An agent can use Expo’s remotely hosted EAS Simulator to reproduce a mobile bug, exercise a changed app build, and provide a recording of its run for a pull request. The practical workflow is to preserve the report as a test case, make a focused fix, run that same case on the changed build, and describe exactly what the evidence shows. EAS Simulator is an early-access offering, and its remote-session CLI commands are marked experimental.

What EAS Simulator does—and what it does not do

Expo describes EAS Simulator as an iOS and Android simulator hosted on EAS infrastructure that an agent can drive. Its service page depicts a workflow in which an agent installs a build, exercises the app, and verifies its work; it also describes a simulator session recording appearing on a pull request. Expo’s agent-skills guidance identifies cloud and agent-driven simulator use as use cases, including letting an agent click through an app and capture screenshots.

This is different from running Xcode’s iOS Simulator or an Android Studio emulator on your own computer. A remote session is useful when the host machine lacks a local simulator or when an agent needs a cloud environment to control the app. It does not, by itself, mean that the service automatically creates a pull request, runs every test, or proves the app is free of other defects.

Expo labels EAS Simulator early access, and its CLI reference marks remote simulator commands experimental. Availability, supported setup, and command syntax can change; check the current EAS CLI documentation and your project’s access before relying on a particular command.

Turn the bug report into a reproducible test

Before asking an agent to edit code, reduce the report to a repeatable case. Preserve the reporter’s steps and conditions rather than paraphrasing away details that might explain why the bug occurs.

  • Steps: the shortest sequence that triggers the issue.
  • Expected result: what the app should do at the final step.
  • Actual result: what happened instead, including visible errors or a crash.
  • Context: platform, app/build version, relevant device profile, account and data state, and any conditions such as network availability.
  • Attachments: crash details, logs, screenshots, or a screen recording supplied with the report.

Ask the agent to run those steps on the existing app before changing code and to report whether it reproduced the failure. That baseline helps distinguish a fix for the reported behavior from a change that merely looks plausible in source code. Expo’s product page presents a bug or crash report entering an agent queue, but does not prescribe a particular report template.

Make a focused change, then keep the test case intact

Once the agent has reproduced the issue, have it inspect the code path implicated by the observed behavior and make a targeted change. Keep the original reproduction steps unchanged for the post-change check. If the steps need to change because the agent discovered an important missing condition, document that condition instead of silently replacing the original case.

This is a practical review discipline, not a patch-size rule imposed by Expo. The point is to make the connection between report, code change, and verification understandable to a reviewer.

Build and start the app using the appropriate path

There are two related but distinct tasks: creating an installable simulator build and opening a remote EAS Simulator session. Do not confuse a locally running simulator with a hosted remote session.

Documented iOS simulator build path

Expo’s iOS simulator build tutorial configures an EAS Build profile with ios.simulator: true, builds the iOS simulator artifact, installs it, and starts the development server. This is a documented way to prepare an iOS simulator build; it is not by itself a command for starting a remote EAS Simulator session. The iOS simulator build reference also documents installing a selected or latest iOS simulator build with eas build:run -p ios and its --latest option.

Remote EAS Simulator session

Remote session setup is documented separately in the EAS CLI reference. It uses a platform and can include device or build selection. The documented session types are agent-device, appium, argent, and web-preview-only. The first three include an automation interface; web-preview-only does not. Because this feature is experimental, use the current CLI help and the setup supported by your project rather than treating an older example as guaranteed copy-and-paste syntax.

Replay the report and capture meaningful evidence

After the fix is built and available in the simulator session, have the agent repeat the original steps on the changed app. The verification should identify the platform and build tested, the actions taken, what appeared on screen, and whether the original failure recurred. A recording or screenshot can make that run easier for a reviewer to inspect.

Expo says a simulator session recording can land on the pull request as evidence. Treat it as evidence of the recorded run under its particular conditions—not as proof that untested screens, platforms, device configurations, or data states are correct.

Make the pull request reviewable

A useful pull request connects the report to the change and to the observed result. Include:

  • A concise description of the reported problem and its impact.
  • The code change and the reason it addresses the reproduced behavior.
  • The exact reproduction steps and verification steps, noting any differences.
  • The platform and build used for the simulator run.
  • A link or embedded recording, screenshot, or other relevant run evidence when available.

The service page illustrates recording evidence on a pull request; it does not establish that every configuration automatically opens a PR or attaches a recording. The team still needs a reviewable change and an accurate description of what was tested.

When a remote run differs from local behavior

Remote builds can take longer to iterate on because the builder must set up its environment, download the project, and install dependencies. If local and cloud behavior differ, Expo’s build troubleshooting guide recommends checking environment variables, relevant tool versions, and whether the source files needed for the build are present in a clean clone.

  • Confirm the remote build used the intended source revision and included the file containing the fix.
  • Check that required environment variables and tool versions are available in the build environment, not only on the developer’s machine.
  • Verify that the installed artifact is the intended simulator build before attributing a result to the code change.
  • For a mismatch, record the conditions that differed; do not report a local result as though it came from the remote session.

Access and plan pricing are separate from simulator-session pricing

Expo’s EAS pricing page lists plan inclusions and subscription prices, but those plan figures are not simulator-session counts or a stated per-session EAS Simulator price. At the time the pricing page was reviewed, the Free plan included 15 Android and 15 iOS builds per month; Starter was listed at $19 per month and Production at $199 per month, both plus additional usage costs. These are volatile plan details, so check Expo’s current pricing page for current terms. The reviewed page does not state a per-session price for EAS Simulator.
