Bitcoin rose about 6% in September 2026, then retreated to around $81,125 on October 8, giving back a substantial portion of that advance. The early-October pullback has put the crypto community’s “Uptober” expectation to an early test, but a few days of price action cannot establish whether a seasonal pattern will hold.
How much of September’s Bitcoin gain has been lost?
September was positive for Bitcoin, although the exact return depends on the provider and its price cutoff. Blockworks Intel estimated a gain of about 6% and a month-end price near $83,500; 21shares put the September close up 6.2%. Both figures describe a gain of roughly 6%, not a single universally agreed closing value. Blockworks Intel’s September report and 21shares’ September account give their respective estimates.
By October 8, Decrypt reported Bitcoin near $81,125, down 2.67% over the prior 24 hours and about 5.6% below its September 21 high of $87,354.33. The move therefore erased a substantial part of the prior month’s rise, but not all of it. Those are dated market figures, not a current live quote. Decrypt’s October 8 report gives the price and comparison.

The reporting points to several pressures arriving together rather than one proven cause. Rising oil prices and Treasury yields, expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening, and weaker appetite for risk weighed on market sentiment. Bitcoin also faced a sharp daily reversal in spot ETF flows and the forced closure of leveraged positions.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Spot ETF flows swung from monthly support to a sharp daily outflow
Decrypt reported that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $484.9 million in net outflows on October 7, which it described as the largest one-day outflow since June. That daily reading does not mean demand had been absent throughout September: Binance Research’s October 6 overview reported $3.49 billion of September spot Bitcoin ETF inflows and said net flows for 2026 had turned positive on September 23. The figures refer to different time windows, so they can both be true. Decrypt’s report covers the October 7 outflow; Binance Research’s October overview summarizes the month.
ETF flows can offer a view of investor demand, but a daily net-flow figure is not, by itself, proof of why Bitcoin’s price moved. It is one part of the market picture.

Leveraged longs were liquidated as prices fell
Decrypt also reported about $429 million in liquidations across 24 hours, with 87.5% attributed to long positions. Liquidations occur when leveraged positions are forcibly closed after market moves breach required thresholds. Long liquidations are consistent with falling prices amplifying losses and selling pressure, but the reported figure is a provider-reported snapshot, not an independently verified total across every exchange. Decrypt’s October 8 account provides the figures.
Why September’s rally did not guarantee an October rise
“Uptober” is crypto-community shorthand for the expectation that Bitcoin will perform strongly in October. It is a seasonal narrative, not a market rule or forecast. A positive September and prior ETF demand do not guarantee continued buying or protect the price from changes in interest-rate expectations, risk appetite, or leveraged positioning.

The October pullback also followed a September recovery that was uneven. Blockworks Intel estimated a September low near $75,600 on September 15 and said much of the month’s gain came in two days. 21shares reported a low around $75,000 and a high near $87,000. The small differences reflect provider and cutoff choices; both accounts show a volatile month rather than a steady climb. Blockworks Intel and 21shares report those ranges.
Binance Research’s September 28 snapshot had already noted a pullback below $84,000 after a rebound above $86,000, amid pressure from Treasury yields and rate expectations. It also reported a $999 million single-day spot Bitcoin ETF inflow on September 21. The contrast with October 7’s outflow shows how quickly the flow picture can change; neither daily reading alone defines the whole month. Binance Research’s September snapshot details that earlier market context.

What the market signals can—and cannot—tell you
Decrypt characterized the short-term chart as bearish while describing the daily trend reading as less bearish. Binance Research had earlier treated September’s “golden cross” as evidence of improved momentum, not a standalone catalyst. These technical readings describe different timeframes and are not reliable predictions on their own. The available reporting does not establish one definitive cause for the October decline or prove that a seasonal pattern will either continue or fail.
