A reliable AI-assisted video workflow starts with the finished deliverable, not a prompt: define what the video must do, plan its scenes, use generation selectively, then edit and review the actual cut before delivery. AI can help with material creation and some editing tasks, but it does not replace decisions about story, continuity, rights, accuracy, or platform requirements.
1. Define the brief and destination
Before writing prompts or generating clips, put the constraints that will shape the edit in one brief. These are planning choices, not a universal production standard:
- Audience and purpose: Who is the video for, and what should viewers understand, feel, or do?
- Runtime: Set a target duration so the script and shot plan have a practical boundary.
- Destination and aspect ratio: Identify where the video will appear and which frame shape that destination requires.
- Tone and visual direction: Note the intended style, pace, and any visual references that matter.
- Factual and brand constraints: Record claims that need verification, names or designs that must remain accurate, and material that must not appear.
Check the destination’s current technical requirements before export rather than assuming one preset fits every platform. A choice such as aspect ratio also affects what needs to fit inside each shot, so it belongs in planning, not just at the end.
2. Turn the idea into a script and scene plan
Write the narration or dialogue around the single thing the viewer should take away. Break it into scenes and shots, specifying what each shot contributes: information, atmosphere, transition, or evidence. A useful shot plan can be as simple as a table in your own project notes:

- Dell Services: 1 Year Onsite Service provides support when and where you need it. Dell will come to your home, office, or location of choice, if an issue covered by Limited Hardware Warranty cannot be resolved remotely.
- Scene purpose: What the viewer should learn or feel.
- Visual: What appears on screen and how the shot changes.
- Audio: Narration, dialogue, effects, or music needed.
- Source: Generated, original footage, licensed material, or a combination.
Storyboard or reference images are especially useful when the same character, setting, product, or visual treatment must persist across multiple shots. Runway documents an Agent that can help with scripts, narrative structure, storyboards, and reference sheets; those outputs can support planning but still need editorial judgment. See Runway’s Agent documentation.
3. Decide where AI belongs
Choose the method shot by shot instead of treating every scene as a generation problem. AI may suit a visual that would otherwise be difficult to source, while a real product demonstration, precise factual scene, or performance may be better served by original footage or appropriately licensed material.

Runway’s product documentation describes video generation from text, a still image, or an existing clip, as well as editing uploaded footage. Adobe’s Premiere documentation describes generating media within a timeline. These are examples of available workflows, not an independent ranking of quality or a guarantee that any feature is available to every account. Compare candidate tools against the project’s inputs, continuity needs, iteration controls, editable output, destination settings, and current availability. Runway’s generator page and Adobe’s Premiere generative-media help describe their respective flows.

Prompt emphasis depends on the input. Runway’s guide advises focusing image-to-video prompts on the desired motion; text-to-video prompts generally need both visual and motion elements. Its documentation also cautions that generated output can make mistakes and may need iteration. Feature sets and model descriptions change, so use the current help page rather than relying on a model name or ranking remembered from an earlier release: Runway’s generative-video guide.
5. Organize assets and make an editable cut
Keep source footage, generated clips, narration, music, references, and project files organized consistently. Clear filenames and a predictable folder structure make it easier to find the chosen takes and revisit a decision during revisions.

In the timeline, arrange shots to establish story and pacing, then refine transitions, audio, and continuity. AI assistance can help with appropriate tasks, but review the resulting sequence as an edit rather than accepting it as finished. Adobe’s Premiere AI Assistant FAQ, last updated June 18, 2026, describes beta capabilities for organizing footage, processing transcripts, and assembling a stringout or first cut. Adobe says the result is a fully editable sequence. Availability and capabilities can change; check the current Premiere AI Assistant FAQ before building a workflow around it.
6. Review the cut, not just the generated clips
Watch the assembled video from beginning to end. A clip that looks convincing on its own may still contradict the scene before it, make an unsupported claim seem factual, or disrupt the pace. Use a review pass that checks:

- Story clarity: Can a viewer follow the point without extra explanation?
- Continuity: Do actions, subjects, settings, and visual details make sense from shot to shot?
- Visual quality: Look for artifacts, unwanted changes, and distracting text or objects.
- Captions and on-screen text: Check spelling, timing, legibility, and whether they match the spoken content.
- Sound: Listen for clear dialogue, balanced levels, and abrupt edits or unwanted noise.

Generation is an input to editorial review, not a correctness check. If a scene is ambiguous or misleading, revise it, label it appropriately, or leave it out.

Track rights for every source
Keep records of where footage, images, audio, voices, and likenesses came from and what permissions apply to the intended use. Copyrightability of your contribution and permission to use someone else’s material are separate questions. In a May 2025 notice, the U.S. Copyright Office said that AI assistance or AI-generated material within a larger human-created work does not by itself bar copyrightability. That qualified U.S.-specific statement does not clear third-party inputs or grant rights to use a voice or likeness. For a particular commercial project, applicable legal advice may be necessary. U.S. Copyright Office, NewsNet Issue 1060.
Apply the destination’s synthetic-media rules
YouTube requires creators to disclose specified realistic AI-generated or meaningfully altered content, including a real person made to appear to say or do something they did not, altered footage of a real event or place, or a realistic scene that did not happen. Its examples distinguish such cases from production assistance such as generating ideas, outlines, scripts, or captions, which does not by itself require that disclosure. Follow the current instructions for the particular upload because platform policies and upload interfaces can change: YouTube’s AI disclosure guidance.
