Freely is the better fit if you have reliable broadband and compatible hardware; Freesat is the better fit if you have a working satellite dish, limited broadband, or want a satellite recorder. Freely streams live and on-demand TV over the internet, while Freesat receives live channels through a satellite dish. Neither service has a platform subscription for its core service, but equipment, broadband, installation, optional apps and the TV Licence can still cost money.
Freely vs Freesat at a glance
| What matters | Freely | Freesat |
|---|---|---|
| How it delivers TV | Live and on-demand programmes stream over the internet on compatible hardware. The internet-delivered service does not require an aerial or satellite dish. Freely’s About page | Live TV arrives by satellite, so you need a suitable dish and satellite cabling. Freesat’s comparison FAQ |
| What you need | A Freely-compatible TV or streaming device and an internet connection. Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps for live streaming, catch-up and on-demand. Freely’s equipment FAQ | A compatible Freesat receiver or TV, plus a correctly installed dish with an unobstructed view and cabling. Freesat’s comparison FAQ |
| Can an aerial help? | On compatible Freely TVs, an aerial can add terrestrial channels to the same guide. Availability depends on transmitter coverage and location. Freely’s equipment FAQ and Freely’s ways-to-watch page | An aerial is not Freesat’s delivery route; Freesat uses satellite. |
| Channel information | Freely says 96% of the UK’s most-watched shows can currently be watched live over the internet. That is a statement about shows, not a total channel count. Freely’s equipment FAQ | Freesat’s FAQ says it offers over 100 TV and radio channels, including many in HD; its About page separately says over 170 channels, including more than 25 in HD. These claims have different stated scopes and are not a direct count comparison. Freesat’s channel FAQ and Freesat’s About page |
| Catch-up and apps | Combines live and on-demand content from major UK broadcasters. Features and device support can change. Freely’s About page | Offers on-demand apps including BBC iPlayer, ITVX and YouTube. Some optional services, such as Netflix or Prime Video, require paid subscriptions. Freesat’s FAQs |
| Recording | The Freely pages cited here describe streaming, restart/catch-up and on-demand viewing, but do not establish a Freely-native recording feature. Confirm what the exact TV or device supports. | Recordable Freesat receivers are available. Recording capacity depends on the box and satellite setup. Manhattan S4-R product page |
| Possible interruptions | Streaming depends on internet access and connection quality. Aerial channels, if used, depend on transmitter coverage and aerial condition. Freely’s equipment FAQ and Freely’s ways-to-watch page | Dish alignment, an unobstructed view, cabling and weather can affect reception. Freesat’s comparison FAQ |
Is Freely better than Freesat?
Neither is universally better: the right choice follows the connections and equipment your home can use. Freely avoids installing a dish and can work without an aerial, but relies on compatible hardware and broadband. Freesat avoids relying on broadband for live satellite channels, but requires a usable dish and receiver.

- Choose Freely if your broadband is dependable, your TV supports Freely (or you are prepared to add a compatible device), and you want internet-delivered TV without installing a dish.
- Choose Freesat if you already have compatible satellite cabling and a dish, broadband is weak or unavailable, or recording programmes is important.
Before committing, check the current channel guides for your location, the compatibility of your exact hardware, and any dish, cabling or device costs. Freely’s guide can reflect location-specific aerial channels; Freesat also directs viewers to its current lineup. Freely’s ways-to-watch page and Freesat’s FAQs

Yes. Freely’s internet-delivered service does not need an aerial or satellite dish, provided you have compatible Freely hardware and an internet connection. Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps for live streaming, catch-up and on-demand; that is its recommendation, not a guarantee that every connection at that speed will perform equally well. On compatible Freely TVs, connecting an aerial can add terrestrial channels to the guide. Whether those channels are available depends on local transmitter coverage and your aerial; the aerial is an option, not a requirement for Freely’s internet service. Freely’s ways-to-watch page
Do you need a satellite dish for Freesat?
Yes, for Freesat’s satellite television you need a suitable dish, satellite cabling and a compatible Freesat TV or receiver. Freesat says the dish should be correctly installed and unobstructed; weather can temporarily affect reception. If you are moving into a home with a dish, check its condition, alignment and cabling rather than assuming it is ready to use. Freesat’s comparison FAQ
Which service has more channels?
The published headline figures do not establish a like-for-like winner. Freely says 96% of the UK’s most-watched shows can currently be watched live over the internet; it does not call that a share of all channels. Freesat’s FAQ says over 100 TV and radio channels, including many in HD, while its About page gives a separate figure of over 170 channels, including more than 25 in HD. Those are differently scoped platform claims, not directly comparable TV-channel totals. Freely’s equipment FAQ, Freesat’s channel FAQ and Freesat’s About page
For a useful comparison, look up the current lineups and check the channels you actually watch, especially if you rely on local or aerial-delivered channels. Availability and app support may change. Freely’s ways-to-watch page and Freesat’s FAQs

Can Freesat record programmes?
Yes, recording-capable Freesat boxes are available, but recording capacity depends on the receiver and the dish’s LNB and cabling setup. For example, the Manhattan S4-R product page says it can make up to four simultaneous recordings with a compatible wideband LNB, or two with older setups. The product page listed an RRP of £259.99 when reviewed on 7 October 2026; prices and availability can change. Its dish and cabling are not included. Manhattan S4-R product page
Do not assume every Freesat receiver records, or that a recorder’s maximum simultaneous recording count applies to your existing installation. Check the exact model and whether your LNB and cabling support the stated configuration.
What does “free” mean for each service?
Neither core platform charges a subscription for its free-to-air service, but using it is not necessarily cost-free. Freely says there is no extra service charge after the TV Licence; broadband and optional third-party subscriptions may still cost money. Freesat has no satellite-service subscription, but a receiver, dish, cabling or installation may be needed, and some apps require paid subscriptions. Yes, if you watch or record live TV on any channel or service, or use BBC iPlayer, you need a TV Licence. The requirement is about what you watch, not whether the delivery platform charges a subscription. Check GOV.UK’s TV Licence guidance for the rules that apply to your circumstances.
