Friend is an AI companion worn on a necklace, designed for conversation and companionship rather than completing work tasks. Its current product materials say it listens while connected and replies out loud; using it requires an iPhone and the Friend app. The original 2024 announcement described a different interaction—phone-message replies—so the two descriptions should not be conflated.
What is the Friend AI device?
Friend is a wearable AI companion that hangs from a necklace. Friend’s official product page describes it as listening to activities shared around it while connected and replying out loud through the companion experience. The idea is a conversational presence, not a conventional productivity assistant built around getting work done.
When Friend was announced in August 2024, MobileSyrup described the device as an AI pen pal: users would talk with it and receive replies as messages on a phone. That is the interaction reported at announcement, not the current product-page description. MobileSyrup’s August 1, 2024 report also said the company planned roughly 30,000 devices for launch. These are historical announcement details, not confirmation of present production or availability.

Is Friend always listening?
Friend’s current product materials say the device listens while connected. That makes listening behavior a central consideration, not a minor feature: before using it, consider whether you are comfortable wearing a device that may pick up activity around you, including in shared spaces.

- You use a compatible iPhone: The stated requirement is an iPhone with the Friend app; the App Store listing specifies iOS 18.1 or later.
- You are comfortable with connected listening: Friend says it listens while connected. Review the current privacy policy and decide whether that behavior works for you and the people nearby.
