India’s FY2025–26 mainboard IPO market raised the most money in financial services, while capital goods companies accounted for the largest number of listings. That is a shift in fundraising weight—not evidence that engineering-related IPOs have vanished. The figures cover April 2025 through March 2026, not calendar-year 2026.

What changed in India’s IPO sector mix?

In its April 2026 bulletin, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) reported that financial-services companies raised ₹59,822 crore through 12 mainboard IPOs in FY2025–26. The category raised more than twice as much as any other single sector. Across all sectors, mainboard IPO proceeds totaled ₹1,77,029 crore.

Capital goods, however, led by listing count: 19 IPOs, compared with 12 in financial services. Services and healthcare had 11 each. The market therefore had one leader by proceeds and another by number of issuers. SEBI’s category is “Capital Goods”; it should not be treated as a complete synonym for “engineering.” SEBI’s April 2026 bulletin provides the full-year comparison.

Which sectors raised the most money?

SEBI’s FY2025–26 mainboard sector chart reports the following proceeds. The financial-services share of about 33.8% is a calculation from SEBI’s ₹59,822 crore figure and total proceeds of ₹1,77,029 crore; it is not a percentage SEBI directly published.

SEBI sector category Mainboard IPO proceeds, FY2025–26
Financial services ₹59,822 crore
Consumer services ₹25,891 crore
Other sectors ₹23,799 crore
Consumer durables ₹16,878 crore
Capital goods ₹14,865 crore
Automobile and auto components ₹10,274 crore
Services ₹9,464 crore
Healthcare ₹9,007 crore
Information technology ₹7,021 crore

SEBI attributed the financial-services result to large NBFC and asset-management-company offerings, naming Tata Capital, HDB Financial Services, ICICI Prudential AMC and Canara Robeco. This is SEBI’s explanation of the concentration, not a separate causal analysis.

How did the pattern develop during the fiscal year?

Interim snapshots show financial services holding the top proceeds share as the year progressed. Because these are cumulative snapshots from different months, they are not separate annual results.

Period covered Reported mainboard sector shares
FY2025–26 through January 2026 Financial services 36%; consumer services 16%; consumer durables 10%; capital goods 9%; automobiles 6%.
FY2025–26 through February 2026 Financial services 35%; consumer services 15%; consumer durables 10%; capital goods 8%; automobiles 5%; healthcare 5%; services 4%; IT 4%.

In the through-February snapshot, six of the ten largest issuances were from financial services, according to SEBI. The full-year figures show the proceeds concentration persisted, even though the percentage share was lower than in the January snapshot.

Does this mean finance is replacing engineering or manufacturing?

No. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: financial services dominated mainboard proceeds in FY2025–26, while capital goods had the most listings. A proceeds total can be heavily influenced by large offerings, so it does not indicate how many companies entered the market or establish that industrial issuers disappeared.

Sector labels also matter. SEBI reports “Capital Goods”; the National Stock Exchange (NSE) uses “Industrials” in its own classification, which is not identical. NSE’s separate interim snapshot through November 2025 put mainboard fundraising at 34% consumer discretionary, 33% financials and 10% industrials. These figures predate the full-year SEBI totals and use a different taxonomy, so they should not be read as a direct like-for-like comparison.

How do mainboard and SME IPOs differ?

The sector mix depends on the listing segment as well as the period and classification system. NSE’s FY2025–26 figures through November 2025 showed a different leader for SME IPO fundraising than for mainboard issues.

Segment, through November 2025 Leading categories in NSE classification
Mainboard Consumer discretionary 34%; financials 33%; industrials 10%.
SME Industrials 36%; consumer discretionary 24%; materials 11%.

These are NSE interim figures, not SEBI’s full-year mainboard series. They show why a claim about “India’s IPO sector mix” needs to specify the board: SME and mainboard fundraising did not have the same leading categories in this snapshot. NSE Market Pulse presents its own classification and segment breakdown.

What do IPO proceeds tell investors—and what do they not?

Proceeds measure the money raised through an offering, but not all of it necessarily goes to the issuing company. An IPO can include an offer for sale (OFS), in which existing shareholders sell shares, as well as a fresh issue that raises new capital for the company. The Government of India’s Economic Survey 2025–26 summary highlighted the prominence of OFS components through December 2025.

The same summary reported that, through December FY2025–26, IPO volume was 20% higher and proceeds 10% higher than in the corresponding FY2024–25 period. SME listings numbered 217 versus 190 in the comparable period; SME funds mobilized rose from ₹7,453 crore to ₹9,635 crore. These are market-wide comparisons through December, not full-year sector figures. The Press Information Bureau’s Economic Survey summary provides that context.

Are financial services leading IPOs in calendar 2026?

The complete sector comparison here covers FY2025–26, which ended March 31, 2026. Calendar 2026 continues through December, and it is not accurate to present the fiscal-year result as a calendar-year-to-date ranking. SEBI’s publication index lists a September 2026 bulletin dated September 23, but its linked annexure is not available here in readable form; a current FY2026–27 or calendar-2026 sector leader is therefore not established by the cited data. SEBI’s September 2026 bulletin page is the relevant official publication index.
