that matches the production partner’s specification sheet. Fixed virtual-studio scenes are also recommended so generated product mockups look consistent. These are implementation suggestions in the post; it does not independently test the agent’s accuracy, image consistency, or effect on quote conversion.

Validate demand before automating the quote process

Kd jiang advises against building the configurator first. The post recommends handling 20 inquiries manually to learn which details buyers actually prioritize, with ribbon color and delivery date given as examples. That figure is the author’s suggested check, not a validated threshold or proven benchmark.

Manual quoting can reveal what a form or conversational agent must ask, which answers require production expertise, and what information is routinely missing. It also avoids automating a workflow before the business understands how its buyers make decisions. The post does not report the results of such a validation exercise.

What a factory-ready specification needs to accomplish

The project’s production model depends on a partner factory making products to order rather than the site holding inventory. The factory is unnamed, and the post supplies no evidence about its capabilities or terms. Within that model, the author calls the factory relationship “the moat, not the website” and recommends agreeing on a specification-sheet template early.

A useful template, as implied by the described workflow, should turn the buyer’s choices into unambiguous production instructions. At a minimum, the example makes clear that the handoff must preserve quantity, product type and dimensions, award tiers, finish, ribbon choice, artwork placement, and the year or other variable text. Delivery requirements matter to the quote as well. The actual factory template and its required fields are not published in the post, so these examples should not be mistaken for a confirmed production checklist.

Reported site and payment stack

The author reports using Next.js static export and Cloudflare Pages, with product variant pages generated at build time. The post says checkout is Stripe-compatible for Western customers and names Airwallex or LianLian for payouts to suppliers in China. These are the author’s reported choices, not an independently audited architecture or current endorsement of any provider.

The post also claims hosting has no monthly cost beyond a domain and gives a 0.3–1% payout fee range. Those are time-sensitive claims from the article, not independently verified prices. Actual fees, supported countries, payout routes, checkout availability, and hosting terms depend on current provider policies and geography; verify them directly before choosing a stack. The post provides no date-specific service documentation to establish those terms.

Search and discovery ideas—and what the account does not establish

The post recommends explicit product attributes, organization and product structured data, comparison content, and links from directories or communities. These are the author’s content and search suggestions. The article reports no measured traffic, rankings, citations in generative search, revenue, conversion rate, or customer results, so it cannot establish that the approach improved discovery or produced a commercially successful business.

What the build story demonstrates

As a build narrative, MedalCraft is most useful as a workflow concept: gather buyer intent conversationally, preserve it in structured production data, make a visual concept, and keep price approval with a human. Its business case remains an author’s account rather than independently verified performance evidence. The practical lesson is to validate the buying and production process manually before investing in automation, while treating the factory specification sheet—not just the storefront—as a core part of the system.
