Used cooking oil from chip shops is collected as waste, cleaned and processed at an industrial facility. In the common biodiesel route, the oil reacts with an alcohol and a catalyst to produce biodiesel and glycerol. The oil itself is not ready-made fuel, and biodiesel is not the same product as renewable diesel.
What “chip fat” means
Here, “chip fat” means used cooking oil or fat from frying food that is no longer suitable for cooking. It can come from plant or animal sources. A business collects it as a waste feedstock; it is not simply poured into a vehicle as fuel. The UK Environment Agency’s T19 guidance explicitly covers collecting chip-frying oil from chip shops and treating it to make biodiesel.
How used cooking oil becomes biodiesel
The exact plant sequence depends on the feedstock and equipment, but the broad chain runs from collection to fuel finishing. A historical Greater London Authority account describes the collection and processing route, while the US Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center explains the fuel conversion process.
- Collection and aggregation: Restaurants and caterers store their used oil for collection. A collector gathers it and transports it to a processor, where separate loads can be consolidated.
- Screening and pretreatment: The processor removes food scraps, water and other impurities. The precise pretreatment depends on the oil’s condition and composition.
- Chemical conversion: In the common transesterification process, cleaned oils or fats react with a short-chain alcohol, commonly methanol, in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction produces biodiesel and glycerol.
- Separation and finishing: The biodiesel is separated from glycerol and refined. Plants may recover methanol, dry and filter the fuel, then store or blend it. The finished fuel must meet applicable quality requirements for its intended use.
This is an industrial conversion process, not a matter of filtering frying oil until it is suitable for an engine. The US Department of Energy warns that raw or refined plant oil and recycled grease that have not been processed into biodiesel are not biodiesel; raw oil is more viscous and can cause engine problems. Biodiesel and renewable diesel are different fuels
Biodiesel is made by transesterification. Renewable diesel is a distinct fuel made by a different conversion route, even though some feedstocks can be used to make either. Calling both “biofuel” does not make their production processes or fuel properties interchangeable. The US Department of Energy’s renewable diesel overview describes it separately from biodiesel.
So, when asking whether cars can run on chip fat, the important distinction is between untreated cooking oil and a finished, specification-compliant fuel. Used oil must be processed into an appropriate fuel; raw or merely filtered oil should not be treated as a drop-in substitute for diesel.

How much used cooking oil contributes in the UK
The Department for Transport’s final statistics for the UK Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) in 2024 show how important waste oils were in the reported supply:

The figures are from the Department for Transport’s Renewable fuel statistics 2024: final report, published in 2026. They describe fuels reported through that scheme. They should not be read as a universal lifecycle result for every biofuel, producer or consignment.

Why processing, quality and waste rules matter
Collection and treatment are regulated waste activities in the UK. Environment Agency T19 guidance sets conditions for eligible edible-oil waste, storage and treatment quantities, secondary containment and registration; an environmental permit is required when an activity exceeds the exemption. Requirements depend on the activity and jurisdiction, so businesses should check the current guidance rather than treat this summary as operating permission.
Fuel quality also determines whether processed material can be treated as a product rather than waste. The UK quality protocol for biodiesel produced from waste-derived oils and fats applies in England, Northern Ireland and Wales and was last updated in 2015. Under it, the producer must demonstrate appropriate inputs and processing, show that the fuel meets BS EN 14214:2012 and passes batch testing, and ensure it is used as vehicle or heating fuel for the biodiesel to leave waste controls. Check the protocol’s current status before relying on it for compliance.

Animal-origin material, or oil that has contacted animal proteins, can bring additional animal-by-product rules into play. Government guidance describes approval and processing requirements for specific cases; requirements do not automatically apply identically to every kitchen oil stream. The Department for Transport’s 2024 report says renewable fuels can have lower overall greenhouse-gas emissions when their full lifecycle is considered, because they can come from renewable feedstocks such as waste and residues. Its reported averages depend on the RTFO accounting framework, including whether indirect land-use change is counted. They do not establish the exact saving for any individual batch of used cooking oil.

For a fair comparison between biodiesel and renewable diesel, account for the feedstock and its waste or non-waste status, the different conversion routes, the lifecycle method and treatment of indirect land-use change, and whether the finished fuel meets quality and end-use requirements. A single emissions percentage cannot answer all of those questions.
