Keep Tiled as the map’s editable source, export its maps as JSON, and write a TypeScript mapping layer that turns that data into PixiJS display objects. Tiled defines the map format; PixiJS loads assets and draws them. Neither PixiJS’s asset loader nor @pixi/tilemap is, by itself, a documented Tiled JSON importer.
How the workflow fits together
Tiled’s JSON export is an interchange format between the editor and your application. It describes map structure, layers, properties, and tileset references; your application decides how to represent those concepts at runtime. Tiled’s documentation says it can export maps as JSON, and its generic-format guide says Tiled can open JSON maps and tilesets. Tiled JSON map format and Tiled generic file formats.
A useful pipeline is: edit and retain the Tiled project and source assets, export JSON, load the JSON and textures in the TypeScript application, convert Tiled semantics into your own typed model, then create PixiJS display objects. If the app changes maps, decide separately whether it writes back compatible Tiled data or saves only game-specific state.
Keep the Tiled project as the source of truth
Export maps as JSON and keep the project, tilesets, and image files in the asset pipeline. JSON contains references and map data; it does not eliminate the need to make the referenced artwork available to the application. Retaining the editable project also preserves the editor-facing structure rather than making generated runtime objects your only copy.

Tiled’s generic-format documentation identifies JSON as its most common additional file format and says JSON maps and tilesets can be opened by Tiled. That makes JSON useful both for runtime ingestion and for workflows where exported data is inspected or regenerated. It does not guarantee that an application’s own modified representation can be converted back without loss.
Load map data and artwork in PixiJS
In PixiJS v8, the Assets API loads resources asynchronously. Its Assets.load() call returns a promise that resolves to the loaded resource, and the guide includes JSON among supported resource types. Use the paths configured for your project, load the map data and the required image or texture resources, and handle rejected loads rather than assuming every file is present. Asset loading supplies resources; it does not interpret Tiled’s layer rules, select a tileset for each global tile ID, or apply Tiled’s tile-flip flags. Keep those responsibilities in an explicit conversion layer so they can be tested independently from loading and display.

Translate Tiled’s structure into a typed model
Tiled maps can contain different layer kinds, including tile layers and object groups, as well as properties and tileset references. Parse the layer type deliberately and preserve the information your game needs. Flattening everything into a grid too early can discard object placement, custom properties, or other semantics that later systems depend on.

A practical internal representation can distinguish tile layers from object groups and carry relevant layer and object properties forward. The exact TypeScript types are project-specific: Tiled’s JSON describes the source structure, while your runtime model should express what rendering, collision, interaction, or gameplay code actually consumes.
Resolve global tile IDs before drawing
Tile-layer entries use global tile IDs (GIDs), not simply local indexes into whichever tileset appears first. Each tileset’s firstgid marks the global ID corresponding to that tileset’s first tile. Select the applicable tileset for a GID, remove its flip-related high-bit flags, then derive the tileset-local ID from the remaining GID and that tileset’s firstgid. Tiled documents the mapping and flag handling in its global tile IDs reference.

Do not subtract firstgid from a raw encoded value before accounting for flags and choosing the correct tileset. Preserve the decoded flip or rotation-related transform information too: stripping flags for lookup without carrying their meaning into rendering can select the right artwork but display it incorrectly.

Once the conversion layer has resolved a tile’s texture and transform, the application can create display objects with PixiJS primitives or use a tilemap helper. The @pixi/tilemap documentation describes a low-level rectangular renderer, not a built-in parser for Tiled JSON. Choose between these rendering paths based on your application’s representation and rendering requirements. In either case, the Tiled-to-runtime mapping remains your code’s job; a renderer does not automatically preserve Tiled layer types, object groups, properties, tileset references, or encoded transforms.
Choose runtime parsing or a custom export
Runtime JSON parsing keeps the exported Tiled structure available to the application, while a project-specific export can produce data shaped for the runtime. The right choice depends on what the application needs to retain and how your build and editing workflow are organized; the official format documentation does not establish a performance or maintenance winner.

Tiled supports JavaScript scripting and custom map or tileset export, which can provide an extension point for a project-specific format. Plan explicitly for edits and round-tripping
If users can edit maps in the application, define what “back” means before implementing save behavior. One option is to write a Tiled-compatible JSON structure; another is to save only game-specific state, leaving the Tiled source unchanged. The first requires preserving the fields and semantics your chosen Tiled workflow needs. The second avoids claiming that runtime state is a complete replacement for the authoring file.
Do not assume a lossless round-trip simply because both sides use JSON. Losslessness depends on retaining and correctly rewriting all relevant data, including layer and object information, properties, tileset references, and transforms. Tiled’s scripting and custom-export extension points can help shape an intentional export, but they do not automatically make a project’s runtime model reversible.
