Sjoerd Marijne’s first tenure as India’s women’s hockey chief coach began in 2017, after the team finished last at Rio 2016. By Tokyo 2020—held in 2021—India had reached its first Olympic semifinal and finished fourth. That was a breakthrough, not a medal, and it grew from years of work by players and staff rather than one coach alone. In 2026, Marijne returned; a Hindustan Times account says India went on to win Asian Games gold and secure direct qualification for Los Angeles 2028. The two periods show different stages of a team’s development, not a single turnaround.

What changed when Marijne took charge in 2017?

India finished 12th out of 12 teams at Rio 2016. In an interview published on 30 August 2021, Marijne recalled first seeing the team in a March 2017 match against Belarus. He said the players looked unfit and were making technical errors. That was his retrospective impression, not the finding of a formal fitness assessment. He described planning backward from the team he wanted to see at the Olympics, then working toward that standard over time. (The Indian Express interview)

The work was not only physical or technical. Marijne said he wanted players to feel able to raise questions and problems without fearing they would lose their place. He linked confidence and trust to setting ambitions and getting players to believe they could achieve them. His stated aim extended beyond results: he wanted to improve the standing of women in the sport and encourage players to set goals.

He also rejected a one-coach explanation for the progress. Marijne credited analytical coach Janneke Schopman and strength-and-conditioning coach Wayne Lombard for important contributions. Their work points to a broader account of the rebuild: coaching, analysis, physical preparation and a team culture that encouraged players to learn and speak up.

How India reached the Tokyo Olympic semifinals

India’s Tokyo campaign, held in 2021, began with three pool-stage defeats. The team then won its last two pool matches, advanced to the quarterfinals and beat Australia to reach an Olympic semifinal for the first time. Two narrow defeats followed: Argentina won the semifinal 2–1, and Great Britain won the bronze-medal match 4–3. India finished fourth, without an Olympic medal. (Hockey India’s Tokyo campaign report)

Stage Result
Pool: Netherlands Lost 5–1
Pool: Germany Lost 2–0
Pool: Great Britain Lost 4–1
Pool: Ireland Won 1–0
Pool: South Africa Won 4–3
Quarterfinal: Australia Won; advanced to India’s first Olympic semifinal
Semifinal: Argentina Lost 2–1
Bronze-medal match: Great Britain Lost 4–3; finished fourth

The turning point, in Marijne’s telling, was the pool match against Great Britain—not because India won it, but because the players’ response changed. He said he and Schopman met individually with players, after which the team found the key to the next matches itself. That account frames the comeback as a shift in belief and problem-solving, rather than a sudden run of easy results.

After the bronze-medal defeat, Marijne said: “I told the team that we didn’t win a medal, but we achieved something bigger than a medal and that’s inspiring an entire nation.” The distinction matters: fourth place was a historic Olympic achievement for the team, but it was not a podium finish. Schopman, reflecting on the players’ approach, praised their desire to learn, ask questions and try new things. (Both comments were published by Hockey India.)

Why the Tokyo result was a team achievement

India’s Olympic breakthrough was the visible outcome of a longer process. Marijne’s account emphasizes physical preparation, correcting technical errors and working backward from a target. His comments also describe a less visible change: players gaining enough confidence to speak openly and take responsibility for learning.

That is not proof that culture alone caused the semifinal run. Tournament results are clear; explanations of why a team improved are interpretations. Marijne credited Schopman and Lombard, and Schopman’s praise for the players’ curiosity suggests a coaching group and squad working together. The three opening losses and two close final defeats also show the distance between becoming a stronger team and winning an Olympic medal.

What Marijne’s return in 2026 changed

Hockey India announced on 2 January 2026 that Marijne was returning as chief coach. The federation said that during his 2017–2021 stint India rose into the world top 10 and finished fourth at Tokyo. The return-era support group named by Hockey India included analytical coach Matias Vila and Wayne Lombard as scientific advisor and head of athletic performance. (Hockey India’s announcement)

The setting was different from 2017. A Hindustan Times report updated on 3 October 2026 described the team as divided after missing Paris 2024 and losing FIH Pro League status. The newspaper attributed a reset to a team-first approach, player freedom, discipline and interaction between senior and junior groups. Those are the report’s characterization and the perspectives of people it quoted, rather than independently established causes.

Former India chief coach Neil Hawgood described Marijne’s approach this way: “Sjoerd gives them structure and discipline and the freedom to play within those boundaries.” Former India captain Pritam Rani Siwach likewise emphasized player freedom, saying Marijne did not make players fear they would be dropped for a poor performance. Marijne told the newspaper that he wanted high discipline and expectations alongside space for players to be themselves and enjoy the game. These perspectives help explain how the return-era culture was described, but they do not establish that culture by itself produced the results.

Comparing the two Marijne eras

Period Starting point and reported emphasis Reported outcome
2017–2021 After India’s last-place Rio 2016 finish, Marijne described addressing fitness and technical errors, building confidence and planning toward the Olympics. He credited Schopman and Lombard. India reached its first Olympic semifinal at Tokyo 2020, held in 2021, and finished fourth.
Return from January 2026 Hockey India named Matias Vila in analysis and Lombard in athletic performance. Hindustan Times described renewed team cohesion, discipline and player freedom. Hindustan Times reported qualifier and Nations Cup victories, a return to the FIH Pro League, fifth place at the World Cup and Asian Games gold with direct qualification for Los Angeles 2028.

These are not like-for-like measures: the first era culminated in an Olympic semifinal and fourth place, while the return-era results reported in 2026 span several competitions and include an Asian Games title. The common thread is not a claim that the same formula automatically produces success, but that Marijne’s accounts in both periods emphasize structure, player confidence and a wider staff effort.

What the 2026 results mean—and what is established

Hindustan Times reported that India won the World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad in March 2026 and the Nations Cup in June, regained FIH Pro League status, finished fifth at the World Cup and won Asian Games gold. The report says the gold secured direct qualification for Los Angeles 2028 and ended a 44-year wait for a second Asian Games title. It also characterized fifth place as India’s best World Cup finish since the inaugural 1974 edition.

The same report described 11 World Cup debutants and a tournament in which India lost once, 2–0 to the Netherlands, drew with China, England and Australia, beat South Africa 6–1 and Germany 3–1. These details, along with the wider 2026 arc, are attributed here to Hindustan Times’ account updated on 3 October 2026; they have not been independently corroborated here against tournament records. They should therefore be read as that report’s account, not as a separately verified match record.

The distinction between outcome and explanation remains important. The reported victories and qualification describe what India achieved; the newspaper’s account of a team-first reset and the coaches’ comments offer explanations and perspectives on how the group changed. The evidence supports presenting those ideas as attributed interpretations, not as a proven single cause.
